The Hidden Costs of Owning an AI Workstation Nobody Talks About

The sticker price is the smallest surprise in owning an AI workstation. A GB10 desk unit such as the ASUS Ascent GX10 1 TB at S$7,200 costs very little to power, while a 1,600 W GB300 tower such as the ASUS ExpertCenter Pro ET900N G3 (price on request) can run to several thousand dollars of electricity a year if it never rests. This post puts the current SP Group tariff against both machines with the arithmetic shown, then walks through the costs that rarely appear on a quotation: storage growth, 200/400 GbE cabling and switching, backups, OS and driver updates, staff time, warranty and support, insurance and depreciation. For the wider picture, start with the ASUS Agent Computer guide.

The running-cost checklist at a glance

Electricity: the SP Group tariff, with the kWh maths

SP Group's published electricity tariff for 1 October to 31 December 2026 is 28.59 cents per kWh before GST, or 31.16 cents with GST. It is revised quarterly; Q4 is 10.4% below Q3's 31.91 cents. SP Group's page shows one regulated tariff and no separate business rate; reporting on the Q4 revision says non-household tariffs fell by 10.6% on average without giving a figure. If your office buys electricity from a retailer or on a contract, substitute your own rate in the sums below.

Watts divided by 1,000, times hours, gives kWh; kWh times the tariff gives dollars. The rated maximum is used as a pessimistic ceiling; real draw depends on workload.

Scenario (stated assumption) Energy Cost at 31.16 cents/kWh (with GST) Cost at 28.59 cents/kWh (before GST)
GX10, 240 W adapter maximum, 24 h x 365 days 0.24 kW x 8,760 h = 2,102.4 kWh S$655 a year (about S$54 a 30-day month) S$601 a year
GX10, 240 W, office hours only (8 h x 22 days x 12 months) 0.24 kW x 2,112 h = 506.9 kWh S$158 a year S$145 a year
GX10 at the GB10 chip's 140 W TDP, 24/7 (excludes SSD, networking and adapter losses) 0.14 kW x 8,760 h = 1,226.4 kWh S$382 a year S$351 a year
GB300 tower, 1,600 W, 24 h x 365 days 1.6 kW x 8,760 h = 14,016 kWh S$4,367 a year (about S$359 a 30-day month) S$4,007 a year
GB300 tower, 1,600 W average 50% (800 W), 24/7 0.8 kW x 8,760 h = 7,008 kWh S$2,184 a year S$2,004 a year
GB300 tower, 1,600 W, office hours only 1.6 kW x 2,112 h = 3,379.2 kWh S$1,053 a year S$966 a year

Two readings. A GX10 left running around the clock costs less to power in a year than a single month of heavy frontier-API use in our local AI vs cloud API cost model, so electricity is not the reason to hesitate over a GB10 unit. A GB300 tower is different: at full load all year it approaches S$4,400, which belongs in the budget alongside the dedicated circuit and UPS our DGX Station office installation checklist covers. Neither figure includes air-conditioning; a 1,600 W tower in a small room adds a cooling load for facilities to assess.

Storage growth: models are big and they multiply

Model files accumulate faster than most teams expect. A 70B model at FP16 is about 140 GB of weights; the GLM-5.2 checkpoint served on GB300 hardware is 433 GB. Add quantised variants, fine-tuned checkpoints, containers and vector indexes, and 1 TB fills quickly. On the GX10 the decision is made at purchase: the 2 TB unit is S$8,050 and the 4 TB unit is S$9,850, so moving from 1 TB to 4 TB costs S$2,650. The ET900N G3 comes in 2-SSD and 4-SSD SKUs; confirm drive sizes with us when requesting a quote.

Networking: cables, optics and the switch nobody budgeted

A single GB10 unit needs nothing more than a LAN port, and the GX10's 10 GbE port is best served by a switch with a 10GBASE-T port. Clustering is where costs appear. Two units connect directly with one QSFP cable: the ASUS QSFP cable for the GX10 at S$120, the NVIDIA QSFP112 400G DAC at S$155 or the HP QSFP112 DAC at S$365. NVIDIA states that four units need an external 200 GbE switch (QSFP56-DD, RoCE v2); quote it before planning a four-unit cluster. Our guide to clustering two GX10 units covers the cabling. A GB300 tower has two empty 400 GbE QSFP112 cages; ASUS's -T SKUs ship with two transceivers, and otherwise you need DACs for short runs or optics and fibre for longer ones.

Backups, insurance and depreciation

Whatever sits on a desk unit's internal storage is a single copy until you make another. Base models can be downloaded again; fine-tuned weights, agent configurations and vector indexes cannot. Budget for a second copy on your existing NAS or backup service, ideally with one copy off-site, and test a restore at commissioning rather than after a failure.

Updates, staff time and support

GB10 units run DGX OS, which NVIDIA and the OEMs update regularly; ASUS support listed DGX OS 7.5.0-2 on 29 July 2026. Each update means release notes, downtime, checking the model server still works and rolling back if it does not. Our post on DGX OS updates for GX10 owners shows what that involves. A GB300 tower adds BMC firmware and a management VLAN. It needs a named owner, and an engineer's hour is a cost whether or not it appears on an invoice. SourceIT commissions units delivered updated, networked and serving models, which removes the first-week effort; ongoing care remains yours or a service contract's.

Every ASUS unit we supply carries the official ASUS Singapore warranty; confirm the term and service level for your SKU when requesting a quote, and weigh what a week without the machine would cost your team. A S$7,200 to S$9,850 box that fits in a bag, or a tower quoted on request, should go on the asset register and your office contents or equipment insurance schedule; ask your insurer whether high-value computing equipment needs to be declared individually. For accounts, AI hardware depreciates like other IT equipment, and the treatment of capital allowances for tax is set by IRAS, so ask your accountant how it applies to your company. Plan the refresh: newer hardware will arrive within the useful life you assign.

Do the hidden costs change the decision?

For a GB10 desk unit, rarely: staff time is the line that matters. For a GB300 tower the running costs are material and belong in the budget from day one. If you are still weighing local hardware against an API, read when running AI locally beats cloud and do you need an AI supercomputer at all; if you are sizing for a team, can a mini AI supercomputer replace a server sets out where a desk unit stops. Buyer profiles are in who should buy a S$10,000 AI computer, and the full GB10 field, including the NVIDIA DGX Spark 4 TB at S$8,600, is in our GB10 buyer's guide.
