Automatic Source Failover for Single-Corded Equipment

Most switches, routers, appliances and entry-level servers ship with a single power supply, which makes them the weakest link in an otherwise redundant rack. The APC Rack ATS AP4421 sits between two independent 230 V feeds and the equipment, transferring the load to the alternate source when the preferred one drifts out of tolerance. Transfer completes in 10 ms or less on the high sensitivity setting, well inside the ride-through of a normal IT power supply.

Built for Singapore's 230 V / 50 Hz Supply

The AP4421 is a 230 V, 50/60 Hz unit that accepts ±10% of nominal, so it works directly on Singapore mains without a step transformer. Pairing one feed from a UPS with a second from a different riser or a second UPS gives a comms cabinet genuine source diversity, which matters during the voltage dips that accompany a heavy afternoon storm on the PUB network.

Twelve C13 Outlets in a Single Rack U

Two IEC C14 inlets feed twelve IEC C13 outlets across a 1U chassis just 236 mm deep, so the unit fits shallow comms cabinets as easily as a full-depth server rack. Twelve outlets is enough to cover a stack of switches and appliances from one transfer switch rather than duplicating hardware.

Network Management and Local Metering Are Built In

Unlike a plain transfer switch, the AP4421 has a network port as standard. The onboard LCD cycles through total load in amps with a green/amber/red bar, the state of each source, which source is preferred and the current alarm count, while Web, SNMP, Telnet and SSH access lets you see the same information and change the preference from your desk. There is no card to buy separately.

Compatibility & Load Planning

What you can plug into it. Twelve IEC C13 outlets accept any standard IEC C14 equipment cord, which covers essentially all rack-mount switches, routers, firewalls, NAS appliances and 1U servers. There are no C19 outlets on this model, so a device needing a 16 A C20 inlet - a large blade chassis or a high-draw storage shelf - needs the AP4423 or AP4424 instead.

Load planning. The AP4421 is rated at 10 A maximum input and output current. Size the connected load against that 10 A ceiling rather than the outlet count - twelve outlets does not mean twelve full-draw servers. Schneider does not publish a kW figure for this model, so we do not quote one; work from the 10 A rating and the nameplate current of your equipment, and leave headroom for inrush at power-on. Both feeds must be capable of carrying the entire load on their own, because in a failover one of them will.

Rack fit. 1U high, 431.8 mm wide and only 236.2 mm deep, so it mounts in shallow wall-mount comms cabinets as well as full-depth server racks. The 1U rack-mount bracket kit, screws, cage nuts and clip-on retainers are supplied in the box. Front and rear rail segments and a cord retention bracket are not included.

Feeding it. Both inlets are IEC C14, so each source needs a C13-to-C14 cord, which is not supplied with this model - tell us and we will quote a pair of input cords with the unit. For the redundancy to be real the two sources must be genuinely independent: two separate UPS units, or one UPS feed and one direct mains feed on a different breaker. Two cords into the same PDU on the same breaker gives you no protection at all. Schneider recommends 16 A branch circuit protection upstream.

Management. Network management is built in - Web, SNMPv1/v3, Telnet and SSH - and the unit reports into EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert. No SmartSlot card is required or fitted. An emergency power off (EPO) input is not documented for this model and we do not claim one.

Locking Output Cords (Sold Separately)

These are the cords that run from this unit's C13 outlets to your equipment's C14 inlets. The locking design stops a cord being nudged out of its outlet while you work in the rack - a common and entirely avoidable cause of an unplanned reboot. Frequently Asked Questions — APC AP4421

What does a Rack ATS actually do, and how is it different from a UPS?

A Rack ATS switches between two power sources; a UPS stores energy. The AP4421 has no battery and cannot ride through an outage that hits both feeds at once - if Source A and Source B both fail, the load drops. Its job is to give single-corded equipment the same dual-feed resilience that dual-PSU equipment already has. In a well-designed rack the ATS sits downstream of a UPS on at least one of its two inputs.

How fast does it transfer, and will my servers notice?

10 ms maximum on the high sensitivity setting at 50-60 Hz, or 12 ms maximum on low sensitivity. That is inside the hold-up time of a normal ATX or server power supply, so equipment generally rides through the transfer without restarting. High sensitivity transfers sooner on a marginal source; low sensitivity tolerates more deviation before acting, which is useful if a generator feed makes the unit transfer more often than you want.

Does the AP4421 have surge protection?

No. Schneider states this plainly in the Rack ATS user guide: the rack ATS does not include power surge protection, and APC recommends connecting each ATS source to a double-conversion online UPS for that. Claims of surge suppression against this part are incorrect. If surge and dip protection is what you actually need, an online UPS such as the Smart-UPS SRT range is the right product.

Is network management built in, or do I need to buy a card?

Built in. The AP4421 ships with a network port and supports Web, SNMPv1/v3, Telnet and SSH access, plus EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert. You do not need to buy a Network Management Card for it. That is a genuine difference from a Smart-UPS, where the card is often a separate purchase.

How many rack units does it take, and how deep is it?

1U high and only 236.2 mm deep, which is shallow enough for a wall-mount comms cabinet. The 1U mounting bracket kit is in the box. Note that its 32 A sibling, the AP4424, is 2U - not 1U - so do not budget rack space for one and order the other.

How does it compare with the AP4423?

Same chassis, same transfer behaviour, different power class. The AP4421 is 10 A with C14 inlets and twelve C13 outlets. The AP4423 is 16 A with C20 inlets and trades four C13 outlets for a C19 - eight C13 plus one C19 - to serve a single higher-draw device. If everything in the cabinet is C14-corded and the total draw is under 10 A, the AP4421 is the cheaper and correct choice.

Is the AP4421 still a current product?

Schneider records the AP4421 as discontinued, dated 27 June 2024, with AP4421A named as the replacement. SourceIT still holds stock of the AP4421 and it is fully supported, but if you are standardising on a model for a multi-year rollout, ask us to quote the current generation as well.
