The SM311LS is the long-reach Gigabit member of the Omada SFP range: a 1310 nm single-mode transceiver rated for 20 km over 9/125 µm fibre. Where a Gigabit link has to leave the building — to a warehouse across a yard, a second block on a campus, or a remote cabinet at the end of a leased dark fibre — this is the module that covers the distance without stepping up to 10G optics.

Twenty Kilometres on a Gigabit Link

TP-Link publishes a maximum cable length of 20 km for the SM311LS over 9/125 µm single-mode fibre, running at the full 1.25 Gbps data rate under IEEE 802.3z. That reach puts almost any Singapore multi-site link within range of a single hop, and it is well over thirty times what the multi-mode TL-SM311LM manages at 550 m. The trade-off is fibre type: single-mode cabling is required end to end, and the far end needs a matching 1310 nm module.

DDM Makes a Long Run Diagnosable

The further a fibre run goes, the less convenient it is to inspect. DDM support lets the host switch read the module's live optical transmit and receive power, temperature and supply voltage, so degradation in a buried or leased run shows up as a measurable trend rather than as an unexplained outage. On a 20 km link where the far end may be in another postcode, being able to see optical power falling from the comms room is worth a great deal.

Duplex LC on Standard Single-Mode Fibre

The SM311LS uses an LC duplex connector — one strand transmitting, one receiving — which is the arrangement any standard single-mode patch lead and OSP termination expects. It is SFP-MSA compliant and hot-swappable, so it fits any Gigabit SFP cage that takes a standard module and can be replaced without taking the switch out of service. Power is the usual 3.3 V drawn from the host port, with no external supply.

Compact, Commercial-Grade and Low-EMI

At 55.4 x 13.7 x 12.9 mm the module is among the smaller units in the range, which helps in a densely populated cage row. It is rated 0–70 °C operating and -40–85 °C storage, with 10–90% RH operating humidity, non-condensing — commercial-grade figures appropriate to a ventilated comms room rather than an unconditioned outdoor cabinet.
