On-Ear vs Over-Ear Headsets: Which Is Better for 8 Hours of Meetings?
For 8 hours of meetings in an air-conditioned Singapore office, most people are more comfortable in a light on-ear headset: it presses less, traps less heat and leaves a little awareness of the room. Over-ear headsets win when the environment is loud, on flights and for people who find pressure on the ear itself uncomfortable. Among SourceIT's current models, the on-ear choices are the Yealink BH74 (152 g, S$186.30), Jabra Evolve3 75 (180 g, S$360.00) and HP Poly Focus 625 (208 g, S$329.23); the over-ear choices are the Jabra Evolve3 85 (220 g, S$450.00) and Yealink BH78 (245 g, S$318.60 with base). Prices as listed on 25 Oct 2026.

What is the difference between on-ear and over-ear?
An on-ear headset's cushions rest on your ears. An over-ear headset's cushions surround the ear and rest on the side of your head. On-ear designs are smaller and usually lighter; they press directly on the ear, which some people notice after a few hours, especially with glasses. Over-ear designs spread the pressure but are bigger, heavier and warmer, and they seal better, which helps passive isolation and ANC.
Which is more comfortable for 8 hours?
It depends on three things:
- Heat. Over-ear cushions enclose the ear. In air-conditioned offices that is usually fine, but on a warm commute or in a home office without air-con, on-ear is cooler.
- Weight. From 152 g (BH74) to 245 g (BH78) is a large spread. Lighter headsets are easier to forget during a long day of calls.
- Pressure points. Glasses wearers often find on-ear cushions press the arms of their glasses into the head. Over-ear can be kinder, as can a headset with softer clamping.
The most comfortable headset is the one your user forgets they are wearing at 5 pm. Weight and heat matter more than spec sheets.
Which isolates noise better?
Over-ear, generally, because the seal is better. The Yealink BH78 adds Adaptive Hybrid ANC that Yealink rates at up to 35 dB, and the Jabra Evolve3 85 Jabra's Advanced ANC. The on-ear models all have ANC too, hybrid on the BH74 and Focus 625 and adaptive on the Evolve3 75, and are enough for most offices. Remember that ANC changes what you hear, not what your callers hear; see Why Your S$400 Headset Still Picks Up Background Noise.
Long-term use: cushions, batteries and hygiene
Over a three- to five-year life, the parts that wear out are ear cushions and batteries. Jabra lists Evolve3 ear cushions and battery packs as spare parts, so an Evolve3 can be refreshed rather than replaced. HP says the Focus 625 has a replaceable battery and swappable ear cushions. For shared or hot desks, plan for spare cushions from day one and, where possible, give each user their own headset. Charging stands help a lot on shared desks: the BH78 includes one, and the BH74, Evolve3 and Focus 625 have stand or pad bundles.
Which should you choose?

- Executives, frequent flyers, glasses wearers who dislike on-ear pressure: over-ear Jabra Evolve3 85 or Yealink BH78.
