1000BASE-LX/LH Optic for Single-Mode and Multimode Fibre
The Cisco GLC-LH-SMD= is a 1000BASE-LX/LH long-wavelength SFP transceiver operating at 1310 nm. It carries Gigabit Ethernet up to 10 km over standard single-mode fibre, or up to 550 m over multimode fibre when used with an IEEE-specified mode-conditioning patch cord.
Digital Optical Monitoring
The "D" in GLC-LH-SMD indicates Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) support. On supported Cisco platforms, DOM lets the switch report transceiver parameters such as transmit and receive optical power and temperature, which helps when troubleshooting a fibre link or checking margin.
Extended Temperature Range
Cisco rates the GLC-LH-SMD for the extended (EXT) operating temperature range of -5 to 85°C, suiting wiring closets and enclosures that run warmer than a data-centre environment.
Hot-Pluggable, IEEE 802.3z Compliant
SFP modules are hot-pluggable I/O devices that plug into SFP ports on Cisco switches and routers. The GLC-LH-SMD complies with IEEE 802.3z and uses a dual LC/PC connector.
Replacement for GLC-LH-SM
Cisco named the GLC-LH-SMD as the replacement when it ended sale of the earlier non-DOM GLC-LH-SM and the SFP-GE-L module (End-of-Sale 8 March 2013).

Host Compatibility
The GLC-LH-SMD is supported across a wide range of Cisco switches, routers and modules with SFP ports. Support, including DOM reporting and the minimum software release, varies by platform, so confirm your host device in the Cisco Optics Compatibility Matrix.
Multimode Use
Cisco states that a mode-conditioning patch cord, as specified by the IEEE standard, is required when the 1000BASE-LX/LH module is used over multimode fibre. Without it, link reach and reliability on multimode fibre are not assured.
Interoperability
Each end of a link must use a 1000BASE-LX/LH-compatible optic at 1310 nm. It does not interoperate with 850 nm 1000BASE-SX optics such as the GLC-SX-MMD.
Lifecycle
The GLC-LH-SMD is itself the replacement product named in Cisco's End-of-Sale notice for the GLC-LH-SM and SFP-GE-L (End-of-Sale 8 March 2013; last date of support 31 March 2018).
