APC Smart-UPS X 1000VA Rack/Tower LCD 230V
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
APC Smart-UPS X 1000VA Rack/Tower LCD 230V (SMX1000I) - Local Warranty
APC SMX1000I 1000 VA Line-Interactive UPS for Singapore Server Rooms and Comms Cabinets
The APC Smart-UPS X SMX1000I delivers 1000 VA / 800 W of protected, conditioned power in a 2U rack/tower convertible chassis. It is a line-interactive design with a true sine wave output, which is what you want in front of servers, storage, switches and anything else running an active-PFC power supply. Singapore's 230 V / 50 Hz mains is stable by regional standards but not immune: lightning season brings switching transients and short sags, and a comms cabinet on a shared riser sees voltage move whenever heavy plant starts elsewhere in the building. The SMX1000I rides through those events without touching the battery, and covers a genuine outage from its internal pack.
SMX1000I Outlets, Surge Protection and Voltage Regulation
Connection is via 8× C13 plus 2 IEC jumper cords, and every powered outlet is battery-backed — there is no surge-only bank to catch you out when you cable the rack. Surge energy rating is 600 Joules, with full-time multi-pole noise filtering on the mains path. Automatic Voltage Regulation corrects sustained over- and under-voltage by transformer tap rather than by switching to battery, so brownouts do not eat battery cycles and the pack is still full when you actually need it. The unit accepts 160–286 V at the input, which is a wide enough window to absorb the dips a Singapore building distribution board will hand it.
SMX1000I SmartSlot Expansion and Remote Management
The SMX1000I ships with one free SmartSlot. Fit an APC Network Management Card and the UPS joins your monitoring estate: Web and SNMP access, remote shutdown, scheduled self-tests, and alerts by email or SNMP trap when mains fails or the battery ages out. That matters most for the sites you do not visit — a branch comms cabinet or a tenant rack in a shared facility. Locally attached servers shut down gracefully over the supplied USB or RS-232 signalling cable without any card at all.
Rack Fit, Serviceability and Local Supply from SourceIT
The SMX1000I is 2U high and 49.0 cm deep, converting to a floor-standing tower with the supplied feet where no rack is available. At 2U and 49.0 cm deep it drops into a standard server cabinet without eating rack space — still worth checking your rear clearance before you order. The battery is a single user-replaceable APCRBC116 cartridge, so a battery refresh in three to five years is a parts order and a short maintenance window, not a service call-out. Singapore's heat and humidity are hard on VRLA batteries, so plan that refresh into the asset's life from day one. SourceIT supplies the SMX1000I with local Singapore warranty support and a GST invoice, and we will size the unit against your real load list before you commit.

Compatibility & Runtime
What you can plug into it
The SMX1000I provides 8× C13 plus 2 IEC jumper cords. Every powered outlet on this unit is battery-backed — there are no surge-only sockets, so anything you connect gets both conditioning and ride-through. The IEC jumper cords are short C13-to-C14 leads for cabling neighbouring rack equipment tidily; they are not additional outlets. Servers, storage shelves and switches with C14 inlets connect directly with a C13-to-C14 cord.
Rack fit and depth
This is a 2U rack/tower convertible unit, 49.0 cm deep. Measure your cabinet's internal depth before ordering. Rack hardware included in the box: rack mounting brackets and removable support feet. These are fixing brackets, not sliding four-post rails — the unit is supported at the front and needs shelf or rear support in a deep cabinet. The unit converts to a floor-standing tower using the supplied feet where a rack is not available.
Input supply and Singapore mains
Input is via IEC 320 C14 inlet, and the unit accepts 160–286 V at 50/60 Hz auto-sensing — comfortably wide for Singapore's nominal 230 V / 50 Hz supply and for the sags that come with afternoon storm switching on the PUB network. Confirm the supplied cord type when you order — Schneider ships this reference with several regional cord options and we will supply the correct one for Singapore.
Batteries and runtime
The internal battery is a maintenance-free sealed lead-acid (VRLA) pack, replaced as a single cartridge: APCRBC116, which we stock — see APC Replacement Battery Cartridge #116. Typical recharge time is three hours. In Singapore's year-round heat and humidity, ambient temperature is the single biggest factor in how long a VRLA pack lasts, so keep the unit in the conditioned part of the room and plan a cartridge replacement roughly every three to five years.
Runtime extends with SMX48RMBP2U external battery packs, up to 5 on this model — see APC Smart-UPS X External Battery Pack 48V, 2U rack/tower.
Schneider Electric does not publish runtime-at-load figures for this reference, so we do not quote any. Runtime depends entirely on the connected load, battery age and ambient temperature. Tell us your actual load in watts and we will size it against the official runtime curves.
