32 A Dual-Source Power for a Fully Populated Rack
The APC NetShelter Rack ATS AP4424A is the largest of the three 230 V Rack ATS models, rated 7,400 VA at 32 A. Two IEC 60309 32 A inputs connect it to two independent feeds, and eighteen outlets - sixteen C13 and two C19 - distribute that capacity across a densely populated rack of servers, storage and network equipment.
A 2U Chassis, Not 1U - Budget the Space
Unlike the 10 A and 16 A models, the AP4424A occupies 2U at 88.1 mm high, 431.8 mm wide and 236.2 mm deep, and the correct 2U bracket kit ships with it. It is easy to assume this model matches its 1U siblings; Schneider's own product name and data sheet both confirm 2U, so plan two rack units for it.
Fast Transfer, Selectable Sensitivity
Transfer between sources completes in 10 ms maximum on the high sensitivity setting and 12 ms on low, inside the ride-through of a normal server power supply. Source preference, sensitivity and up to three voltage transfer ranges are selectable from the front panel or the Web UI, and the break-before-make relay design allows the two sources to be up to 180 degrees out of phase.
Network Management Card 3 as Standard
The AP4424A is a fifth-generation NetShelter Rack ATS with Schneider's Network Management Card 3 integrated and field-replaceable: Gigabit Ethernet, a secure Web UI over HTTP/HTTPS, SSH, SNMP v1 and v3, Modbus TCP and EcoStruxure IT integration, a colour LCD showing load in amps, the state of both sources, the preferred source and alarms, a Universal I/O port for an AP9335T or AP9335TH sensor, and Link A/B ports for sharing one IP address across up to 32 units. Compatibility & Load Planning
What you can plug into it. Sixteen IEC C13 outlets take standard C14 equipment cords. Two IEC C19 outlets take C20 cords for blade chassis, storage shelves and large core switches. Eighteen outlets and 7,400 VA is enough for a fully populated rack, which is the point of this model over its 10 A and 16 A siblings, the AP4421A and AP4423A.
Load planning and breakers. Maximum capacity is 7,400 VA at 32 A. Schneider lists an inbuilt circuit breaker for this model but does not publish its rating or how the outlets are split between banks, so we do not print those figures - ask us and we will confirm against the current data sheet before you plan the load. Remember that in a failover a single source carries everything, so both upstream feeds must be rated for the full 32 A.
Rack fit - this one is 2U. 88.1 mm high, 431.8 mm wide, 236.2 mm deep, and the 2U rack-mount bracket kit ships with it. The AP4421A and AP4423A are 1U; the AP4424A is not. If you are replacing a 1U transfer switch, check you have the extra rack unit free before ordering.
Feeding it. Both inputs are IEC 60309 32 A 2P+E, so you need two 32 A IEC 60309 (commando) outlets on two genuinely independent circuits. This is a fixed electrical installation, not something you plug into a wall socket; budget for an electrician if those outlets are not already in the rack. Both feeds must be independent for the redundancy to be meaningful.
Management. The AP4424A carries Schneider's Network Management Card 3 as standard - there is no SmartSlot to populate and no card to buy. You get a Gigabit Ethernet port, a secure Web UI over HTTP/HTTPS, a CLI over SSH, SNMP v1 and v3 with traps, Modbus TCP for a building management system, Syslog and e-mail alerts, and EcoStruxure IT integration. The NMC/display module can be swapped in the field, so a damaged card is a spare-part exchange rather than a whole-unit return. The micro-USB console cable is not in the box.
Environmental monitoring. The Universal I/O port accepts the optional AP9335T temperature sensor or the AP9335TH temperature and humidity sensor, so a comms cabinet with no other monitoring can report rack temperature through the same IP address as its power switching. Thresholds and alarms are set in the same Web UI.
Many units, one IP. With Link A and Link B on the front panel, up to 32 AP44XXA-series Rack ATS units can be chained so that one network connection serves them all. One unit is the host; the rest appear under it in the Web UI and in SNMP.

Locking Output Cords (Sold Separately)
These are the cords that run from this unit's C13 outlets to your equipment's C14 inlets. The locking design stops a cord being nudged out of its outlet while you work in the rack - a common and entirely avoidable cause of an unplanned reboot. Frequently Asked Questions — APC AP4424A
Is the AP4424A 1U or 2U?
2U. Schneider's product name, technical brochure and data sheet all give 2U and a height of 88.1 mm, and the 2U bracket kit ships in the box. Third-party listings sometimes show 1U for this part, so it is worth checking. Its smaller siblings, the AP4421A and AP4423A, are the 1U models.
What input supply does it need?
Two independent 32 A IEC 60309 2P+E (commando) circuits. The outlets themselves are a fixed electrical installation - this is not a plug-into-the-wall product. Both circuits must be able to carry the full 32 A on their own, because in a failover one of them will.
Does the AP4424A have surge protection?
No. Schneider states this plainly in the AP44XXA user guide (990-91718): the Rack ATS does not include power surge protection, and it recommends connecting each Rack ATS source to a double-conversion on-line UPS. Claims of surge suppression against this part are incorrect. If surge and dip protection is what you actually need, an on-line UPS such as the Smart-UPS SRT range in front of the ATS is the right answer, and it also gives the ATS a genuinely independent second source.
Is network management built in, or do I need to buy a card?
Built in. The AP4424A ships with Network Management Card 3 integrated - Gigabit Ethernet, Web UI over HTTP/HTTPS, SSH, SNMP v1 and v3, Modbus TCP and EcoStruxure IT support are all standard. You do not buy a card for it. If the module is ever damaged it can be replaced in the field rather than sending the whole switch away.
Can it monitor rack temperature and humidity?
Yes, with an optional sensor. Plug an AP9335T (temperature) or AP9335TH (temperature and humidity) into the Universal I/O port and the readings, thresholds and alarms appear in the same Web UI and SNMP tree as the power data. No NetBotz appliance is needed for a single-cabinet site.
What does "manage up to 32 ATS from one IP address" mean in practice?
Each AP44XXA-series unit has Link A and Link B ports. Chain up to 32 units through those ports, connect only the host unit to your network, and every unit in the group is visible and configurable through that one IP address. It saves a switch port and an address per cabinet and keeps the whole estate under one login.
How fast does it transfer, and will my servers notice?
A maximum of 10 ms on the high sensitivity setting, 12 ms on low sensitivity, with Schneider quoting a typical total transfer of 8 to 12 ms. That is inside the hold-up time of a normal server or network power supply, so equipment generally rides through without restarting. High sensitivity reacts sooner to a marginal source; low sensitivity tolerates more deviation before acting, which is useful when a generator feed would otherwise make the unit transfer more often than you want. The two sources may be up to 180 degrees out of phase.
How does the AP4424A differ from the AP4424 it replaces?
The electrical side is unchanged: same 32 A, 230 V, 7,400 VA rating, same inlet type and the same outlet configuration, so the AP4424A drops into an existing AP4424 installation without rewiring. What Schneider changed is the management module. The AP4424A moves from Network Management Card 2 to Network Management Card 3, and that card and its display are now field-replaceable. It adds a Universal I/O port for an AP9335T or AP9335TH sensor, Link A and Link B ports for Network Port Sharing of up to 32 units on one IP address, Gigabit Ethernet in place of 10/100, a colour LCD, a micro-USB console port instead of the old RJ12 serial lead, a USB-A port for firmware upgrade and the AP9834 Wi-Fi device, Modbus TCP, updated security (secured interfaces and a stricter password policy) and EcoStruxure IT integration. The standard warranty stays at 2 years.
