16 A Source Redundancy with a C19 Outlet

The APC Rack ATS AP4423 gives single-corded equipment two independent power sources and switches between them automatically. Its 16 A rating and mixed outlet layout - eight IEC C13 plus one IEC C19 - suit a cabinet that mixes ordinary network gear with one heavier device such as a blade chassis, storage shelf or large switch that needs a 16 A C20 connection.

Transfers in 10 ms or Less

When the preferred source drifts outside tolerance the AP4423 transfers the load to the alternate feed in 10 ms maximum on the high sensitivity setting, or 12 ms maximum on low sensitivity. That is short enough for a normal server power supply to ride through without rebooting. Sensitivity and source preference are both set from the front panel.

Designed for 230 V Singapore Racks

Rated at 230 VAC nominal with a ±10% window and 50/60 Hz operation, the AP4423 runs directly on Singapore mains. Feeding one input from a UPS and the other from a separate breaker or riser turns a single-PSU appliance into something that survives the loss of either feed - the same protection a dual-PSU server gets for free.

Built-In Network Management and Load Metering

A network port is standard, not an option. The front LCD shows total load in amps against a green/amber/red meter, the state of both sources, which one is preferred and the active alarm count, and the same information is available remotely over Web, SNMP, Telnet or SSH and through EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert. In a 1U chassis 236 mm deep, it fits comms cabinets and server racks alike.

Compatibility & Load Planning

What you can plug into it. Eight IEC C13 outlets take standard C14 equipment cords - switches, routers, firewalls, appliances, 1U and 2U servers. The single IEC C19 outlet is rated to 16 A and takes a C20 cord, which is what larger blade chassis, storage shelves and big core switches use. There is one C19 on this model, not two; if you need two, step up to the AP4424.

Load planning. Maximum input and output current is 16 A. Schneider does not publish a kW capacity figure for the AP4423, so we do not quote one - plan against the 16 A rating and your equipment's nameplate current. Remember that during a failover a single source carries the whole load, so both feeds and both upstream breakers must be sized for the full 16 A, not half of it.

Rack fit. 1U high, 431.8 mm wide, 236.2 mm deep. The shallow depth suits wall-mount and comms cabinets as well as full-depth racks. The 1U rack-mount bracket kit, screws, cage nuts and clip-on retainers are in the box; front and rear rail segments and a cord retention bracket are not.

Feeding it. Both inlets are IEC C20, so each source needs a C19-to-C20 cord rated for 16 A - do not feed a 16 A unit through a 10 A C13 cord and an adapter. The two sources must be genuinely independent for the redundancy to mean anything: separate UPS units, or separate breakers on separate risers. Both cords into one PDU protects against nothing.

Management. Network management is built in - Web, SNMP, Telnet and SSH, plus EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert. There is no card to buy and no SmartSlot to populate. An EPO input is not documented for this model and we make no claim of one.

Locking Output Cords (Sold Separately)

These are the cords that run from this unit's C13 outlets to your equipment's C14 inlets. The locking design stops a cord being nudged out of its outlet while you work in the rack - a common and entirely avoidable cause of an unplanned reboot. Frequently Asked Questions — APC AP4423

How is a Rack ATS different from a UPS?

A UPS stores energy in a battery and rides through an outage. A Rack ATS has no battery - it selects between two live sources. If both feeds fail together, the AP4423 cannot help. Its value is giving single-PSU equipment the dual-feed resilience that dual-PSU equipment already has, and in most designs at least one of its two inputs comes from a UPS.

What is the transfer time and will equipment ride through it?

10 ms maximum on high sensitivity at 50-60 Hz, 12 ms maximum on low sensitivity. Normal server and network power supplies hold up longer than that, so a transfer is usually invisible to the load. Choose low sensitivity if a noisy or generator-backed source is making the unit transfer more often than you would like.

Does the AP4423 provide surge protection?

No. Schneider's Rack ATS user guide states that the rack ATS does not include power surge protection, and recommends connecting each source to a double-conversion online UPS instead.

Why only one C19 outlet, and what fits it?

The AP4423's layout is eight C13 plus one C19 - Schneider's own product name says so. The C19 is rated to 16 A and accepts a C20 cord, which is what blade chassis, larger storage shelves and some core switches use. If your cabinet has two such devices, the AP4424 has two C19 outlets and a 32 A rating.

Do I need a network management card for it?

No. Network management is built into the AP4423 - Web, SNMP, Telnet and SSH access are standard, along with EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert support. Unlike a Smart-UPS, there is no SmartSlot and no card to purchase.

How does it compare with the AP4421 and AP4424?

Three power classes on the same idea. AP4421: 10 A, C14 inlets, twelve C13, 1U. AP4423 (this listing): 16 A, C20 inlets, eight C13 plus one C19, 1U. AP4424: 32 A, IEC 60309 corded inlets, sixteen C13 plus two C19, and 2U rather than 1U. Pick on total current draw first, then on whether you need C19 outlets.

Is the AP4423 still current?

Schneider records the AP4423 as discontinued, dated 9 June 2023, with AP4423A named as the replacement. SourceIT still stocks the AP4423 and it remains fully usable, but ask us for the current-generation part number if you are specifying for a long-term standard.
