Four 4K screens is a real capability, with one real caveat. Lenovo publishes four 4K displays at 60 Hz, or a single 8K at 30 Hz. Whether your particular laptop can drive four independent displays depends on its own graphics, not on the dock — many integrated GPUs top out at three external screens. Tell us the laptop model and the display layout you want, and we will check the graphics limit before you order rather than after.

Thunderbolt or USB-C: what changes. A Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 host gets the full 40 Gbps link and the complete display capability. A plain USB-C host with DisplayPort Alt Mode will still drive the dock, charge from it and use its ports, but with the bandwidth its own port provides — which typically means fewer or lower-resolution displays. Both are supported; the difference is worth knowing before you promise someone four monitors.

Keep the supplied cable with the dock. The 0.7 m Thunderbolt 4 passive cable in the box is rated for the job. A generic USB-C cable will not carry Thunderbolt, and the symptom of substituting one looks like a faulty dock rather than a cable problem.

How to read a Lenovo dock part number. The four digits in the middle are the wattage of the AC adapter supplied in the box — 40AY0090 ships a 90 W adapter, 40AY0135 a 135 W one, 40B00300 a 300 W one. The power the dock actually delivers to your laptop is always lower, because the dock keeps some for itself and its ports. Confusing the two is the single most common mistake made when buying these, so this page states both figures separately and never lets the part number stand in for the charging figure.

Will it work with my laptop? Lenovo's own wording is that its USB-C and Thunderbolt docks "function with laptops that support industry standard USB-C Alt-Mode, DisplayLink or Thunderbolt protocols through their Type C port". In practice that means most business laptops of the last several years, Lenovo or otherwise. What Lenovo qualifies is the management features: MAC address pass-through, Wake-on-LAN, PXE boot and the mirrored power button work on most ThinkPads and, in Lenovo's words, "may not be available on certain other Lenovo laptops or non-Lenovo branded laptop systems". If those matter to your deployment — and for a managed fleet with imaging over the network they usually do — tell us the laptop models and we will check them before you order.

The management features are why a fleet specifies this dock. MAC address pass-through gives a docked laptop a consistent network identity wherever it sits, which matters for network access control and for imaging. Wake-on-LAN and PXE boot let IT wake and re-image a closed, docked machine. Lenovo publishes all three as supported.

How it compares with the Workstation version. The ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Workstation Dock (40B00300UK) in the ordering table is the same dock electrically — same ports, same four-display capability, same size — but ships a 300 W adapter and a split cable that carries a Slim Tip power leg, letting it charge a mobile workstation at up to 230 W. Over Thunderbolt alone it delivers 100 W, exactly like this one. If your machines are ThinkPad P-series, buy that. If they are T-, X- or E-series, buy this.

How many monitors can it really run?

Do I need a Thunderbolt laptop?

No. Lenovo states support for Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4 and Windows 10-and-above USB-C laptops. A plain USB-C machine will drive the dock and charge from it, with whatever bandwidth its own port provides — which usually means fewer displays than the headline figure. A Thunderbolt host unlocks the full 40 Gbps.

How much does it charge the laptop?

Up to 100 W, from the 135 W adapter in the box. Remember that the 0135 in the part number is the adapter's wattage, not the charging figure.

What is the difference between this and the Workstation dock?

The adapter and the cable. The Workstation dock (40B00300UK) ships a 300 W adapter and a Thunderbolt 4 split cable carrying a Slim Tip power leg, which lets it charge a mobile workstation at up to 230 W. Connected over Thunderbolt alone it delivers 100 W, the same as this dock. Ports, displays, dimensions, weight and warranty are identical.

Can I use a different Thunderbolt cable?

You can, but use a proper Thunderbolt-rated one. A generic USB-C cable will not carry Thunderbolt, and when it fails it looks like a broken dock rather than a cable problem. The 0.7 m cable supplied is the right one — keep it with the dock.

What warranty applies in Singapore?

Lenovo publishes a 3-year CRU warranty. Every unit SourceIT sells also carries local Singapore warranty support and a GST invoice.
