Should Singapore SMEs Buy 50 Lenovo ThinkPads Now Before Prices Rise Further?
Buy now if you already need the laptops in the next few months, especially to replace Windows 10 machines. Do not buy early only to beat a price rise that nobody can guarantee. Analysts expect memory costs to keep rising in late 2026, but more slowly than earlier in the year, and IDC has said near-term PC promotions are possible. For a 50-unit order the real question is how much budget is exposed either way. Fifty ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 5 225U, 16GB, 512GB at S$1,746.40 each come to S$87,320. Fifty ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 5 325, 16GB, 3Y Onsite at S$2,301 each come to S$115,050 (listed 3 Nov 2026). Every 1% price move on those orders is S$873 or S$1,151. For most SMEs, a firm quote for the units you need now, with a plan for the rest, is a better bet than committing the whole budget on a guess.
What are analysts actually saying about prices?
The evidence points in more than one direction, and that is the honest answer.
- Memory costs are still rising, but more slowly. TrendForce reported that conventional DRAM contract prices rose about 93–98% quarter-on-quarter in Q1 2026. On 30 Sep 2026 it forecast a 10–15% rise for Q4 2026, saying the pace of increases was slowing.
- PC makers have already passed costs on. Reuters reported on 13 Aug 2026 that Lenovo had raised PC prices twice this year. In its preliminary Q3 2026 results, Gartner said higher memory and storage costs were "now fully reflected in PC pricing".
- Demand has fallen. Gartner put Q3 2026 PC shipments down 22.4% year on year, and IDC put them down 20.1%. IDC's Jitesh Ubrani said channels are wary of holding inventory while high prices suppress demand, and that promotions are possible in the near term.
- Singapore prices are expected to stay high. The Straits Times reported on 13 Sep 2026 that IDC expects PC prices to stay elevated through 2027, with only slight easing likely in the second half of 2027.
- Vendors expect cost increases to slow. HP's CFO said in its Q3 FY26 results that input costs would keep rising "at a slower rate" than in fiscal 2026.
Put together, the analysts are not forecasting sharp drops, and they are not forecasting sharp rises either. That is why the deciding factors should be your own schedule and budget.

Based on SourceIT list prices from 3 Nov 2026 (E14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 5 225U S$1,746.40; T14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 5 325 3Y Onsite S$2,301.00), before volume pricing. The percentages are illustrations, not forecasts. Your actual quote may differ.
Waiting three months could save about S$4,400 on the E14 order if prices fall 5%. It could cost about S$8,700 if prices rise 10%. Whether that risk matters depends on what waiting costs you in other ways.
Buying early is a bet on the price. Phasing the purchase sets a limit on how much you can lose either way.
What does waiting cost besides the price?
- Windows 10 security updates. Windows 10 support ended on 14 Oct 2025. Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates for organisations cost US$61 per device in year one and US$122 per device in year two, starting Oct 2026. For 50 machines kept on Windows 10 another year, that is US$6,100. See Is Your Business Ready for the End of Another Popular Operating System?
- Shorter quote validity. HPE cut quote validity from 30 to 14 days, TD SYNNEX said vendors had cut it from 30 to 15 days, and Dell said its quotes are valid for "the shortest period of time they've ever been". If approval takes four weeks, a quote may expire before the purchase order is signed. Our guide Why Your Lenovo ThinkPad Quotation Keeps Changing explains how to handle this.
- Stock of specific configurations. Staying on one standard model across 50 units makes imaging and support simpler. A configuration that is in stock today may not be in stock next quarter.
What does buying early cost?
- Cash tied up. Laptops sitting in a storeroom earn nothing, and Gartner expects businesses to keep PCs about 15% longer, so replacement can often be staggered.
- Warranty and lifecycle. Check when the warranty starts on units you buy as spares. Cover may start before the laptop reaches a desk.
- Locking in a specification. Fifty identical 16GB laptops with soldered memory cannot be adjusted later. If you buy early, choose upgradeable models such as the E14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 5 225U, which has two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots up to 64GB, or the T14 Gen 7, which uses a replaceable LPCAMM2 module. What is a sensible plan for a 50-laptop purchase?
- Count the laptops you actually need now: machines that are failing, still on Windows 10, or needed for new hires. Get a firm quote for those and buy within the quote's validity period.
- Keep a small spare pool, typically a few units, rather than half a year's supply.
- Schedule the rest in quarterly batches on the same standard model, and request a fresh quote for each batch. Ask us about delivery and pricing for a phased order.
- Split by role. Not every one of the 50 needs the same laptop. Moving light users to the E-series and keeping T-series for heavier users can save more than any change in timing. See Why Your Company Should Stop Giving Every Employee the Same Laptop.
- Budget for a range, not a single number. Present management with the ±5–10% range from the table above so a price change does not stall approval.

Frequently asked questions
Will ThinkPad prices rise further? Nobody can say for certain. TrendForce forecasts DRAM contract prices up 10–15% in Q4 2026, with increases slowing, while IDC has said near-term PC promotions are possible. IDC also expects Singapore PC prices to stay elevated through 2027.
How much would a 5% price change cost on 50 ThinkPads? On SourceIT's 3 Nov 2026 list prices, S$4,366 on 50 ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 5 225U and S$5,752.50 on 50 ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 5 325 3Y Onsite.
Should an SME buy all 50 laptops at once? Only if it needs them all now. Buying what you need now and scheduling the rest in batches limits how much budget is exposed to a price move in either direction.
How long are laptop quotations valid now? They are shorter than they used to be. HPE cut validity from 30 to 14 days, and TD SYNNEX said vendors had cut it from 30 to 15 days. Ask for the validity date on every quote.
Does staying on Windows 10 cost anything? Yes. Microsoft's Extended Security Updates for organisations cost US$122 per device in year two from Oct 2026, or US$6,100 for 50 machines.
