Automatic Source Failover for Single-Corded Equipment
Most switches, routers, appliances and entry-level servers ship with a single power supply, which makes them the weakest link in an otherwise redundant rack. The APC NetShelter Rack ATS AP4421A sits between two independent 230 V feeds and the equipment, transferring the load to the alternate source when the preferred one drifts out of tolerance. Transfer completes in 10 ms or less on the high sensitivity setting, well inside the ride-through of a normal IT power supply.
Built for Singapore's 230 V / 50 Hz Supply
The AP4421A is a 230 V, 50/60 Hz unit that accepts 207 to 253 V, so it works directly on Singapore mains without a step transformer. Pairing one feed from a UPS with a second from a different riser or a second UPS gives a comms cabinet genuine source diversity, which matters during the voltage dips that accompany a heavy afternoon storm on the PUB network. Rated capacity is 2,000 VA at 10 A.
Twelve C13 Outlets in a Single Rack U
Two IEC C14 inlets feed twelve IEC C13 outlets across a 1U chassis just 236 mm deep, so the unit fits shallow comms cabinets as easily as a full-depth server rack. Twelve outlets is enough to cover a stack of switches and appliances from one transfer switch rather than duplicating hardware.
Network Management Card 3, Colour LCD and Sensor Port Built In
The AP4421A is the fifth-generation NetShelter Rack ATS, and the difference from the earlier AP4421 is all in the management. Schneider's Network Management Card 3 is integrated as standard and the NMC/display module can be replaced in the field. It brings a Gigabit Ethernet port, a secure Web UI, SSH, SNMP v1 and v3, Modbus TCP and EcoStruxure IT integration; a colour LCD that cycles through source voltage and frequency, load in amps, alarms and the preferred source; a Universal I/O port for an AP9335T or AP9335TH temperature/humidity sensor; and Link A/B ports that let up to 32 Rack ATS units share one IP address. There is no card to buy separately.

Compatibility & Load Planning
What you can plug into it. Twelve IEC C13 outlets accept any standard IEC C14 equipment cord, which covers essentially all rack-mount switches, routers, firewalls, NAS appliances and 1U servers. There are no C19 outlets on this model, so a device needing a 16 A C20 inlet - a large blade chassis or a high-draw storage shelf - needs the AP4423A or AP4424A instead.
Load planning. The AP4421A is rated at 10 A and 2,000 VA. Size the connected load against that ceiling rather than the outlet count - twelve outlets does not mean twelve full-draw servers. Work from the nameplate current of your equipment and leave headroom for inrush at power-on. Both feeds must be capable of carrying the entire load on their own, because in a failover one of them will. The unit has no internal circuit breaker; Schneider's datasheet asks for 16 A facility branch protection upstream of each source.
Rack fit. 1U high, 431.8 mm wide and only 236.2 mm deep, so it mounts in shallow wall-mount comms cabinets as well as full-depth server racks. The 1U rack-mount bracket kit, screws, cage nuts and clip-on nuts are supplied in the box. Front and rear rail segments and a cord retention bracket are not included.
Feeding it. Both inlets are IEC C14, so each source needs a C13-to-C14 cord - tell us and we will quote a pair of input cords with the unit. For the redundancy to be real the two sources must be genuinely independent: two separate UPS units, or one UPS feed and one direct mains feed on a different breaker. Two cords into the same PDU on the same breaker gives you no protection at all.
Management. The AP4421A carries Schneider's Network Management Card 3 as standard - there is no SmartSlot to populate and no card to buy. You get a Gigabit Ethernet port, a secure Web UI over HTTP/HTTPS, a CLI over SSH, SNMP v1 and v3 with traps, Modbus TCP for a building management system, Syslog and e-mail alerts, and EcoStruxure IT integration. The NMC/display module can be swapped in the field, so a damaged card is a spare-part exchange rather than a whole-unit return. The micro-USB console cable is not in the box.
Environmental monitoring. The Universal I/O port accepts the optional AP9335T temperature sensor or the AP9335TH temperature and humidity sensor, so a comms cabinet with no other monitoring can report rack temperature through the same IP address as its power switching. Thresholds and alarms are set in the same Web UI.