Network management and monitoring
This build ships with one free SmartSlot and no card fitted. Add an APC Network Management Card when you want Web, SNMP and CLI monitoring, scheduled self-tests and email or SNMP-trap alerting: AP9640 Network Management Card 3, or AP9641 Network Management Card 3 with Environmental Monitoring if you also want to watch rack temperature and humidity via an AP9335TH Temperature & Humidity Sensor. If you would rather have the card pre-installed and configured, the matching NC build of this model is listed in the ordering table below.
Locally attached shutdown uses the supplied USB or RS-232 signalling cable. Schneider confirms graceful shutdown for this reference via PowerChute Serial Shutdown. This is a Smart-UPS X unit and does not include APC SmartConnect cloud monitoring; SmartConnect is a feature of the newer Smart-UPS "C" references.

Frequently Asked Questions — APC SMX1000I
What is the difference between the 1000 VA and 800 W ratings, and how do I size the SMX1000I for my load?
VA is the apparent power the UPS can deliver and W is the real power. Modern IT equipment is close to unity power factor, so in practice the 800 W figure is the one that limits you. Add up the nameplate or measured draw of everything you intend to connect, then leave headroom — we usually recommend loading a UPS to no more than 70–80% of its watt rating so it has capacity for growth and so the battery is not working at its worst-case discharge rate. For the SMX1000I that means planning for roughly 600 W of steady load. Send us your equipment list and we will size it properly.
How long will the SMX1000I run on battery?
Schneider Electric does not publish runtime-at-load tables for this reference, and we will not invent figures for it. Runtime depends on how heavily the unit is loaded, how old the battery is and how warm the room is — a UPS at 30% load runs many times longer than the same unit at 90%. You can extend runtime substantially with SMX48RMBP2U external battery packs, up to 5 on this model. Tell us your actual load in watts and the ride-through you need, and we will size it against Schneider's official runtime curves before you commit.
What is the difference between the SMX1000I and the "NC" version?
The NC references are the same UPS hardware with an APC network management card factory-fitted, plus a temperature probe, so they arrive ready to monitor over the LAN. The SMX1000I leaves its single SmartSlot free, which costs less up front and lets you choose the card — but you supply and fit it. If you already standardise on a card generation across your estate, buying the non-NC unit and fitting your own card is usually the better call.
Does the SMX1000I produce a true sine wave, and will it work with an active-PFC power supply?
Yes — Schneider's data sheet for this exact model states sine wave output, not a step-approximated or simulated waveform. That matters: active power-factor-corrected server and workstation PSUs, which is nearly everything sold in the last decade, can misbehave or shut down on a stepped waveform when the UPS transfers to battery. A genuine sine wave output like this one is the safe choice for servers, NAS units, network gear and anything with an active-PFC supply. Note this is a line-interactive UPS, not a double-conversion online unit — it transfers to inverter on a mains failure rather than running the load through the inverter continuously. For loads that cannot tolerate any transfer at all, look at the APC Smart-UPS On-Line SRT range we also carry.
Which replacement battery can I fit to the SMX1000I, and can I change it myself?
The correct cartridge is APCRBC116 — see APC Replacement Battery Cartridge #116. It is a user-replaceable cartridge, so you do not need a service visit to change it. Schneider's documentation for this reference does not state that the cartridge can be exchanged with the load still running, so plan a short maintenance window rather than assuming otherwise. Do not substitute a cartridge from a neighbouring model: within the Smart-UPS X range the cartridge differs by chassis, not by VA rating, and fitting the wrong one is a common and expensive ordering mistake.
How much rack space does the SMX1000I need, and are rails included?
It occupies 2U and is 49.0 cm deep. Rack hardware supplied in the box: rack mounting brackets and removable support feet. At 49.0 cm it is a moderate-depth chassis that suits most standard server cabinets, though it is deeper than a typical shallow wall-mount comms box — measure before ordering. It also converts to a tower using the supplied feet. Remember to budget for the weight as well as the U height: this unit is 22.86 kg, so mount it at the bottom of the rack.
How does the SMX1000I compare with the SMX1500RMI2U in your catalogue?
The SMX1500RMI2U (APC Smart-UPS X 1500VA Rack/Tower LCD 230V) is rated 1500 VA / 1200 W against this unit's 1000 VA / 800 W, in a 2U chassis with 8× C13 plus 2 IEC jumper cords. If your load list is close to the limit of one, step up to the other rather than run a UPS near its ceiling.
Is the SMX1000I covered by a Singapore warranty?
Yes. Every APC SMX1000I sold by SourceIT comes with local Singapore warranty and a GST invoice; APC backs the SMX1000I with a manufacturer warranty of three years repair or replace on the unit (excluding the battery) and two years on the battery. Schneider Electric publishes this term globally for the Smart-UPS range with no separate European or rest-of-world figure. Register the unit with Schneider after purchase, and keep your invoice — the warranty period runs from the original date of purchase.
