One Monitor or Two? The Office Productivity Debate
For most office work, two monitors beat one when your job involves comparing or copying between two things at once, such as a spreadsheet and a source document, code and a browser, or a call and your notes. If your day is mostly one window at a time (email, one document, one system), a laptop plus a single good external monitor is enough, and a 34-inch ultrawide is the tidy middle ground when you want two-screen space without a bezel down the middle.
This guide compares the three setups SourceIT quotes most often for Singapore offices, using real store examples: two Dell Pro 24 Plus P2425D or P2425DE QHD monitors, one Dell Pro 34 Plus P3425WE curved ultrawide, and the arm and dock you need to make two screens practical. We won't quote a productivity percentage we can't source; this is about fit.
Dual monitors vs ultrawide vs laptop plus one: quick comparison
| Setup | Best for | Desk width needed | What else you need | Store example (23 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laptop + one 24" QHD | Admin, sales, hot-desks | About 54 cm for the screen | One USB-C cable if the monitor has a USB-C hub | Dell P2425DE S$373.37 |
| Two 24" QHD, daisy-chained | Finance, analysts, developers on Windows | About 108 cm for two screens | A laptop whose USB-C video supports MST | P2425DE + Dell P2425D S$667.92 total |
| Two 24" QHD via a dock | Mixed laptop fleets | About 108 cm | A multi-display dock and its driver | 2 x P2425D + j5create JCD543 S$723.20 total |
| One 34" ultrawide | Timelines, wide spreadsheets, one-cable desks | About 82 cm | One USB-C cable | Dell P3425WE S$649.21 |
| Add-on: dual monitor arm | Any two-screen desk | Frees the space under both screens | A desk edge or grommet to clamp to | Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side S$386.00 |
Prices are as listed on 23 Oct 2026 and all five items were in stock at the time of writing. Widths are from Dell's listed dimensions: 538.70 mm per P2425DE without stand and 815.95 mm for the P3425WE, before you allow a gap or speakers.
When does a second monitor actually help?
A second screen pays off when you constantly move between two windows that both need to be visible. Typical examples: reconciling a bank statement against a ledger, writing a report while reading the brief, reviewing a contract against the previous version, or keeping a Teams call on one screen while you share or take notes on the other. Windows makes this simple: Microsoft's guidance is to press Windows+P and choose Extend, then drag the displays in Settings so they match how they sit on your desk. Its "Remember window locations based on monitor connection" option helps people who dock daily.
It helps less when the work is single-task. If you spend the day in one line-of-business system, a second screen tends to become a place to park email, which is not always a productivity win. A sharper single QHD monitor often helps more than a second cheap one.
Which setup suits which role?
Finance and accounts. Two screens or an ultrawide. Wide spreadsheets favour the P3425WE's 3440 x 1440 canvas; side-by-side reconciliation favours two separate 24-inch QHD screens so each document can be maximised on its own display.
Design and marketing. One larger, colour-consistent main screen matters more than two mismatched ones. If you go dual, buy two of the same model so colour and brightness match.
Developers. Two screens with one rotated to portrait is a popular layout for code and documentation. The Dell P2425D's stand pivots ±90°, and the Ergotron arm rotates 360° per screen, so portrait is a setting, not a project.
Admin, sales and hot-desk users. Laptop plus one USB-C monitor. The P2425DE carries video, data, Gigabit Ethernet and up to 90 W of charging over one USB-C cable, so people plug in one lead and start work. For 24-inch versus 27-inch and 4K questions, read Your 4K Monitor Might Be Making Work Harder before you buy; higher resolution is not automatically more usable space.
Ultrawide or two monitors: which is better?
An ultrawide gives you one continuous surface with no bezel in the middle, one cable and one stand, and it suits timelines, Gantt charts and very wide sheets. The trade-offs: no portrait half, a very wide strip when you share the whole screen on a call, and one failure takes out all your screen space.
Two monitors cost a little more in total once you add an arm, but each screen can be angled, rotated or replaced on its own, and sharing one screen on a call is cleaner. For a 34-inch ultrawide on an arm, our Ergotron HX ultrawide arm review covers the heavier-duty option.
Will two monitors fit your desk?
Two 24-inch QHD panels need roughly 108 cm of width before any gap; two 27-inch screens need more. On the 1200 mm and 1400 mm desks common in offices, two 24-inch screens fit comfortably while two 27-inch screens can crowd a 1200 mm desk once a laptop sits beside them. Depth matters too: OSHA's computer workstation guidance gives a preferred viewing distance of 50 to 100 cm, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Shallow desks push screens too close.
A dual arm solves both. The Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm holds two displays of 3.2 to 9.1 kg each on one pole, with 33 cm of lift and up to 64 cm of reach, and Ergotron sizes it for screens up to about 27 inches each. It frees the desk under both monitors and lets you push them back to a comfortable distance. Our usual advice: if one screen is your main screen, put it directly in front of you and the second to the side; if you use both equally, centre the pair so the gap sits in front of your nose. How do you connect two monitors to a laptop?
The laptop, not the monitor, decides what is possible. Three common routes:
- Daisy-chain (MST). The Dell P2425DE has a DisplayPort-out port with Multi-Stream Transport, so a second monitor with a DisplayPort input, such as the P2425D, chains from it over the one USB-C cable. Dell notes this works where the source GPU supports MST.
- Multi-display dock. The j5create JCD543 (S$134.10) drives up to three external displays and passes up to 100 W of charging, but its listing says a driver is required on Windows and macOS, and HDMI or DisplayPort output is 4K at 30 Hz, so pair it with QHD or Full HD screens rather than 4K.
- Thunderbolt or USB4 dock. The most predictable route for two high-resolution screens on laptops that have the port.

What we usually recommend
For a typical Singapore SME rolling out new desks: laptop users get one USB-C hub monitor such as the P2425DE as standard, and roles that live in two documents at once get a second matching screen on a dual arm. Ultrawides suit wide spreadsheets and timelines. Buy matching models in one batch, and confirm the laptop's video support before ordering docks. Our hybrid office checklist covers the rest of the desk.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to have one monitor or two for work? Two monitors help when you regularly work with two windows side by side, such as a spreadsheet and a source document. For single-task work, a laptop plus one good QHD monitor is usually enough.
Is a 34-inch ultrawide better than two 24-inch monitors? An ultrawide gives one seamless screen and one cable, which suits wide spreadsheets and timelines. Two monitors allow a portrait screen, cleaner screen sharing and independent angles, and one failed screen does not take out all of your workspace.
Can my laptop run two external monitors from one USB-C port? It depends on the port. Daisy-chaining through a monitor such as the Dell P2425DE needs MST support from the laptop's graphics, and docks may need a driver. Check the port first, then the dock.
How wide a desk do I need for two monitors? Two 24-inch monitors need about 108 cm of width before any gap. Two 27-inch screens need more and can crowd a 1200 mm desk once a laptop sits beside them.
How far should my monitors be from my eyes? OSHA's workstation guidance gives a preferred viewing distance of 50 to 100 cm, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level.
Do I need a monitor arm for two screens? Not strictly, but a dual arm such as the Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side frees desk space, aligns both screens at the same height and lets you set the viewing distance properly.
