What you can plug into it. Twenty-one IEC C13 outlets for C14-corded servers, switches and appliances, and three IEC C19 outlets for C20-corded storage shelves, blade chassis and core switches. The hybrid outlets also accept C15 and C21 plugs, and the locking feature works with APC locking cords.

Load planning. 32 A input and 7,400 VA total. The PDU meters its load and shows it on the LCD and over the network, and you can set alarm thresholds so it warns you before a bank is overloaded. Twenty-four outlets on 7.4 kW is modest per-outlet draw; the outlets are there for reach, not so each can pull its maximum. For per-outlet energy data, the 2G AP8653 is the alternative at the same rating.

Feeding it. A captive 3 m IEC 60309 32 A commando cord. The rack needs a matching 32 A socket on a dedicated circuit. If the site only has 16 A supplies, the APDU9959EU3 is the same 9000-series strip at 16 A with a C20 inlet and a locking IEC 60309 16 A cord.

Rack fit. A 0U strip 1,829 mm long, 56 mm wide and 46 mm deep, weighing 7.34 kg - a full-height unit for a 42U enclosure with a rear vertical channel. It mounts toolless and consumes no rack units. In a short cabinet the 1U switched AP7921B (16 A, eight C13) is the compact alternative.

Management and sensors. Gigabit Ethernet on the NMC3 platform with Web, SNMP and SSH, reporting into EcoStruxure IT, plus Network Port Sharing so a row of 9000-series strips can share one uplink. The universal I/O port takes an APC environmental sensor; ask us to confirm the right sensor part for the 9000 series when you order. The AP9640 and AP9641 cards we sell are Smart-UPS accessories and are not used with this PDU.

What it does not do. No surge protection and no battery - a switched PDU controls power, it does not condition or store it, so a UPS upstream is still required. It is not metered per outlet; that is the AP8653.

Locking Output Cords (Sold Separately)

These are the cords that run from this unit's C13 outlets to your equipment's C14 inlets. The locking design stops a cord being nudged out of its outlet while you work in the rack - a common and entirely avoidable cause of an unplanned reboot. Note that this is an output cord kit, not this unit's supply cord - if you also need an input cord, tell us and we will quote the right type for this model.

What is different about the 9000 series compared with the older switched PDUs?

The management platform and the chassis. The 9000 series runs on the NMC3 architecture with a Gigabit Ethernet port, has an LCD with buttons, a USB port, a universal sensor port and Network Port Sharing across a group of strips, and its outlets are hybrid C13/C15 and C19/C21 with a locking feature and a status LED each. The switching, sequencing and alarm functions are the same idea as before, done on newer hardware.

Is it metered per outlet?

No. The APDU9953 meters the PDU load - current, power and voltage - and switches every outlet individually, but it does not report energy per outlet. If per-outlet metering is the requirement, the 2G AP8653 provides it at the same 32 A rating and outlet count.

What supply does it need?

A 32 A IEC 60309 commando socket on a dedicated circuit. The 3 m cord is attached, so there is nothing to buy, but the socket is a fixed electrical installation - budget for an electrician if one is not already in the rack.

What is Network Port Sharing?

A way of managing several 9000-series Rack PDUs through one network connection. The strips are cabled together through their Link A and Link B ports and appear under the one management interface, which saves switch ports and IP addresses in a row of racks.

Can I add a temperature and humidity sensor?

Yes - the 9000 series has a universal I/O port for APC environmental sensors. Ask us to confirm the right sensor part number for the 9000 series when you order.

Does it have surge protection?

No. Schneider's specification sheet for the APDU9953 has no surge section, joule rating or clamping figure. Surge and sag protection belongs at a UPS upstream.

Do I need a network management card?

No. Network management is built into the strip on the NMC3 platform, with a one-year Secure Network Management Card subscription included. The AP9640 and AP9641 cards are Smart-UPS accessories and are not used with this PDU.

How does it compare with the APDU9959EU3?

Same 9000-series platform and the same twenty-one C13 and three C19 outlets. The APDU9953 is 32 A and 7.4 kW on a captive IEC 60309 32 A cord and is 1,829 mm long; the APDU9959EU3 is 16 A and 3.7 kW with a C20 inlet and a supplied locking IEC 60309 16 A cord, and is 1,794 mm long. Choose on the supply you have in the rack.
