FortiGate 40F vs 50G vs 70G: Which Firewall Makes Sense for Your Business?

For a new purchase in late 2026, the FortiGate 50G suits most small offices and the FortiGate 70G suits growing ones; the FortiGate 40F makes sense mainly if you already run 40Fs and want to match them. The reason is not only speed. The 40F has 2 GB of memory, and Fortinet has been removing features from 2 GB models in recent FortiOS releases: SSL VPN went in 7.6.1, proxy-based features in 7.6.3, and FortiAI-Assist is not supported. The 50G roughly doubles the 40F's threat protection throughput, and the 70G adds ten ports and support for far more access points and switches. At SourceIT, the 50G is S$1,819.20 and the 70G S$2,630.40 with 1-year Unified Threat Protection (UTP); the 40F is not on our current Fortinet price list, so ask us for availability (listed 30 Oct 2026).

Specifications from the Fortinet Product Matrix, October 2026 edition; all are "up to" figures measured by Fortinet. Prices listed 30 Oct 2026.

What changed on the 40F with recent FortiOS releases?

  • FortiOS 7.6.1: SSL VPN removed from 2 GB RAM models, including the 40F. Fortinet advises IPsec VPN instead.
  • FortiOS 7.6.3: SSL VPN tunnel mode removed on all models; 2 GB RAM models also lost proxy-related features, Security Rating and the Security Fabric topology view.
  • From FortiOS 7.4.4: video filtering and inline CASB unavailable on the 40F.
  • FortiAI-Assist: Fortinet says models with 2 GB RAM or less do not support it.

The 40F is still in Fortinet's October 2026 product matrix and still supported by FortiOS 8.0, and we found no official end-of-order notice for it. Third-party lifecycle trackers report end-of-order dates for some FortiWiFi-40F variants; check the status with us before buying.

The 40F still protects well. The question is whether you want to start a five-year commitment on the model losing features fastest.

Do the 50G and 70G have limits too?

Yes. Fortinet's ordering guide says video filtering, inline CASB and content disarm and reconstruction are not available on the 30G and 50G series in any FortiOS build. And on the 30G, 50G and 90G and lower G-series, SSL VPN was never supported; the 70G supports it only on older 7.2 releases. In practice, every current entry FortiGate uses IPsec VPN with FortiClient for remote staff. If inline CASB matters to you, look at the 70G or above and confirm with us first.

How do you size the right one?

Fortinet does not publish user counts, so size by three things:

  1. Your internet line against threat protection throughput. On a 1 Gbps fibre line with full inspection, the 40F's 600 Mbps would be the bottleneck; the 50G (1.1 Gbps) or 70G (1.3 Gbps) keep up. On a 500 Mbps line, all three cope.
  2. SSL inspection. If you inspect encrypted traffic, which most security policies should, the 40F's 310 Mbps is a real limit; the 50G and 70G are over four times faster.
  3. Ports and growth. Five ports are enough for one internet line, a switch and a couple of separate zones. Offices with several VLANs, two internet lines, many FortiAPs or more than eight FortiSwitches need the 70G's ten ports and higher limits.

As a rough guide only: the 50G fits a small office of up to about 25 staff on a single fibre line; the 70G fits a busier office of up to about 50 that wants headroom; beyond that, look at the FortiGate 90G. Real sizing depends on traffic, not headcount.

What about the 30G?

The FortiGate 30G (S$1,236 with 1-year UTP) has four GE ports and 500 Mbps threat protection, which suits a very small office or branch on a slower line. For most offices the extra S$583.20 for the 50G buys more than double the inspection throughput.

Frequently asked questions

Is the FortiGate 50G better than the 40F? For new purchases, generally yes. Fortinet lists 1.1 Gbps threat protection for the 50G against 600 Mbps for the 40F, and four times the SSL inspection throughput.

Is the FortiGate 40F end of life? We found no official end-of-order notice for the FortiGate-40F as of October 2026, and it is supported by FortiOS 8.0. Some FortiWiFi-40F variants are reported as end of order by third parties.

Does the FortiGate 40F still support SSL VPN? No, not on FortiOS 7.6.1 or later, which removed SSL VPN from 2 GB RAM models. Fortinet recommends IPsec VPN.

When should I choose the FortiGate 70G? When you need more than five ports, more than 16 FortiAPs or 8 FortiSwitches, more sessions, or a little more inspection headroom.

How much do the FortiGate 50G and 70G cost in Singapore? At SourceIT on 30 Oct 2026, with 1-year UTP, the 50G is S$1,819.20 and the 70G is S$2,630.40.
