PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Cisco SFP mini-GBIC Module (GLC-SX-MMD) — Local Warranty

1000BASE-SX Short-Reach Multimode Optic

The Cisco GLC-SX-MMD is a 1000BASE-SX short-wavelength SFP (mini-GBIC) transceiver operating at 850 nm over multimode fibre. It is the standard Cisco optic for Gigabit Ethernet links within a building or across a campus riser, with reach from 220 m on older 62.5 µm fibre up to 1 km on laser-optimised OM3 and OM4 fibre.

Reach Depends on Your Fibre

Cisco specifies 220 m on 62.5 µm fibre rated 160 MHz·km and 275 m on 200 MHz·km fibre; 500 m on 50 µm fibre rated 400 MHz·km and 550 m on 500 MHz·km (OM2) fibre; and 1 km on 50 µm OM3 (2000 MHz·km) and OM4 (4700 MHz·km) fibre. Checking the fibre grade before ordering avoids link problems on longer runs.

Digital Optical Monitoring

The "D" in GLC-SX-MMD indicates Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM). On supported Cisco platforms, the host switch can read optical transmit and receive power and module temperature, which helps diagnose dirty connectors or marginal links.

Extended Temperature Range

Cisco rates the GLC-SX-MMD for the extended (EXT) operating temperature range of -5 to 85°C.

Hot-Pluggable, IEEE 802.3z Compliant

The module is a hot-pluggable SFP with a dual LC/PC connector and complies with IEEE 802.3z. Cisco describes 1000BASE-SX SFPs as interchangeable across a wide range of Cisco products and mixable with 1000BASE-LX/LH or 1000BASE-ZX interfaces on a per-port basis.

Replacement for GLC-SX-MM

Cisco named the GLC-SX-MMD as the replacement when it ended sale of the earlier non-DOM GLC-SX-MM and the SFP-GE-S module (End-of-Sale 8 March 2013).

Compatibility & Software Support

Host Compatibility

The GLC-SX-MMD is supported in SFP ports across many Cisco switches, routers and line cards. Platform support, DOM reporting and minimum software release vary, so confirm the host in the Cisco Optics Compatibility Matrix.

Interoperability

Both ends of the link must be 850 nm 1000BASE-SX optics over multimode fibre. It does not link to 1310 nm 1000BASE-LX/LH optics such as the GLC-LH-SMD, although the two types can be used on different ports of the same switch.

Lifecycle

The GLC-SX-MMD is itself the replacement product named in Cisco's End-of-Sale notice for the GLC-SX-MM and SFP-GE-S (End-of-Sale 8 March 2013; last date of support 31 March 2018).

Warranty

Local Singapore warranty. For warranty claims, keep your SourceIT invoice as proof of purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cisco GLC-SX-MMD

How far will the GLC-SX-MMD reach?

It depends on the multimode fibre: 220-275 m on 62.5 µm fibre, 500-550 m on standard 50 µm fibre, and up to 1 km on OM3 or OM4.

Does it work on single-mode fibre?

No. 1000BASE-SX is a multimode-only optic. For single-mode fibre, use a 1000BASE-LX/LH module such as the GLC-LH-SMD.

What is the difference between GLC-SX-MM and GLC-SX-MMD?

The GLC-SX-MMD supports Digital Optical Monitoring and is Cisco's named replacement for the discontinued GLC-SX-MM.

What connector does it use?

A dual LC/PC connector, so use LC-terminated multimode patch cords.

What temperature range is it rated for?

Cisco rates it for the extended range, -5 to 85°C.
