Secure Remote UPS Monitoring and Management Over Your Network

The APC UPS Network Management Card 3 (AP9640) installs in a Smart-UPS SmartSlot bay and gives the UPS its own IP address, web interface, command line and SNMP agent. From there you can see load, battery status, runtime and input conditions, receive real-time event notification, and pull detailed data and event logs - without walking to the rack.

NMC3 is the current generation of APC's management card and it is a security-led design: HTTPS with TLS, SSH, SNMPv3, RADIUS authentication and 802.1X port-based network access control are all supported, alongside the older HTTP, Telnet and SNMPv1 methods where a legacy monitoring system still needs them.

Protocol Coverage for NMS, BMS and Building Automation

The card speaks the protocols a mixed Singapore estate actually runs on. For network monitoring: SNMP v1, v2c and v3, Syslog and SMTP e-mail alerting. For building and industrial systems: Modbus TCP/IP and BACnet/IP, so a UPS in a comms room can report into the same head-end as the chillers and the access control. For file transfer and firmware work: FTP and SCP. Addressing covers DHCP, BOOTP and NTP time sync.

The card is also the network half of PowerChute Network Shutdown, which lets a UPS gracefully shut down physical and virtual servers when runtime runs short - the piece most SME server rooms miss until the first long outage.

Gigabit Ethernet and a One-Year Secure NMC System Subscription

Connection is a single 10/100/1000 Base-T RJ45 port, with a micro-USB console port for local configuration. Every AP9640 includes a one-year Secure NMC System subscription, Schneider's programme for keeping card firmware current against new vulnerabilities - a point worth raising with any customer who has to answer a security audit.

The card is EcoStruxure IT compatible, so it can report into Schneider's monitoring platform alongside the rest of the estate.

Built for Server Rooms and Comms Cabinets on Singapore's 230V Mains

A UPS that nobody can see is a UPS nobody maintains. Fitting an AP9640 turns a standalone Smart-UPS into a monitored asset: you get e-mail alerts and SNMP traps on UPS and power events, and detailed data and event logs that tell you how often the PUB supply actually dipped during the last storm season.

The card runs at 0 to 45 °C and 0 to 95% humidity. Supplied and invoiced locally in Singapore with GST.

Compatibility & Fit

Which UPS families accept the AP9640. The card fits an APC SmartSlot bay. Schneider's UPS network management card compatibility chart lists single-phase support for SUA, SUM, SURT, SURTA, SURTD and SUVT legacy units, MGE Galaxy 3500, and the current SMT, SMX, SRT, SRC, SMTL, SRTL and SRYL ranges, plus Symmetra LX and Symmetra RM at firmware v1.5.1.1 or later. Three-phase support covers Symmetra PX1 20/40/48 kW, Symmetra PX2 96/100/160 kW, Galaxy VM, Galaxy VX, Galaxy PX, Galaxy 3L Pro, Easy UPS 3-Phase Modular and Easy UPS 3M Advanced. Legacy SUA units must be manufactured after 2008 and running firmware v1.4.2 or later.

In the SourceIT catalogue that covers the Smart-UPS SmartConnect range (SMT and SMC), the Smart-UPS X range - for example the SMX1500RMI2U - and the Smart-UPS On-Line SRT range, such as the SRT3000RMXLI. Note that the "NC" variants of the Smart-UPS X ship with a management card already fitted and no free SmartSlot - check before ordering a second card.

How many SmartSlots do I have? Most single-phase Smart-UPS models have exactly one. That slot can hold this card, the AP9641, or the AP9613 dry contact card - not two of them. Choose on function: AP9640 for network management alone, AP9641 if you also want temperature and humidity sensing from the same slot.

Sensors. The AP9640 has no universal I/O ports, so it does not take the AP9335T or AP9335TH sensors. If environmental monitoring is part of the requirement, specify the AP9641 instead, or add a NetBotz Rack Monitor 250 (NBRK0250A) for rack-level sensing and door access control.

Not for Rack PDUs. APC Rack PDUs with network management - the AP79xx, AP88xx and APDU ranges - have their own network port built in and do not use a Network Management Card. The AP9640 is for UPS SmartSlot bays only.

What you can do once it is on the network. Browser and command-line management, SNMP polling and traps into your NMS, e-mail alerts, Syslog, scheduled self-tests, event and data logs, firmware updates over the network, Modbus TCP/IP or BACnet/IP into a BMS, and graceful server shutdown through PowerChute Network Shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions — APC AP9640

What is the difference between the AP9640 and the AP9641?

Sensor ports. The AP9640 has none. The AP9641 adds two universal I/O ports that accept the AP9335T temperature sensor or the AP9335TH temperature and humidity sensor, plus three USB ports rather than one micro-USB console, Modbus RTU over serial, and support for the AP9834 Wi-Fi dongle. The AP9641 also ships with an AP9335T temperature sensor in the box. Network management itself is the same on both cards. If you have one SmartSlot and any interest in rack temperature, the AP9641 is usually the better buy.

Will it fit my UPS?

It needs a free SmartSlot. Schneider's compatibility chart covers SMT, SMX, SRT, SRC, SMTL, SRTL and SRYL current ranges plus SUA, SUM, SURT, SURTA, SURTD, SUVT and MGE Galaxy 3500 legacy units, Symmetra LX and RM, and the three-phase Symmetra PX and Galaxy families. Legacy SUA units need post-2008 manufacture and firmware v1.4.2 or later. Send us your UPS part number and we will confirm both compatibility and whether the slot is already occupied.

Can I use it with an APC Rack PDU?

No, and you do not need to. APC's managed Rack PDUs - the AP79xx, AP88xx and APDU Advanced ranges - have network management built into the unit with their own Ethernet port, web interface and SNMP agent. Network Management Cards are for UPS SmartSlot bays.

Which protocols does it support?

Does it let servers shut down automatically?

Yes, in combination with PowerChute Network Shutdown, which the card supports. PowerChute talks to the card over the network and shuts physical and virtual machines down gracefully before the battery runs out. Ask SourceIT about licensing for your host count.
