APC RBC59 Replacement Battery Cartridge — The Smart-UPS SC 1500 Battery

The APC RBC59 is the sealed lead-acid replacement battery cartridge for the Smart-UPS SC 1500 and SC1500I, the 2U rack-and-tower units that protected a great many small server rooms and comms cabinets through the 2010s. Schneider still lists the cartridge as commercialised even though both host models went end of life in 2022, which is exactly what you want to see on a service part.

The cartridge is supplied assembled, in charcoal, with a published service life of three to five years — a figure Schneider omits on most cartridges in this range but does publish for the RBC59. If your SC1500 or SC1500I has never had its battery changed, it is well past that window.

RBC59 Specifications: Four Fabricated Figures, Replaced

This page was rebuilt from Schneider’s own product data sheet, and not one specification from the previous version survived. The dimensions given as 181 x 76 x 167 mm match no source anywhere; Schneider publishes 197 x 149 x 64 mm. The 9 Ah capacity was wrong too: the only capacity Schneider quotes anywhere for this part is 7.0 Ah, and even that is a per-block figure rather than a cartridge one. The weight was given as 6.5 kg against a published 5.34 kg. And the GTIN was wrong as well: the correct code is 0731304235590, not the one previously shown.

The UL and CE claims have gone, because no Schneider source states either for this part. Schneider does not publish a RoHS or REACh position for the RBC59 at all, so rather than borrow the wording used on its siblings, those rows are absent here.

Why This Listing Does Not State a Cartridge Voltage — and a Note on the Weight

Schneider’s data sheet for the RBC59 leaves both the battery-voltage field and the capacity field blank. What it does publish is a count of battery blocks per string — two — without ever stating how many strings the cartridge contains. Its marketing copy separately says “12V 7.0AH”, which is the rating of one block, not of the assembly. Because the number of strings is unstated, the cartridge voltage cannot be derived, and this listing does not guess at it.

The same gap raises an honest question about the shipping weight, and we would rather raise it than let you discover it on the loading bay. Schneider’s published net weight of 5.34 kg and its 197 x 149 x 64 mm case both describe a two-block tray, while the runtime the SC1500I is rated for, and the packing weight quoted by one authorised distributor, both point at a heavier assembly. If you are quoting freight or planning rack access, ask us to confirm the delivered weight with the distributor before you commit. Servicing a Legacy Smart-UPS SC in a Singapore Comms Cabinet

The SC1500I was a 230 V workhorse: 2U, rack or tower, four C13 outlets, and just enough runtime to carry a switch stack and a small server through the sort of brief interruption Singapore’s grid occasionally produces during storm season. Units of that vintage are usually still doing their job, and the battery is the only part that has genuinely worn out.

Heat is what ends them. A 2U unit in a closed cabinet with poor airflow runs warmer than the room, and every few degrees of sustained ambient takes meaningful life off a sealed lead-acid cell. If you are replacing the cartridge, it is worth checking the cabinet’s ventilation at the same time — otherwise the new one will follow the old one on the same schedule.

Which UPS models does the RBC59 fit?

Schneider describes the RBC59 in its own product copy as the replaceable battery for the APC Smart-UPS SC range and does not name models. An authorised distributor cross-reference and two further channel sources agree on the pair: SC1500 and SC1500I. Those are distributor statements rather than Schneider ones, and they are consistent across every source we checked.

The 230 V question, answered

The SC1500I is the 230 V build — the Smart-UPS SC 1500 VA rack-and-tower 2U with four C13 outlets — and it is the one sold into this region. The SC1500 alongside it is the 120 V variant. So the RBC59 is a genuine Singapore service part, not a North-American-only line.

Both hosts have been discontinued since 2022, and Schneider names the SMC1500IC as the SC1500I’s replacement. That does not affect the cartridge, which Schneider still lists as commercialised, but it is worth knowing if you are deciding between a battery and a new unit.

Why no voltage or capacity figure appears above

Runtime after replacement

A fresh cartridge restores the runtime the SC1500I was designed around and does not extend it. Runtime depends on the connected load, so a unit carrying a switch stack will hold far longer than one running near its 1500 VA rating. Run a self-test after the swap and compare it against the unit’s published runtime curve; on a unit of this age a short result may be telling you about the load that has crept onto it over the years.

Can it be changed with the UPS running?

Yes, on this family. Schneider FAQ FA303216, “Does my Smart-UPS have ‘Hot Swap’ batteries?” states that all Smart-UPS models with user-replaceable batteries have featured hot-swap battery modules since 1995, and its scope explicitly includes part numbers beginning “SC”. Schneider adds its own caveat, and it is worth repeating: during the brief period when the battery is disconnected the UPS has no reserve, so a power event at that moment will drop the load. Pick a quiet window, not a stormy afternoon.

The RBC32 and RBC33 entries deserve a word of warning. Those two and the RBC59 are all published at 197 x 149 x 64 mm with net weights within ten grams of each other, and they serve completely different UPS families. Nothing you can measure will separate them.
