Per-Outlet Metering and Per-Outlet Switching on One 32 A Strip
The APC NetShelter Metered-by-Outlet with Switching Rack PDU AP8653 is the top of the 2G single-phase range: every one of its twenty-four outlets - twenty-one IEC C13 and three IEC C19 - is individually metered and individually switchable over the network. You see exactly what each server draws, and you can power-cycle any one of them from a browser without walking to the rack. Schneider's earlier catalogue name for this unit was "Rack PDU 2G, Switched Plus"; it is the same product.
For a colocation cage, a hosting provider billing by the kilowatt-hour, or a Singapore data centre that needs to prove which rack is drawing what, per-outlet measurement to ±3% is the feature that justifies the price over a bank-metered strip.
32 A and 7.4 kW on a Captive IEC 60309 Cord
Input is a 3 m attached cord ending in an IEC 60309 32 A 2P+E plug - the blue commando connector - and Schneider rates the strip at 7,400 VA. That needs a 32 A commando socket on a dedicated circuit in the rack, which is a fixed electrical installation; budget for the electrician if it is not already there. In return you get enough capacity to run a full rack of dual-PSU servers from one strip.
Network Management Built In, With a Sensor Port and LCD
Web, SNMP, Telnet and SSH access are standard, with reporting into EcoStruxure IT. A local LCD shows current, power and voltage at the strip, a port takes an APC temperature or temperature and humidity sensor, and a serial configuration cable and CAN terminator are in the box. Alarm thresholds warn you before a circuit overloads, and power-on sequencing delays stop a rack full of servers starting at once after an outage.
A Full-Height 0U Strip - Measure Your Rack First
This is a 1,829 mm vertical strip, 56 mm wide and 51 mm deep, weighing 8.23 kg. It is designed for a full-height 42U enclosure and mounts toolless in the rear vertical channel, consuming no rack units. The outlets accept APC locking input cords, so a cable cannot be nudged out of its socket during a rack tidy.

Compatibility & Rack Fit
What you can plug into it. Twenty-one IEC C13 outlets for C14-corded servers, switches and appliances, plus three IEC C19 outlets for C20-corded blade chassis, storage shelves and core switches. Twenty-four outlets is enough to cable most full-height racks from one strip, and every outlet accepts APC locking input cords.
Load planning and banks. 32 A input, 7,400 VA total, split across two 16 A banks. Because every outlet is metered you can see which bank is heavier and move a server across before it trips, and the alarm thresholds let the PDU tell you before you get there. Twenty-four outlets on 7.4 kW is modest per-outlet draw - the sockets are there for reach, not so every one can pull its maximum.
Rack fit. A 0U vertical strip 1,829 mm long, 56 mm wide and 51 mm deep, weighing 8.23 kg - a full-height unit that needs a 42U enclosure with a rear vertical channel. It is slightly longer than the 1,791 mm AP8853. In a short cabinet the 2U AP7822B gives the same 32 A supply horizontally, though without per-outlet metering or switching.
Feeding it. A captive 3 m IEC 60309 32 A 2P+E commando cord. The rack needs a matching 32 A commando socket on a dedicated circuit. If the site only has 16 A supplies, the AP8659 is the same per-outlet metered and switched unit at 16 A through a C20 inlet.
Management and sensors. Web, SNMP, Telnet and SSH built in, reporting into EcoStruxure IT, with an LCD at the strip. The sensor port takes an APC temperature probe or the AP9335TH temperature and humidity sensor - worth adding in Singapore, where a failed cooling unit turns into a thermal problem within minutes.
What it does not do. No surge protection - that is a UPS function. And no battery: a switched PDU controls power, it does not store it, so a UPS upstream is still required for ride-through. The AP9640 and AP9641 cards we sell are Smart-UPS accessories and have nothing to do with this PDU; its network management is built in.

Locking Output Cords (Sold Separately)
These are the cords that run from this unit's C13 outlets to your equipment's C14 inlets. The locking design stops a cord being nudged out of its outlet while you work in the rack - a common and entirely avoidable cause of an unplanned reboot. Note that this is an output cord kit, not this unit's supply cord - if you also need an input cord, tell us and we will quote the right type for this model.

Is this the "Rack PDU 2G, Switched Plus" model?
Yes. AP8653 was catalogued as Rack PDU 2G, Switched Plus, Zero U, 32A, 230V; Schneider now lists it as the NetShelter Metered-by-Outlet with Switching Rack PDU, 2G, 0U, 32A, 230V. Same part number, same product - twenty-one C13 and three C19 outlets, each metered and each switchable.
What does metered-by-outlet actually give me over bank metering?
A current, power and energy reading for every individual outlet, to ±3%, rather than one figure per breaker bank. That lets you attribute consumption to a specific server or tenant, spot a power supply that is drawing more than it should, and see exactly how much headroom each bank has before you add the next machine.
What can I do remotely with the switching?
Turn any outlet on or off, power-cycle a hung server or switch, set the order and delay in which outlets come up after a power failure, and lock an outlet so it cannot be switched by accident. All of it through the built-in web, SNMP, Telnet or SSH interface.
What supply does it need?
A 32 A IEC 60309 2P+E commando socket on a dedicated circuit. The 3 m cord is attached, so nothing to buy, but the socket is a fixed electrical installation. If you only have 16 A supplies, the AP8659 is the same unit at 16 A with a C20 inlet.
Can I add temperature and humidity monitoring?
Yes. The sensor port takes an APC temperature probe or the AP9335TH temperature and humidity sensor, sold separately, and the readings appear alongside power in the web interface and in EcoStruxure IT.
Does it have surge protection?
No. Schneider's specification guide for the AP8653 contains no surge section, joule rating or clamping figure. Surge and sag protection belongs at a UPS upstream.
How does it compare with the APDU9953 in the 9000 series?
Both are 0U, 32 A, 7.4 kW, 1,829 mm strips with twenty-one C13 and three C19 outlets on a captive IEC 60309 cord. The AP8653 is the 2G generation and meters every outlet individually; the APDU9953 is the newer 9000-series switched unit with Gigabit Ethernet and the NMC3 platform, but it is not metered per outlet. Choose on whether per-outlet energy data matters to you.
How long is the strip and will it fit my rack?
