Why Your S$200 Router Isn't a Replacement for a Business Firewall
Because a consumer router is built to share one internet connection safely in a home, and a business firewall is built to control, inspect and record how many people and devices use it at work. Modern home routers do include security features, some of them good: TP-Link's HomeShield and ASUS's AiProtection offer intrusion prevention and malicious-site blocking. What they lack is what an office needs: per-user and per-department policies, separate networks for staff, guests, servers and CCTV, VPN access for remote staff with MFA, application control, SSL inspection, logs you can keep, and a support and patch lifecycle aimed at businesses. Speed is rarely the issue. At SourceIT, the entry-level Fortinet FortiGate 30G costs S$1,236 with a year of Unified Threat Protection (UTP), and the FortiGate 50G S$1,819.20 (listed 30 Oct 2026).
Consumer router vs business firewall
| Capability | Typical consumer router | Business firewall (FortiGate) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic firewall and NAT | Yes | Yes |
| Threat protection | Home-grade IPS and site blocking on some models, sometimes a paid add-on | IPS, antivirus, sandbox, web and DNS filtering from FortiGuard |
| Separate networks (VLANs) | Usually just a guest Wi-Fi | Many zones: staff, guests, servers, CCTV, printers, with policies between them |
| Per-user or per-group rules | By device, mostly for parental controls | By user or group from Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID |
| Remote access for staff | Rare, or basic | IPsec VPN with MFA |
| Application control, including AI tools | No | Yes |
| SSL/TLS inspection | No | Yes |
| Logs and reports | A short local history | Detailed logs, kept locally or in FortiAnalyzer |
| Two internet lines with failover | Rare | SD-WAN |
| Central switch and Wi-Fi management | Mesh Wi-Fi only | FortiSwitch and FortiAP managed from the firewall |
| Support | Consumer helpdesk, firmware as long as the vendor chooses | FortiCare Premium 24x7 support with FortiGuard bundles, published advisories |

Why does multi-user matter so much?
A home has a few people who trust each other. An office has staff with different roles, visitors, contractors, devices nobody manages and data that must stay with certain people. A router that puts everything on one flat network means a single infected laptop can reach the accounts PC, the file server and the CCTV recorder. Separate networks with rules between them are the single biggest improvement most small offices can make, and they need a firewall that does segmentation properly. See Should Companies Ban Personal Laptops From Their Office Network?
A home router asks "is this device allowed online?" A business firewall asks "who is this, what are they reaching, and should they be?"
Isn't the router's built-in security enough?
For a home, often yes. For a business, three gaps remain. First, inspection: without SSL inspection and current signatures, most web traffic passes unchecked. Second, accountability: if personal data is exposed, the PDPA expects you to show what protections were in place, and a router with no logs makes that hard. Third, the lifecycle: consumer routers get firmware updates for as long as the vendor decides, and fixes are rarely announced with the detail a business needs. Singapore's Cyber Security Agency's Cyber Essentials standard asks for a perimeter firewall that accepts only authorised traffic, which a well-managed business firewall makes straightforward.
Is it about speed?
Not usually. A good consumer router can route a gigabit fibre line quickly. The question is how fast it can inspect, and most routers do not publish that figure. A business firewall publishes it: Fortinet's October 2026 matrix lists threat protection throughput of 500 Mbps for the FortiGate 30G and 1.1 Gbps for the 50G. The full feature comparison is in FortiGate vs Traditional Firewall. Wi-Fi is a separate question too; see Why the Most Expensive Router Doesn't Guarantee Better Wi-Fi.
When is a consumer router acceptable?
- A one- or two-person business with no customer personal data and no on-site servers.
- A home office where company access is through cloud apps with MFA and managed laptops.
- Behind a business firewall, used only as a Wi-Fi access point.
Once there are staff, customer data, CCTV, a file server, remote workers or a second site, a business firewall is the better tool.
What does a typical small-office setup look like?
- A FortiGate 30G or 50G with UTP at the internet edge.
- A FortiSwitch 108F (S$574.80) for wired desks, cameras and printers on separate VLANs.
- A FortiAP 231K Wi-Fi 7 access point (S$783.60) with separate staff and guest networks.
- IPsec VPN with MFA for remote staff.
- Endpoint protection on every PC and an isolated backup.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a home router for my office? For a one- or two-person business using cloud apps, possibly. Once there are staff, customer data, servers or remote workers, a business firewall provides the segmentation, inspection, VPN and logging an office needs.
Do consumer routers have security features? Some do. TP-Link HomeShield and ASUS AiProtection offer intrusion prevention and malicious-site blocking aimed at homes, but not per-user policies, SSL inspection or business-grade logging.
What does a business firewall do that a router doesn't? It separates the network into zones, applies rules by user and application, inspects traffic including encrypted traffic, provides VPN with MFA and keeps detailed logs.
Is a business firewall faster than a router? Not necessarily for plain routing. The difference is inspection throughput: Fortinet lists 1.1 Gbps threat protection for the FortiGate 50G.
What is the cheapest FortiGate at SourceIT? On 30 Oct 2026, the FortiGate 30G is S$766.80 hardware only or S$1,236 with 1-year Unified Threat Protection.
