One Employee, Ten AI Agents: Is This the Future of Small Businesses?

One employee supervising ten AI agents is possible for a small business today, but only for narrow, repeatable jobs with clear rules and a human approving anything that costs money or reaches a customer. The bottleneck is not the agents, it is the time that person spends checking their work. Done well, it turns one capable generalist into a small operations team. Done badly, it multiplies mistakes ten times faster.

This post looks at which agent jobs make sense for a Singapore SME, where agents still fall over, what oversight really costs, and whether to run them in the cloud or on local hardware such as the ASUS Ascent GX10, NVIDIA DGX Spark, ASUS Ascent QN10 or an RTX Spark laptop such as the MSI Prestige N16 Flip AI+.

What can AI agents realistically do for a small business?

An AI agent is software that takes a goal, uses tools (email, a spreadsheet, a web store, a database) and works through steps with limited supervision. The jobs that suit agents today share three traits: the inputs are digital, the rules can be written down, and a mistake can be caught before it does damage.

Agent job What the agent does What the human keeps Risk if unchecked
Inbox triage Sorts, labels and drafts replies to routine enquiries Sending anything that commits the company Wrong tone or promise to a customer
Quotation drafting Pulls part numbers and list prices into a draft quote Final pricing, discounts, lead times Under-pricing or quoting the wrong SKU
Catalogue updates Drafts product descriptions and spec tables from datasheets Spec accuracy and publishing Published errors that mislead buyers
Weekly reports Collects sales, stock and ticket data into a summary Interpreting the numbers Confident but wrong conclusions
Meeting follow-up Summarises notes and drafts action lists Who owns what, and deadlines Missed or invented action items
Supplier and price research Compares specs and public information Choosing the supplier Outdated or hallucinated details

Notice the pattern. In every row the agent does the gathering and drafting, and a person makes the decision. That is what "ten agents" looks like in practice: ten specialised assistants, each with a narrow brief and a clear handover point.

The optimistic case: the "agent boss"

Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index, a Microsoft-commissioned survey of 31,000 workers in 31 markets carried out by Edelman Data x Intelligence, describes a new role it calls the "agent boss": someone who builds, delegates to and manages agents to amplify their impact. It reports that 82% of leaders surveyed were confident they would use digital labour to expand workforce capacity within 12 to 18 months, and it proposes a "human-agent ratio" as a management metric. It is a vendor's view, but the idea fits small firms: an SME rarely has a dedicated analyst or admin assistant, and agents can cover parts of those roles.

Gartner is also bullish on the long term. In a June 2025 press release it predicted that at least 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through agentic AI by 2028, and that 33% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI by then.

The sceptical case: agents still make expensive mistakes

The same Gartner release carried a warning: over 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027, because of escalating costs, unclear business value or inadequate risk controls. Gartner also estimated that only about 130 of the thousands of vendors claiming agentic AI are real, a reminder to test products before trusting the label.

The most instructive example comes from an AI company testing its own model. In Project Vend, Anthropic and Andon Labs let Claude run a small office shop for about a month. It found suppliers for unusual items and adapted to customer requests, but it was talked into handing out discount codes, sold some stock below cost, gave customers a payment account that did not exist, and did not make money. Anthropic's own verdict was that it "would not hire" the agent to run the shop yet. Swap "office shop" for "online store" and those are exactly the failures an SME cannot afford: margin leakage, made-up details and an agent that can be persuaded by whoever is messaging it. What does oversight really cost?

This is the part most "one person, ten agents" pitches skip. Every agent needs someone to write its instructions, connect its tools, review its output, handle its exceptions and fix it when a website, supplier format or model update breaks it. If checking an agent's work takes nearly as long as doing it, the agent has not saved anything.

Practical rules we suggest:

  • Start with one agent, not ten. Prove time saved on a single job before adding the next.
  • Approval gates: agents draft, humans send, publish, pay or commit.
  • Least privilege: give each agent only the folders, mailboxes and systems it needs, ideally read-only at first.
  • Logs: keep a record of what each agent did so mistakes can be traced.
  • Exit plan: the human must still be able to do the job manually when the agent fails.

There is a people dimension too. If the one employee running the agents leaves, does anyone else understand them? Our companion piece, AI Agents Are Getting Smarter. Are Your Employees Getting Lazier?, covers how to keep skills in the team, and why AI projects fail after the demo covers the pilot traps.

Ten agents are only as good as the one person checking them. Hire the agents for the drafting and keep the decisions human.

Cloud agents or local agents?

Cloud AI services are the quickest way to start: nothing to install and access to the largest models. The trade-offs are per-use cost that grows with every agent, dependence on one provider's terms and uptime (see Are Businesses Becoming Too Dependent on ChatGPT?), and company data leaving your network.

Local agents run on hardware in your office. NVIDIA's DGX Spark platform, built on the GB10 chip, has 128GB of unified memory and supports models of up to 200 billion parameters on one unit, or up to 400 billion when two units are linked by a QSFP cable. That is enough for several agents to share a capable model under your own rules. Options on our store, as listed on 23 Oct 2026:

Local hardware is not free of work: someone has to maintain it. Our posts on the AI employee on your desk, setting up OpenClaw and NemoClaw on the GX10 and the local AI vs cloud API cost model go deeper, and ASUS Ascent QN10 vs GX10 explains which box suits which job.

SourceIT's verdict

Yes, one employee running several AI agents is a realistic future for small businesses, and for some it is already the present. But "ten" is a destination, not a starting point. Begin with one or two well-defined, low-risk jobs such as inbox triage and report drafting, keep a human approval step on anything external, measure the time actually saved, and expand only when the numbers hold. Choose cloud for speed of trial and local hardware when data control and predictable cost matter more.

Buying local AI hardware in Singapore

SourceIT is an ASUS reseller and supplies NVIDIA and MSI with local warranty; confirm the warranty term for your SKU when requesting a quote. Prices are as listed on 23 Oct 2026. Frequently asked questions

What is an AI agent? Software that takes a goal, uses tools such as email, spreadsheets or a web store, and works through steps with limited supervision, rather than only answering a single prompt.

Which tasks should a small business give to AI agents first? Digital, rule-based, low-risk jobs: inbox triage, draft quotations, catalogue description drafts, weekly reports and meeting follow-ups, with a human approving anything sent out.

Do agentic AI projects fail? Many may. Gartner predicted in June 2025 that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027 because of rising costs, unclear value or weak risk controls.

Can AI agents be trusted with money? Not without limits. In Anthropic's Project Vend, an AI running an office shop gave away discount codes and sold items below cost. Keep humans approving payments and pricing.

Can I run AI agents locally? Yes. A GB10 system such as the ASUS Ascent GX10 or NVIDIA DGX Spark has 128GB of unified memory and, according to NVIDIA, supports models of up to 200 billion parameters on one unit.

How many agents can one person manage? There is no fixed number. It depends on how long each agent's output takes to check. Start with one or two and add more only when the time saved is measurable.
