Can AI-Powered Conference Cameras Finally Solve the Problem of Remote Participants Feeling Left Out?
AI-powered conference cameras can make remote participants feel much less left out, because they stop the far end staring at a wide, distant shot of a table and show faces, speakers and reactions instead. They cannot solve it alone: poor room audio, or a meeting run as an in-room conversation with an audience, will still leave people out.
Below: what the AI features do, from vendor descriptions of Microsoft Teams IntelliFrame, the Jabra PanaCast 50, Logitech Sight, Yealink SmartVision 40, Poly Studio E70, Logitech MeetUp and Yealink UVC40 E2, and where the limits sit. For whole-room design, see Can Technology Make Virtual Meetings Feel Almost Like Being There?; this one stays on the camera.

Why do remote participants feel left out in the first place?
A fixed wide camera shows the people nearest the lens clearly and everyone else as small, side-on figures. Remote attendees cannot tell who is speaking or judge when to come in, while the room can see itself perfectly well, so the conversation drifts inward. AI cameras tackle visibility. The behaviour of the meeting is a people issue.
What do auto framing and speaker tracking actually do?
There are three broad approaches in current products.
Auto framing fits the shot to whoever is present. Yealink says Auto Framing on the UVC40 E2 "detects attendees and adjusts automatically as more join"; Logitech says MeetUp "automatically adjusts camera position and zoom to find and frame people in the room". It is a sensible default for huddle rooms.
Speaker tracking follows the person talking. Yealink pairs Speaker Tracking with sound localisation on the UVC40 E2 for "real-time speaker close-ups", and Jabra's Virtual Director on the PanaCast 50 "adjusts the camera view of the room in real-time to focus on the active speakers". Poly lets you choose between group framing, people framing or speaker framing on the Studio E70 under its DirectorAI technology.
Multi-person composition shows several people at once in separate tiles rather than one moving shot. Jabra's Dynamic Composition "offers a choice of meeting room participant views", and Yealink's IntelliFocus on the SmartVision 40 "displays real-time close-up shots of the recent speakers". In glass-walled rooms, Jabra's Intelligent Meeting Space and Yealink's Video Fence mark the meeting area so passers-by stay out of shot.
What is Microsoft Teams IntelliFrame?
IntelliFrame is Microsoft's own AI layer for Teams Rooms. Microsoft describes it as "an AI-driven online meeting experience designed to improve hybrid meetings": participants are placed in frames as they join, active speakers appear in larger frames, and a panoramic view of the room sits at the bottom of the screen by default. Remote users can choose "Hide panorama".
Microsoft states IntelliFrame is available on Teams Rooms "with a Pro license equipped with a supported camera", so check both; our post on Teams Rooms licences and the features nobody uses covers Basic vs Pro. Microsoft also publishes limits: the room supports a maximum of 12 people and the meeting no more than 64 participants, people should sit at least a metre apart and within 5 metres of the camera, and the camera "may sometimes identify inanimate objects as people", typically because of movement, shadows or wind.
Do you need more than one camera?
In long or wide rooms, a single front-of-room camera will always see some people from the side. Multi-camera systems address the angle rather than the zoom. Logitech Sight is a tabletop camera that works with Rally Bar or Rally Bar Mini; Logitech says RightSight 2 "chooses the best view between the camera on the table and the camera at the front of the room", using machine vision AI and audio to identify who is speaking and which way they are facing. Logitech also notes that Sight "requires a front-of-room camera" and, in appliance mode, a room software licence that is not included.
A second camera adds cabling (Sight runs on PoE+ over Cat6a, per Logitech) and another device to update. It suits boardroom tables where people face each other, not four-seat huddle rooms. AI framing fixes what remote people can see. It does not fix what they can hear, or whether anyone in the room remembers they are there.
What AI cameras cannot fix
Better framing brings remote participants closer to the room, but it cannot give them an identical experience to sitting at the table. The gaps are practical:
- Audio comes first. A close-up of someone the far end cannot hear only highlights the problem. Check microphone coverage first.
- Tracking can be jumpy. Fast switching in a lively discussion can distract; try a calmer group or composition mode.
- False detections happen. Microsoft says so for IntelliFrame; reflections and movement can confuse any vision system.
- Habits matter more. Calling on remote people by name and keeping chat visible on the room display do more for inclusion than any lens.
- Privacy needs a plan. Face-detecting cameras raise fair questions from staff; see Are Smart Meeting Room Cameras a Privacy Nightmare? Poly lists a motorised privacy shutter on the Studio E70.
AI features depend on firmware and platform updates; see our posts on update management for meeting rooms, what happens when a cloud service goes down and designing the office network for outages.
Which AI camera suits which room?
For huddle rooms, a USB video bar with auto framing is enough. The Yealink UVC40 E2 All-in-One USB UHD 4K Video Bar (S$645.00) adds speaker tracking and eight microphones; the Logitech MeetUp 4K ConferenceCam (S$921.38) uses RightSight framing and a motorised lens. Both were in stock.
For small to medium Teams Rooms, look at all-in-one cameras with multi-person views. The Yealink SmartVision 40 is price on request, quoted per room configuration. The Jabra PanaCast 50 Video Bar is also price on request.
For large rooms and long tables, consider a dual-sensor front camera such as the HP Poly Studio E70 Smart Conference Camera (price on request), or add a second angle with Logitech Sight alongside a Rally Bar (price on request). Our Yealink camera guide maps more options by room size.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI conference camera? A meeting room camera that detects people and adjusts the shot automatically, through auto framing, speaker tracking or separate tiles for several participants, so remote attendees see faces instead of one wide view.
Is auto framing the same as speaker tracking? No. Auto framing fits the shot to everyone present. Speaker tracking follows the person talking, often using microphone direction as well as vision. Many cameras offer both and let you choose the mode.
Do I need Teams Rooms Pro for IntelliFrame? Microsoft states IntelliFrame is available on Teams Rooms with a Pro licence and a supported camera. Check both before you plan around it.
How many people can IntelliFrame handle? Microsoft lists a maximum of 12 people in the room and no more than 64 participants in the meeting, with people seated at least a metre apart and within 5 metres of the camera.
Will an AI camera make hybrid meetings feel like being in the room? It can make remote participants far more visible and engaged, but it cannot guarantee an identical experience to being there. Good audio and meeting habits matter as much as the camera.
When is a second camera worth it? In long or boardroom-style rooms where people face each other and a front camera sees them side-on. Logitech Sight, for example, works with Rally Bar or Rally Bar Mini to pick the best angle.
