Don't Buy a New Laptop Until You Check These 5 Things
Before you buy a new laptop, check five things: the processor class and generation, whether the RAM can be upgraded or is soldered, the SSD size, the warranty terms, and the ports, weight and battery. Those five decide whether a laptop lasts four years or feels slow in eighteen months, and none of them shows up in a headline price. Below, each check is explained with four business laptops from the store as worked examples: the ASUS ExpertBook B1 (B1403CVA), ASUS ExpertBook P3 14" (P3406CCA), ASUS ExpertBook PM3 (PM3406CHA) and ASUS ExpertBook P3 16" (P3606CCA).

Specifications are from each SourceIT listing, with processor launch dates and NPU ratings from Intel and AMD. Prices are as listed on 23 Oct 2026; all four were in stock at the time of writing.
Check 1: Which processor class and generation is it?
The model number tells you more than the "Core 7" or "Ryzen 7" badge. On Intel, a U suffix marks a low-power chip and an H suffix a higher-performance one: the Core 7 150U in the ExpertBook B1 B1403CVA-NJ1209X has 10 cores and 12 threads, while the Core Ultra 7 255H in the ExpertBook P3 P3406CCA-LY0040X has 16 cores. Check the launch date on the maker's specification page too; Intel lists the 150U as Q1 2024 and the 255H as Q1 2025, so a "new" laptop can carry a chip that is a year or more older than its neighbour.
Then check the NPU. The 255H has an Intel AI Boost NPU rated at 13 TOPS and the Ryzen 7 8840HS has an AMD XDNA NPU rated at up to 16 TOPS; the 150U has none. Microsoft says many new Windows AI features "require an NPU with the ability to run at 40+ TOPS", so none of these is a Copilot+ PC, though the NPU still handles features such as Windows Studio Effects. For Microsoft 365, Teams and a browser, the B1 is enough; for heavy spreadsheets, data and constant video calls, the P3 earns its price.
Check 2: Can the RAM be upgraded, or is it soldered?
Buy 16 GB today, and make sure you can add more later. Many thin laptops use soldered memory, which means the amount you buy is the amount you keep for the life of the machine. All four ExpertBooks here use DDR5 SO-DIMM modules across two slots, and ASUS lists up to 96 GB for the P3 platforms, so a user who outgrows 16 GB can be upgraded instead of replaced. Look for "SO-DIMM" or "slots" in the specification; "onboard" or "LPDDR" usually means soldered. When a slow PC can be fixed with memory rather than a new purchase, Think Your Office PC Is Slow? It Might Not Need Replacing walks through the checks.
Check 3: Is the SSD big enough for four years?
Windows 11's minimum is a 64 GB storage device, but that is a floor for installation, not a working size. For a business laptop holding Microsoft 365, synced OneDrive or SharePoint folders and a few years of updates, 512 GB is a sensible minimum, and 1 TB suits anyone who keeps large files locally. The ExpertBook PM3 PM3406CHA-LY0120X ships with 1 TB at S$1,740, which makes it the value pick for storage. All four models also have a spare M.2 2230 slot, so a second drive can be added later; that is worth more than it sounds, because a laptop with one soldered or single-slot drive can only be expanded by replacing it.
Check 4: What does the warranty actually cover?
Read three things: the length, the service type and where it is honoured. Onsite means an engineer comes to you; carry-in means you take the laptop to a service centre and wait. Local warranty is honoured by the manufacturer's Singapore service network, while a unit bought abroad or through a parallel importer may only carry international or seller-backed cover. All four ExpertBooks here state 3 years onsite service, next business day, with the battery covered for the same 3 years. Watch Out for These Red Flags shows how to spot laptops without local cover. Our manufacturer warranty and DOA page explains how claims are handled.
Check 5: Do the ports, weight and battery fit how you work?
Count the things you plug in every day. A built-in RJ45 Ethernet port and full-size HDMI save dongles in offices and classrooms; all four have both. If you dock at a desk, Thunderbolt 4 (P3 14" and 16") or USB4 (PM3) gives a single-cable connection to faster docks, while the B1's two USB-C ports with power delivery suit a standard USB-C dock. Then weigh the laptop against how often it travels: the 14" models sit between 1.40 kg and 1.49 kg, while the ExpertBook P3 16" P3606CCA-MB0380X (S$2,104.80) is 1.77 kg but adds a numeric keypad that finance and data-entry staff will use all day. Battery capacity is 42 Wh on the B1 and 50 Wh on the others; compare watt-hours rather than the hours quoted in marketing, which depend on test conditions.
Which of the four should you buy?
For most office users, the ExpertBook B1 at S$1,499 passes all five checks. Step up to the P3 14" for heavier multitasking and Thunderbolt docking, the PM3 for 1 TB of storage at a lower price, or the P3 16" for a bigger screen and numeric keypad. Until 30 November 2026, code EXPERTBOOK10 takes 10% off the B1 and P3 14" (one use per customer); the full comparison and terms are in ASUS ExpertBook B1 vs P3: in stock with 10% off. Frequently asked questions
What should I check before buying a laptop? The processor class and generation, whether the RAM is upgradeable, the SSD size, the warranty type and length, and the ports, weight and battery.
How can I tell if laptop RAM is soldered? Look for "SO-DIMM" and a slot count in the specification. "Onboard" or "LPDDR" memory usually means it is soldered and cannot be upgraded.
Is 512 GB SSD enough for a business laptop? For most office users, yes. Choose 1 TB if you keep large files locally; the ExpertBook PM3 ships with 1 TB.
What is the difference between onsite and carry-in warranty? Onsite means an engineer attends your premises; carry-in means you bring the laptop to a service centre. The four ExpertBooks here carry 3 years onsite, next business day.
Are these ExpertBooks Copilot+ PCs? No. Microsoft's Copilot+ features need an NPU of 40+ TOPS; the Core Ultra 7 255H NPU is rated at 13 TOPS and the Ryzen 7 8840HS NPU at up to 16 TOPS.
Is there a discount on the ExpertBook B1 or P3? Yes. Code EXPERTBOOK10 gives 10% off the ExpertBook B1 and P3 14" until 30 November 2026, one use per customer.
