Your Next IT Upgrade Could Be a Downgrade. Here's Why.

A newer computer is not automatically a better computer for your business. The latest models often trade away things offices rely on, such as upgradeable memory, the right ports and mature drivers, in exchange for things the spec sheet loves and the user never notices. Upgrade for a reason you can name, not because a model number went up.

This is a balanced look at where a 2026 upgrade can go backwards: soldered memory, fewer ports and the dongle tax, Windows on Arm compatibility, first-batch drivers and firmware, battery life versus performance, and "spec-sheet upgrades" that do not help office work. We also make the case for upgrading, because sometimes staying put is the real downgrade. Store examples include the ASUS Ascent QN10, ASUS NUC 16 Pro and ASUS ExpertBook B1.

Where a newer PC can be a step backwards

Possible downgrade What to check before buying Store example (23 Oct 2026)
Soldered memory Buy the RAM you will need for the whole life of the machine ASUS Ascent QN10: 32GB soldered, S$2,375
Upgradeable memory kept Removable SO-DIMM slots allow a later upgrade ASUS NUC 16 Pro Ultra 5 325: DDR5 SO-DIMM, S$1,955 (available to order)
Fewer ports Count USB-A, HDMI and Ethernet needs per desk Targus USB-C dock S$101.04; ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock S$360
Windows on Arm Drivers, VPN, security agents, printers, legacy apps ASUS Ascent QN10 (Snapdragon X2 Elite)
First-batch drivers and firmware Pilot a few units before rolling out a fleet Any newly launched model
Spec-sheet upgrades Will the user notice it in daily work? ASUS ExpertBook B1 for office roles, S$1,499

Prices are as listed on 23 Oct 2026.

Is soldered RAM a downgrade?

It can be, if you buy too little. Many thin laptops and compact AI PCs now solder memory to the board for speed and efficiency, which means the amount you buy is the amount you keep. The ASUS Ascent QN10 (S$2,375) lists its 32 GB LPDDR5x as "onboard (non-removable, non-upgradable)". Even within one product line the answer changes: the ASUS NUC 16 Pro Ultra 5 325 (S$1,955) uses removable DDR5 SO-DIMM modules, while its listing notes that the newer Core Ultra X7 and X9 tier has memory "soldered directly to the board as LPDDR5x". Soldered memory is not bad in itself; the downgrade is buying a soldered 16 GB machine for a role that will need more in two years. Our five checks before buying a laptop covers this.

Are fewer ports really a problem?

For an office, yes, unless you plan for it. Slimmer laptops often drop full-size USB-A, HDMI or Ethernet in favour of USB-C, and the cost moves into adapters that go missing. We call it the dongle tax. The fix is a dock standard rather than a drawer of adapters: the Targus USB-C 4K HDMI/VGA Docking Station with 100W (S$101.04) for simple desks, the Lenovo ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock (S$300) for mixed fleets, or the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock (S$360). Budget the dock in the same quotation as the laptop, as Why the Cheapest IT Quotation Isn't Always the Best Deal explains.

Will my software run on Windows on Arm?

Most of it, but check the exceptions first. Microsoft says Prism, the emulator in Windows 11 24H2, lets "the rich ecosystem of Windows apps" run on Arm "without any modifications to the app", and that "Windows 11 on Arm supports emulation of both x86 and x64 apps". The same page states the limit clearly: "emulation only supports user mode code and doesn't support drivers. Any kernel mode components must be compiled as Arm64." That is why VPN clients, endpoint security agents, printer and scanner drivers and older line-of-business tools are the items to test. The QN10 listing makes the same point. A Snapdragon machine can be an excellent upgrade, but only after those checks; we discuss where Arm-based AI PCs fit in AI PCs Are Everywhere. But What Can They Actually Do?

Why do brand-new models sometimes cause problems?

Because drivers, BIOS and firmware keep improving for months after launch. In our experience, the first batch of a new platform is where docks, displays, sleep and wake, and management tools are most likely to need an update. That does not mean avoiding new models. It means piloting a few units with your own image, apps and docks before rolling out to a whole department, and updating firmware before deployment. Before You Buy 50 Office Laptops, Read This sets out a fleet checklist.

Battery life or performance?

Often you cannot have the maximum of both. A laptop tuned for peak performance draws more power under load, and a thin chassis has less room for battery and cooling. For staff who work at a desk on a dock all day, that is fine. For staff in meetings, at client sites or on the move, an efficient processor with a sensible battery is the better upgrade, even if its benchmark score is lower.

What are "spec-sheet upgrades"?

Features that look impressive in a comparison but do nothing for an office worker: a top-tier processor for email and spreadsheets, a 4K laptop panel used at default scaling, an NPU whose features are disabled by policy, or a Wi-Fi 7 laptop connecting to a Wi-Fi 6 access point. On that NPU point, Microsoft's IT documentation says "by default, Recall is disabled and removed on managed devices". On Wi-Fi, see Is Wi-Fi 7 Worth the Upgrade, or Just Marketing Hype? For many office roles, a mainstream machine such as the ASUS ExpertBook B1 B1403CVA-NJ1209X (S$1,499; 10% off with code EXPERTBOOK10 until 30 November 2026) does the job, and the difference buys monitors and headsets. 7 IT Products Companies Keep Overpaying For lists more.

The case for upgrading anyway

Holding on too long is a downgrade too. Microsoft says "support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025", and that it "no longer provides software updates, security fixes, or technical assistance to Windows 10 PCs". Older machines also fall out of warranty, take longer to repair and use more power for the same work. If a PC cannot run Windows 11, replacing it is a security decision, not a luxury. If it can, an SSD or memory upgrade may be enough; see Think Your Office PC Is Slow?

SourceIT's verdict

The best upgrade is the one that fixes a problem your staff actually have, and the worst is the one that creates three new ones you did not test for.

Upgrade with a reason, buy memory for the machine's whole life, standardise docks, test Arm and first-batch models with a pilot, and spend on what people use all day. That is also why the office PC is changing shape rather than dying, as we argue in Is the Traditional Office PC Finally Dying?, and why a compact machine may be all you need, as covered in Can a S$2,000 Mini PC Really Replace a Traditional Desktop?

Frequently asked questions

Is soldered RAM bad? No, but it cannot be upgraded later, so buy the capacity the role will need for the life of the machine.

Do Windows apps run on Arm laptops and mini PCs? Most do, natively or through Prism emulation. Microsoft says emulation does not support drivers, so test VPN, security agents, printers and older business software first.

Should I avoid newly launched laptops? Not necessarily. Pilot a few units with your own image, apps and docks, and update drivers and firmware before deploying a fleet.

How do I deal with laptops that have fewer ports? Standardise on one USB-C or Thunderbolt dock per desk rather than loose adapters, and include it in the quotation.

Is it still safe to keep Windows 10 PCs? Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025 and no longer provides security fixes, so plan to upgrade or replace them.

What upgrades are usually not worth it for office staff? Top-tier processors for email users, 4K laptop panels at default scaling and features that IT policy will disable anyway.
