What Schneider states. Its support FAQ for this part reads: "All SURT/SRT models 3Kva or larger", and adds that "this RBC kit replaced the older RBC44. APCRBC140 can be used in SRT or SURT unit, RBC44 only work in SURT". Its safety documentation separately describes the APCRBC140 as the 192 V battery cartridge for Smart-UPS On-Line systems of 5 kVA to 20 kVA, naming SRT and SURT 5K to 10K units among others. The two statements differ on the lower bound, so treat 192 V — the battery bus voltage — as the deciding characteristic and confirm your model with us.

Electrical fit. Schneider rates this cartridge at 192 V DC, 5.1 Ah, supplied as two battery modules. The 34.55 kg net weight is consistent with a 192 V string, so the published voltage is the cartridge voltage and not a per-block figure. A UPS will only accept the cartridge built for it.

Runtime after replacement. A new cartridge restores the runtime the UPS was rated for when new; it does not add runtime beyond that. How long that actually is depends entirely on how heavily the UPS is loaded — a unit at a quarter load runs for considerably longer than the same unit near its rated output. Schneider does not publish runtime figures against the cartridge itself, only against the UPS, so if you need a runtime target for a specific rack load, send us the load in watts and the UPS model and we will size it properly rather than quote a number that will not hold.

Installation. The cartridge is supplied assembled with its connectors fitted. Schneider's own safety notice for this part describes the APCRBC140 as user serviceable and hot swappable; even so, follow the installation guide supplied in the box for the correct sequence on your model, and treat the modules as live throughout — this is a 192 V lead-acid assembly and a shorted terminal is a serious hazard. Which APC UPS models does the APCRBC140 fit?

Schneider's support FAQ states "all SURT/SRT models 3Kva or larger", while its safety documentation describes the part as the 192 V cartridge for Smart-UPS On-Line systems of 5 kVA to 20 kVA and names SRT and SURT 5K to 10K units. The reliable test is the battery bus voltage: this cartridge is 192 V. Send us the model number from your unit and we will confirm it in writing before anything ships.

Does the APCRBC140 replace the older RBC44?

Yes. Schneider states that this cartridge kit replaced the RBC44, and that where the RBC44 worked only in SURT units, the APCRBC140 can be used in either SRT or SURT systems. If you are maintaining a mixed installed base of older SURT and newer SRT machines, that means one cartridge number to stock rather than two.

Is my APCRBC140 affected by the Schneider safety notice?

Only a specific manufacturing window is. Schneider's product recall safety notice PRB-239058 covers cartridges manufactured between 6 May 2019 and 10 May 2020, identified by UPS serial date codes AS1919-AS2019, AQ1919-AQ2019 and 7S1919-7S2019, and battery module date codes 7A1919-7A2019 carrying labels BM13170, BR8376, BR8529, BM13756, BR8856 or MU1457. Schneider's stated hazard is that "battery issues caused by an internal battery nonconformance may affect the battery performance and, in a very low number of cases, result in localized overheating", and its stated remedy is that affected batteries need to be replaced and will be provided. The affected manufacturing window closed in May 2020, so this is an installed-base question rather than one about a cartridge bought new today — but if you are servicing an older system, read the date codes off the modules before you refit them. The notice is linked in the downloads section, and we are happy to check a date code for you.

How do I make sure I am ordering the right cartridge?

Read the model number off the label on the rear or side of the UPS and select against that, never against the part number of the battery already inside it and never against the VA rating alone. Schneider says the same thing on its APC UPS Replacement Battery Cartridge Selector Tool: two units of identical capacity in tower and rack form take different cartridges, and a SmartConnect or network-card build often differs from the standard build of the same model. Send us the model number and we will confirm the correct cartridge in writing before you order.

Can I fit the cartridge myself?

Schneider's own safety notice describes the APCRBC140 as user serviceable and hot swappable, so on a supported system the modules can be changed without dropping the load. In practice, follow the installation guide supplied in the box for the correct sequence on your model rather than assuming, treat the modules as live throughout — this is a 192 V lead-acid assembly — and plan for a two-person lift at 34.55 kg across the two modules. How long should the cartridge last?

Schneider does not publish a service-life figure against this part number. Its general guidance for sealed lead-acid cartridges is three to five years, and on a Smart-UPS On-Line system the UPS itself will report battery health, so use that alongside age. In Singapore, the room temperature is the real variable: a comms room that runs warm will take years off a battery string that would otherwise reach the top of that range.

What do I do with the old cartridge?

Do not put it in general waste. A UPS cartridge is a sealed lead-acid assembly and is regulated waste in Singapore. Schneider supplies battery recycling information with the cartridge, and SourceIT can look at arranging collection of the exhausted pack for proper recycling when the replacement is delivered — tell us when you order so it can be scheduled with the delivery.

Is this a genuine APC part, and what does the warranty cover?

Yes.
