Is Your Business Ready for the End of Another Popular Operating System?
Your business is ready for an operating system's end of support when you know exactly which devices and servers run it, which date applies to each, and whether each one will be upgraded, covered by paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) for a fixed period, or replaced. Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025, Office 2021 followed on 13 October 2026, and Windows Server 2016 leaves extended support in January 2027, so most Singapore offices have something on the list.
Below are the Microsoft lifecycle dates that matter, what ESU does and does not cover, how to inventory and test, and what a sensible refresh looks like, with store examples including the ASUS ExpertBook B1 B1403CVA, Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7, ASUS NUC 15 Pro Tall, Microsoft 365 Apps for business and Windows Server 2025 Standard.
Which Microsoft lifecycle dates should Singapore businesses track?
| Product | Date (Microsoft lifecycle) | Status | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 (all editions, final version 22H2) | 14 Oct 2025 | End of support | Upgrade, replace or enrol in ESU |
| Office 2016, Office 2019, Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 | 14 Oct 2025 | End of support | Move to Microsoft 365 or a supported version |
| Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 | 13 Oct 2026 | Retired / end of support | Plan the replacement now |
| Windows 11 Home and Pro, version 24H2 | 13 Oct 2026 | End of servicing | Update to a newer Windows 11 version |
| Windows 11 Enterprise and Education, version 23H2 | 10 Nov 2026 | End of servicing | Update before the date |
| Windows Server 2012 / 2012 R2 (ESU Year 3) | 13 Oct 2026 | ESU ended | Migrate now |
| Windows Server 2016 | January 2027 | Extended support ends | Migration should be scheduled |
| Windows Server 2025 | November 2034 | Extended end date | Longest runway for a new server |
What actually happens when Windows reaches end of support?
Nothing dramatic on the day. Microsoft says "PCs running Windows 10 will continue to function", but they "will no longer receive regular security updates", and Microsoft no longer provides software updates, security fixes or technical assistance. The result is a device that is "more vulnerable and susceptible to viruses and malware". The PC still boots, so it drifts further behind unnoticed. Forgotten machines are a common weak point, as we covered in The Most Dangerous Device in Your Office Might Be the One Nobody Manages.
Is Windows 10 ESU a plan or just a bridge?
It is a bridge. ESU provides "critical and important security updates through an annual subscription service after support ends". Commercial and education organisations can cover enrolled PCs for a maximum of three years, with Year One starting in November 2025 at USD 61 per device; Microsoft says the price doubles every consecutive year, and because ESU is cumulative, joining in Year Two means paying for Year One too. Devices must run Windows 10 version 22H2.
ESU excludes new features, non-security fixes and general technical support. Microsoft includes it at no additional cost for Windows 10 virtual machines in Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop. A consumer programme also exists, with enrolment open until 12 October 2027, but PCs joined to Active Directory or Microsoft Entra, or enrolled in MDM, are not offered it, so managed business PCs belong in the commercial programme. Use ESU for machines that really cannot move yet, not as the default.
How do you build an operating system inventory?
For every PC, laptop and server record the OS edition and version, processor, RAM, TPM version and Secure Boot status, the Office version, the business software and printer or scanner drivers it depends on, and its owner, location and warranty end date. Include the reception PC, the meeting-room PC and the old server running one legacy application. Our post on preparing for Windows Server 2012 end of support covers the server side, and why non-genuine Microsoft software is a cybersecurity risk covers a problem inventories often uncover.
Can your existing PCs run Windows 11?
Microsoft's minimum is a 1 GHz or faster processor "with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)", 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12 graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a 720p display larger than 9 inches. The compatible-processor and TPM 2.0 lines are where most older office PCs fail. If a PC passes but is already slow, read Think Your Office PC Is Slow? It Might Not Need Replacing. before replacing it.
How should you test compatibility before migrating?
Pilot with each department and each critical application, driver and security agent. Windows 11 versions have their own servicing dates too, so treat feature updates as a recurring project with test rings, the same discipline we describe in The Next Big Software Update Could Break Your Meeting Room. Are You Prepared? If more of your work now lives in the cloud, When a Global Cloud Service Goes Down, Does Your Office Stop Working? covers keeping files usable offline.
What replaces Office 2016, 2019 and 2021?
For most SMEs the replacement is a subscription. Microsoft 365 Apps for business (S$153.50 per user for 12 months) licenses the desktop Office apps and OneDrive storage; its listing notes it does not include an Exchange Online mailbox. If you also need hosted email and Teams, look at Microsoft 365 Business Premium (S$335.00 per user for 12 months). Subscriptions stop working when the term ends, so put renewals on the same calendar as lifecycle dates.
What about servers, Macs and mobile devices?
Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 have used up their final ESU year, Windows Server 2016 follows in January 2027, and Windows Server 2022 moved to extended support on 13 October 2026, which still includes security updates. A new server on Windows Server 2025 Standard 8 Core Pack, 12-month subscription (S$365.00) sits on a lifecycle running to November 2034. As the listing explains, Microsoft requires every physical core to be licensed, with a minimum of 8 per processor and 16 per server.
Apple does not publish a fixed support period; its security releases page lists updates for current versions and some older branches, such as iOS 18.7.10 for iPhone XS and XR and iOS 15.8.8 for iPhone 6s and 7 models. Android policies vary by maker; Google, for example, states that Pixel 8 and later get 7 years of OS and security updates.
What does a sensible PC refresh plan look like?
Phase it: Windows 11 failures first, then out-of-warranty machines, then the rest. Standardise on one or two models, as set out in Before You Buy 50 Office Laptops, Read This., and order early, because supply and pricing can move (see When Global Chip Supply Gets Tight, Who Gets the Hardware First?, Why a Global Shipping Disruption Can Delay Your Next Office Upgrade and From Global Chip Wars to Your Office Desk: Why IT Prices Can Change Overnight).
- ASUS ExpertBook B1 B1403CVA-NJ1209X (S$1,499.00): Core 7 150U, 16 GB DDR5 in two SO-DIMM slots, Windows 11 Pro, TPM 2.0 and, per the listing, 3 years of next-business-day onsite service including the battery. Code EXPERTBOOK10 gives 10% off the B1 and P3 14-inch until 30 November 2026; see ASUS ExpertBook B1 vs P3.
- Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 5 325 (S$2,301.00): Windows 11 Pro, discrete TPM 2.0, replaceable LPCAMM2 memory and 3 years onsite, which Lenovo qualifies with a one-year battery term.
- ASUS NUC 15 Pro Tall Core Ultra 5 225H (S$1,485.25): a desktop replacement with Windows 11 Pro, firmware TPM 2.0, a VESA bracket and a 3-year onsite warranty.
End of support is a calendar problem before it is a hardware problem. The businesses that cope best are the ones that knew the date, and the device list, a year early.