Many units, one IP. With Link A and Link B on the front panel, up to 32 AP44XXA-series Rack ATS units can be chained so that one network connection serves them all. One unit is the host; the rest appear under it in the Web UI and in SNMP.

The locking design stops a cord being nudged out of its outlet while you work in the rack - a common and entirely avoidable cause of an unplanned reboot. Frequently Asked Questions — APC AP4421A
What does a Rack ATS actually do, and how is it different from a UPS?
A Rack ATS switches between two power sources; a UPS stores energy. The AP4421A has no battery and cannot ride through an outage that hits both feeds at once - if Source A and Source B both fail, the load drops. Its job is to give single-corded equipment the same dual-feed resilience that dual-PSU equipment already has. In a well-designed rack the ATS sits downstream of a UPS on at least one of its two inputs.
Does the AP4421A have surge protection?
No. Schneider states this plainly in the AP44XXA user guide (990-91718): the Rack ATS does not include power surge protection, and it recommends connecting each Rack ATS source to a double-conversion on-line UPS. Claims of surge suppression against this part are incorrect. If surge and dip protection is what you actually need, an on-line UPS such as the Smart-UPS SRT range in front of the ATS is the right answer, and it also gives the ATS a genuinely independent second source.
Is network management built in, or do I need to buy a card?
Built in. The AP4421A ships with Network Management Card 3 integrated - Gigabit Ethernet, Web UI over HTTP/HTTPS, SSH, SNMP v1 and v3, Modbus TCP and EcoStruxure IT support are all standard. You do not buy a card for it. If the module is ever damaged it can be replaced in the field rather than sending the whole switch away.
Can it monitor rack temperature and humidity?
Yes, with an optional sensor. Plug an AP9335T (temperature) or AP9335TH (temperature and humidity) into the Universal I/O port and the readings, thresholds and alarms appear in the same Web UI and SNMP tree as the power data. No NetBotz appliance is needed for a single-cabinet site.
What does "manage up to 32 ATS from one IP address" mean in practice?
Each AP44XXA-series unit has Link A and Link B ports. Chain up to 32 units through those ports, connect only the host unit to your network, and every unit in the group is visible and configurable through that one IP address. It saves a switch port and an address per cabinet and keeps the whole estate under one login.
How fast does it transfer, and will my servers notice?
A maximum of 10 ms on the high sensitivity setting, 12 ms on low sensitivity, with Schneider quoting a typical total transfer of 8 to 12 ms. That is inside the hold-up time of a normal server or network power supply, so equipment generally rides through without restarting. High sensitivity reacts sooner to a marginal source; low sensitivity tolerates more deviation before acting, which is useful when a generator feed would otherwise make the unit transfer more often than you want. The two sources may be up to 180 degrees out of phase.
How does the AP4421A differ from the AP4421 it replaces?
The electrical side is unchanged: same 10 A, 230 V rating, same inlet type and the same outlet configuration, so the AP4421A drops into an existing AP4421 installation without rewiring. What Schneider changed is the management module. The AP4421A moves from Network Management Card 2 to Network Management Card 3, and that card and its display are now field-replaceable. It adds a Universal I/O port for an AP9335T or AP9335TH sensor, Link A and Link B ports for Network Port Sharing of up to 32 units on one IP address, Gigabit Ethernet in place of 10/100, a colour LCD, a micro-USB console port instead of the old RJ12 serial lead, a USB-A port for firmware upgrade and the AP9834 Wi-Fi device, Modbus TCP, updated security (secured interfaces and a stricter password policy) and EcoStruxure IT integration. The standard warranty stays at 2 years.
How does it compare with the AP4423A?
Same chassis, same NMC3 management, different power class. The AP4421A is 10 A and 2,000 VA with C14 inlets and twelve C13 outlets. The AP4423A is 16 A and 3,700 VA with C20 inlets and trades four C13 outlets for a C19 - eight C13 plus one C19 - to serve a single higher-draw device. If everything in the cabinet is C14-corded and the total draw is under 10 A, the AP4421A is the correct choice. Note that the 32 A AP4424A is 2U, not 1U, so do not budget rack space for one and order the other.
