The APC NetShelter Metered-by-Outlet with Switching Rack PDU AP8659 brings per-outlet metering and per-outlet switching to a rack that only has a 16 A supply. Each of its twenty-four outlets - twenty-one IEC C13 and three IEC C19 - reports its own current, power and energy to ±3%, and each can be switched on, off or power-cycled over the network. It is the 16 A sibling of the 32 A AP8653.
That combination is what a Singapore colocation tenant or managed-service provider needs when the bill is per kilowatt-hour and the on-call engineer would rather reboot a frozen firewall from home than drive to the cage at 2 a.m.
16 A Through an IEC C20 Inlet
Schneider rates the AP8659 at 16 A on 230 V, with a nominal input of 200 to 230 V and an accepted range of 100 to 240 VAC. The inlet is an IEC 60320 C20, so it takes a standard C19-to-C20 cord from a rack UPS outlet or a row PDU - no commando socket required. Schneider's published load figure for this part number is 3,300 VA, which is the North American 208 V rating; the 16 A limit is what governs the strip on a 230 V supply.
Built-In Management, LCD and a Sensor Port
Web, HTTPS, SNMP, Telnet and SSH access are standard, reporting into EcoStruxure IT, and Schneider includes a one-year Secure Network Management Card subscription. A local display shows the load at the strip, a port takes an APC temperature or temperature and humidity sensor, and user-defined alarm thresholds warn you before a circuit is overloaded. Outlets accept APC locking input cords.
A Full-Height 0U Strip at 6 kg
The AP8659 is 1,829 mm long, 56 mm wide and 51 mm deep, weighing 6.09 kg - a full-height unit for a 42U enclosure with a rear vertical channel, mounted toolless and consuming no rack units. It is rated to operate from -5 to 60 °C, which gives useful margin in a hot-aisle or a cabinet whose cooling is marginal.

Compatibility & Rack Fit
What you can plug into it. Twenty-one IEC C13 outlets for C14-corded servers, switches, firewalls and appliances, plus three IEC C19 outlets for C20-corded storage shelves and larger switches. The locking receptacles work with APC locking input cords so a lead cannot be pulled out during a rack tidy.
Load planning. 16 A total at 230 V, shared by twenty-four outlets. Because every outlet is metered, you can see exactly where the amps are going and move a server to another strip before the limit is reached; the alarm thresholds give you the warning in advance. Plan against total nameplate current, not outlet count, and remember that 16 A is the strip - a rack of dual-PSU servers usually needs the 32 A AP8653 or two 16 A strips on A and B feeds.
Feeding it. An IEC C20 inlet. Schneider does not list an input cord in the package contents for this part, so ask us to quote the right C19-to-C20 cord when you order. The supply should be a 16 A outlet - a C19 on a rack UPS or on a row PDU. If the rack has a 16 A IEC 60309 socket instead, tell us and we will quote a locking C19-to-IEC 60309 lead.
Rack fit. A 0U strip 1,829 mm long, 56 mm wide and 51 mm deep, weighing 6.09 kg. It needs a full-height enclosure with a rear vertical channel and mounts toolless, consuming no rack units. In a short cabinet the 1U switched AP7921B gives eight switched C13 outlets at 16 A, though with aggregate rather than per-outlet metering.
Management and sensors. Web, HTTPS, SNMP, Telnet and SSH built in, reporting into EcoStruxure IT, with a one-year Secure NMC subscription included. The sensor port takes an APC temperature probe or the AP9335TH temperature and humidity sensor - the one most Singapore sites want, given how quickly rack inlet temperature and humidity both matter here.
What it does not do. No surge protection and no battery - a switched PDU controls power, it does not condition or store it, so a UPS is still required upstream. The AP9640 and AP9641 cards we sell are Smart-UPS accessories and have nothing to do with this PDU.

Locking Output Cords (Sold Separately)
These are the cords that run from this unit's C13 outlets to your equipment's C14 inlets. The locking design stops a cord being nudged out of its outlet while you work in the rack - a common and entirely avoidable cause of an unplanned reboot. Note that this is an output cord kit, not this unit's supply cord - if you also need an input cord, tell us and we will quote the right type for this model.

Frequently Asked Questions — APC AP8659
Why does Schneider print 20 A / 208 V and 16 A / 230 V on the same part?
Because the AP8659 is sold worldwide. On a North American 208 V supply it is rated 20 A; on a 230 V supply such as Singapore's it is rated 16 A. The 3,300 VA load figure in Schneider's data sheet is the 208 V rating. In Singapore, plan around 16 A at 230 V.
Does it come with a power cord?
Schneider's package contents for the AP8659 list the PDU, brackets, CAN terminator, serial cable and documentation, but no input cord. The inlet is an IEC C20, so you need a C19-to-C20 lead from your UPS or row PDU - ask us and we will add the right one to the quote.
What does metered-by-outlet give me over the AP8858's bank metering?
A separate current, power and energy reading for every one of the twenty-four outlets, to ±3%, rather than one figure for the whole strip. That is what you need to bill a tenant, find a power supply that is drawing more than it should, or know exactly which server to move when a strip is near its limit.
What can I do remotely with the switching?
Turn any outlet on or off, power-cycle a hung device, set the power-on sequence and delays after an outage, and lock outlets against accidental switching - all from the built-in web, SNMP, Telnet or SSH interface, or through EcoStruxure IT.
Can I add temperature and humidity monitoring?
Yes. The sensor port takes an APC temperature probe or the AP9335TH temperature and humidity sensor, sold separately.
What is the difference between the AP8659 and the AP8653?
Input capacity only. Both are 1,829 mm strips with twenty-one C13 and three C19 outlets, each metered and switched. The AP8659 is 16 A through a C20 inlet; the AP8653 is 32 A through a captive IEC 60309 commando cord, giving 7.4 kW. If the rack has a 32 A socket and a heavy server load, take the AP8653.
Does it have surge protection?
No. Schneider's specification guide for the AP8659 has no surge section, joule rating or clamping figure. Put a UPS upstream if you need surge and sag protection.
Is a network card needed?
No - network management is built in. Web, SNMP, Telnet and SSH are standard and there is nothing to fit. The AP9640 and AP9641 cards are for Smart-UPS units, not for this PDU.
