Haze Cancels Outdoor Activities. Can Learning Continue Without Interruption?

Yes, learning can carry on with little interruption when haze cancels outdoor activities, provided the school has already decided where the lesson moves to and the room is equipped to take it. The switch from field or court to classroom is mainly a logistics problem: a display the teacher can write on, a way to share content without cables, audio everyone can hear and, where classes are combined or split, a camera and microphone to link rooms.

This guide covers why haze changes come at short notice, what NEA and MOE publish, and the kit that makes the move quick: the Samsung WM55R Flip 2 interactive display, the Barco ClickShare C-5 Gen-2, the Yealink UVC40 E2 video bar and the Yealink SP92 speakerphone. Technology keeps the lesson going; health and activity decisions belong to MOE, NEA and each school.

Outdoor activity cancelled: what replaces it indoors?

Planned outdoor activity Indoor or hybrid alternative Kit that makes it work
PE lesson on the field Theory, rules and tactics session with video clips and annotation Interactive display, wireless presentation
Combined-level outdoor briefing or assembly One teacher presents from one room; other classrooms watch and ask questions Video bar plus laptop running Teams, Zoom or Google Meet
Outdoor science or field-observation activity Indoor demonstration shown live on a large screen USB camera or video bar, display
Small-group outdoor work (CCA, enrichment) Groups in separate rooms joined by a call Portable speakerphone and laptop per group

Why do haze changes arrive at such short notice?

NEA's advice is built around short time windows. On haze.gov.sg, health advisories are tied to the 1-hour PM2.5 reading in four bands, from Band 1 (Normal) to Band 4 (Very High), and each advisory applies "for the next hour". NEA's guide on planning outdoor activities during haze says to use the 1-hour PM2.5 readings for immediate activities and the 24-hour PSI forecast for activities the next day. The same guide lists children among vulnerable persons, alongside the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic lung or heart disease. For vulnerable persons, NEA's advice moves from avoiding strenuous outdoor activity in Band 2 to avoiding all outdoor activity in Bands 3 and 4.

So a decision can change between morning assembly and a mid-morning PE period. Readings and advisories are published at haze.gov.sg, nea.gov.sg and on the myENV app; schools follow MOE's instructions, and parents should check those official sources rather than any vendor's summary, including ours.

What do MOE and NEA say about schools during haze?

MOE's haze management page states that MOE has a school continuity plan for haze situations, that student well-being remains a key priority, and that teachers will look out for students who are unwell or have pre-existing lung or heart conditions. It also asks parents to make sure children carry any required medication, such as inhalers. NEA's news release of 4 September 2026 noted that all classrooms of primary and secondary schools, junior colleges and Millennia Institute, MOE Kindergartens and Special Education schools have been equipped with air purifiers. That makes the classroom the natural place for a displaced lesson. For how haze fits into wider organisational planning, see The Haze Might Be Temporary. Your Business Continuity Problems Aren't.

Which classroom AV makes the switch quick?

Start with the screen and how content reaches it. A teacher who spends ten minutes hunting for an HDMI adapter has lost the lesson.

An interactive display replaces the whiteboard and the projector in one. The Samsung WM55R 55" Flip 2 4K UHD Interactive Display (S$1,237.50) uses Samsung's InGlass touch, runs its whiteboard on the display itself (Tizen 5.0) so no PC is needed for writing, and has two HDMI inputs, USB, RJ45, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with screen mirroring and AirPlay 2 support, according to its listing. It is a last-batch Flip 2 at a promotional price. Mounted on the Samsung STN-WM55R Portable Stand (S$850.00), one board can serve whichever room the lesson moves to. See also digital whiteboards for remote students and our Samsung display guide covers sizing.

Wireless presentation removes the cable hunt. The Barco ClickShare C-5 Gen-2 (S$1,193.40) lets a teacher share from a laptop or mobile device through the ClickShare App, or natively via AirPlay, Google Cast and Miracast, at up to 4K (3840 x 2160) at 30 Hz. It shows one source at a time and ships without a Button. Barco's warranty is 1 year standard, with 5 years coverage when the unit is registered with Barco SmartCare.

Can one teacher reach several classrooms at once?

Yes, and it is often the best option when a combined activity is cancelled and no hall is free. The lead teacher presents in one room; other classes join the same call from their own displays, each with a supervising adult. The Yealink UVC40 E2 All-in-One USB UHD 4K Video Bar (S$645.00) combines a 4K camera with a 120° field of view, Auto Framing and Speaker Tracking, an 8-microphone array and a 5 W speaker, and connects to the teacher's laptop over USB, so it works with Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Google Meet running on that laptop. Yealink positions it for small and medium rooms, so in a full classroom it covers the teacher and front rows best; expansion microphones extend pickup.

For a small group or a breakout room, the Yealink SP92 USB & Bluetooth Speakerphone (S$94.50) connects by USB or Bluetooth, has AI noise cancellation and lists up to 20 hours of talk time, so it can sit on a group table without a power point. More on speakerphone choices is in our Yealink speakerphone comparison, and teaching into a room when the teacher is elsewhere is covered in What Happens When a Teacher Can't Be in the Classroom?

Haze turns an outdoor lesson into a room-change problem. Schools that solve the room in advance keep the lesson.

Be realistic about the limits. A linked lesson is not the same as having everyone in one place: calls have a slight delay, remote rooms ask fewer questions, and practical outdoor skills cannot be fully replaced by a screen. Good audio and a clear camera help, but each room still needs supervision.

What should a school prepare before it is needed?

The kit is the easy part. What keeps a short-notice change smooth is a written arrangement staff have rehearsed once:

  • Fallback rooms: name which indoor spaces each outdoor activity moves to, and how they are booked at short notice.
  • A default meeting link: set up a standing Teams, Zoom or Meet session per level so classes can join without new invitations.
  • Network check: confirm the classroom Wi-Fi or wired port can carry several video calls at once.
  • Indoor lesson packs: PE teachers keep slides and clips ready to run indoors.
  • One owner: a named staff member who tests the rooms each term.

Frequently asked questions

Who decides whether outdoor school activities are cancelled during haze? Schools follow MOE's instructions and their own procedures. NEA publishes air-quality readings and health advisories at haze.gov.sg, nea.gov.sg and the myENV app. SourceIT does not give health advice; check those official sources.

Why can haze plans change within the same morning? NEA's health advisories are tied to the 1-hour PM2.5 reading and apply for the next hour. NEA advises using 1-hour PM2.5 readings for immediate activities and the 24-hour PSI forecast for the next day.

What is the minimum kit to move an outdoor lesson indoors? A display, a reliable way to share content from the teacher's laptop and audio the whole room can hear. An interactive display such as the Samsung Flip 2 and a wireless presentation system such as the Barco ClickShare C-5 Gen-2 cover most of it.

Can one teacher teach several classes at once over video? Yes. The lead room uses a camera and microphones, such as the Yealink UVC40 E2 connected to a laptop, and the other classes join the same call from their displays. Each room still needs a supervising adult.

Does a linked lesson work as well as being outdoors together? Not fully. Good AV makes a combined session easier to follow, but there is some delay, remote rooms tend to interact less and practical outdoor skills cannot be fully taught through a screen.
