One Desk, Three Devices, Too Many Cables. There's a Better Way.

A desk with a laptop, a second computer and a phone can run on one cable to the laptop and one button to switch computers. A USB-C hub monitor or dock carries video, USB data, network and laptop charging over a single USB-C connection, and a monitor with a built-in KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch, or a small external KVM, lets the second computer share the same screen, keyboard and mouse. The phone charges from a spare USB port on the monitor or dock.

Below we match the common desk problems to the right fix, using the Dell Pro 24 Plus P2425DE, AOC Q27P4C and Dell Pro 34 Plus P3425WE monitors, the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock, the Targus DOCK419AP USB-C dock and the ATEN CS22H KVM switch.

Which fix suits your desk?

Desk problem Fix Example from the store (as listed 24 Oct 2026)

What makes a single-cable desk possible?

Two standards do the work. VESA describes DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C as "video, SuperSpeed USB and power, all on one connector", using the Alternate Mode extension of the USB Type-C interface. USB Power Delivery handles the charging: the USB-IF notes that USB PD was limited to 100 W at 20 V using USB Type-C cables rated at 5 A, and Revision 3.1 raised the ceiling to 240 W. The catch is that the laptop's USB-C port has to support DisplayPort Alt Mode (or Thunderbolt/USB4) and accept charging. If you are not sure what yours does, start with Your Laptop Has USB-C. So Why Doesn't Everything Work?, and for wattage questions see Why Your Laptop Charger Isn't Charging Your Laptop.

Option 1: a USB-C hub monitor for one laptop

For most office laptops this is the tidiest answer, because the monitor replaces both the charger and the dock. The Dell Pro 24 Plus P2425DE (S$373.37) is a 24" QHD 100 Hz screen whose USB-C upstream port carries DisplayPort 1.4 video, data and up to 90 W of power. The built-in hub adds Gigabit RJ45, one USB-C and three USB-A ports, and a DisplayPort-out port with MST lets you chain a second monitor where the laptop's graphics support it. A USB-C cable rated 100 W is in the box. Check the laptop's original adapter first: if it is larger than 90 W, the laptop may charge more slowly on the monitor. The listing states a 3-year Limited Hardware Warranty with Advanced Exchange Service.

Option 2: a monitor with a built-in KVM for two computers

When a company laptop and a desktop (or a personal laptop) share one desk, a KVM monitor stops the second keyboard and mouse from piling up. The AOC Q27P4C (S$307.50) is a 27" QHD 120 Hz monitor with USB-C at a typical 96 W, plus HDMI and DisplayPort inputs; per the listing, its built-in KVM shares one keyboard and mouse between two computers. The listing describes it as an order-in item, so ask for the current lead time. AOC gives 3 years parts and labour.

If you want both machines visible at once, the Dell Pro 34 Plus P3425WE (S$649.21) adds Picture by Picture and Picture in Picture to its KVM, with a USB-C upstream port at up to 90 W for the laptop and a USB-B upstream port for the second PC, plus RJ45 and daisy-chain support. Whether one wide screen beats two smaller ones depends on the work; One Monitor or Two? The Office Productivity Debate weighs it up.

Option 3: a dock when the monitor has no USB-C

Keep the monitors you already own and put a dock between them and the laptop. The Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock (S$360.00) charges at up to 100 W from its 135 W adapter and has two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, HDMI 2.1 and a Thunderbolt 4 downstream port; Lenovo quotes up to four 4K 60 Hz displays, though the laptop's graphics may limit how many you actually get. It also has four 10 Gbps USB-A ports and Gigabit Ethernet, and lists Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4 and USB-C laptops as compatible.

For a single screen on a budget, the Targus USB-C 4K HDMI/VGA Docking Station DOCK419AP (S$101.04) passes up to 100 W from your own USB-C PD charger, since no adapter is included, and offers HDMI at up to 4K 30 Hz, VGA, two USB-A ports, one USB-C port and Gigabit Ethernet. It needs a laptop port with DisplayPort Alt Mode. Before buying any dock, run through Your New Docking Station Doesn't Work? Here's What You Missed., and for Lenovo's range see which Lenovo docking station is better.

Option 4: an external KVM switch for existing screens

If both computers use HDMI and the monitor stays, the ATEN CS22H 2-Port USB 4K HDMI Cable KVM Switch (S$126.83) lets one monitor, keyboard and mouse control two HDMI computers at up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz. Its KVM cables are built in, it is bus-powered so there is no extra power brick, and a 1.8 m remote port selector sits on the desk for switching. ATEN's local terms are 2 years carry-in.

Count the cables that cross the desk, not the ports on the back. One cable to the laptop is the goal; everything else can live behind the monitor.

Where does the third device go?

Usually the phone, and it rarely needs its own charger. The AOC Q27P4C and Dell P3425WE each have a downstream USB-C port rated at 15 W, and the Lenovo dock's downstream USB-C port is also 15 W. A headset dongle or webcam can use the same hub, which matters if you are upgrading audio as well; Can a S$300 Headset Save Your Company Thousands in Lost Productivity? covers that decision.

Checklist before you standardise a desk

  • Laptop port: DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt or USB4, and charging on that port.
  • Power: monitor or dock output at least equal to the laptop's original adapter.
  • Cables: use the one in the box, or a USB-C cable rated for the wattage.
  • Second computer: built-in KVM monitor or external KVM, and which inputs it uses.
  • Shared desks: one standard model across hot desks, as Hot Desking Sounds Great Until Nobody Can Connect Their Laptop explains.
  • Running cost: a USB-C hub monitor's maximum power figure includes what it passes to the laptop; see how much power your IT equipment consumes.
  • Mounting: a monitor arm lifts the screen and hides cables; compare in Ergotron LX vs HX.

Frequently asked questions

Can one USB-C cable charge my laptop and run a monitor? Yes, if the laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode (or Thunderbolt/USB4) and charging, and the monitor supplies enough power. The Dell P2425DE, for example, delivers up to 90 W over its USB-C port.

What is a KVM monitor? A monitor with a built-in keyboard, video and mouse switch, so two computers share one screen, keyboard and mouse. The AOC Q27P4C and Dell P3425WE both list a KVM function.

Do I need a dock if I buy a USB-C hub monitor? Often not. A hub monitor such as the P2425DE adds Ethernet and USB ports. A dock makes sense for extra screens, more ports or monitors without USB-C.

Will a Thunderbolt 4 dock work with a USB-C laptop? The listing for the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock includes USB-C laptops as compatible, but notes that plain USB-C hosts get less bandwidth, which usually limits the number of displays.

Why does my laptop charge slowly on a USB-C monitor? The monitor may supply less than the laptop's own adapter, or the cable may be rated too low. USB PD at 100 W needs a cable rated at 5 A.

Can I switch two computers on a monitor I already own? Yes, with an external KVM switch such as the ATEN CS22H, which handles two HDMI computers at up to 4K 60 Hz and has a remote port selector.
