FortiGate Firewall Review: Is Fortinet Still Worth Buying in 2026?

For most Singapore SMEs, yes, with two conditions: keep it patched promptly, and budget for the subscription as well as the box. Fortinet FortiGate remains one of the strongest choices at the entry level. Its published inspection throughput is high for the price, a single FortiGate can manage Fortinet switches and access points, its FortiGuard threat intelligence is extensive, and Gartner named Fortinet a Leader in its 2026 Magic Quadrant for Hybrid Mesh Firewall. The weaknesses are real too: several critical FortiOS vulnerabilities were exploited in the wild between 2024 and 2026, licensing takes some learning, and Fortinet's removal of SSL VPN pushes remote access onto IPsec. This assessment is based on Fortinet's published specifications, documentation and security advisories, not on our own lab testing. What does FortiGate do well?

• Inspection throughput. Fortinet designs its own security processors, and its entry G-series models publish threat protection figures above 1 Gbps from the 50G upwards, enough for full inspection on a typical business fibre line.
• One box for the network. Through Fortinet's Security Fabric, the FortiGate configures FortiSwitch VLANs and FortiAP Wi-Fi, which keeps small networks simpler to manage.
• Threat intelligence at scale. FortiGuard Labs says it analyses more than 100 billion events a day and blocked 3.8 trillion exploitation attempts in 2025.
• Features without extra licences. SD-WAN, IPsec VPN, routing, high availability and application control (with FortiCare) are included.
• A clear upgrade path. The same FortiOS runs from the 30G to data-centre models.

What are the drawbacks?

• A busy vulnerability record. Fortinet's own advisories list actively exploited critical flaws, including CVE-2024-21762 in SSL VPN (2024), CVE-2024-55591 (2025), CVE-2025-59718 in FortiCloud SSO (December 2025) and CVE-2026-24858 (January 2026). In April 2025 Fortinet also disclosed that attackers had left a symbolic link that kept read-only access on some devices even after patching. Fortinet publishes advisories and fixes promptly, but owners must apply them.
• Remote access changes. SSL VPN tunnel mode is gone from FortiOS 7.6.3, SSL VPN was never supported on the 30G and 50G, and Fortinet recommends IPsec VPN with FortiClient. Offices moving from older units need to migrate users.
• Feature limits on small models. Video filtering, inline CASB and content disarm are not available on the 30G and 50G series, and 2 GB RAM models such as the 40F have lost several features.
• Licensing complexity. ATP, UTP and Enterprise bundles, FortiCare tiers and model exceptions take time to understand.
• Subscription dependence. When FortiGuard lapses, signatures stop updating and web filtering stops.

FortiGate rewards owners who patch. It punishes those who install it and forget it, as does every firewall.

Who should buy one?

• SMEs that want inspection, VPN, SD-WAN and Wi-Fi and switch management from one vendor.
• Offices with an IT provider who knows FortiOS and will keep it patched.
• Companies working towards CSA's Cyber Essentials, which requires a perimeter firewall.

1. Run Fortinet's recommended release, FortiOS 7.6.8 for entry models in October 2026, and check PSIRT advisories weekly.
2. Keep the admin interface off the internet and require MFA for administrators.
3. Use IPsec VPN with MFA for remote staff.
4. Buy multi-year UTP and renew before expiry.
5. Send logs to FortiAnalyzer or another log store.
