Could Your Next Lenovo Laptop Cost More but Offer Less RAM?

It can happen, but on ThinkPads the "less" is rarely the headline RAM number. Industry analysts have warned since late 2025 that laptop makers would trim memory and storage to hold prices, while Gartner said in October 2026 that higher memory and storage costs are "now fully reflected in PC pricing". At SourceIT, every ThinkPad in stock on 3 Nov 2026 has at least 16GB; the 8GB ThinkPads in our catalogue are all older, out-of-stock generations. A current entry model such as the ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 with Core Ultra 5 225U, 16GB and 512GB is S$1,746.40 (listed 3 Nov 2026). Where buyers can get less for more is in the detail: memory that cannot be upgraded, one memory module instead of two, a smaller SSD, or a shorter warranty. Those lines matter more than the RAM figure on the quote.

Why would a laptop maker cut specs instead of raising prices?

Because memory became one of the most expensive parts of the machine. HP told investors in February 2026 that memory had gone from 15–18% to about 35% of its PC bill of materials in a single quarter, and said it had halved the time needed to qualify new components "to accelerate our product configuration changes" (Tom's Hardware, 26 Feb 2026). TrendForce's actual figures show conventional DRAM contract prices rose 45–50% quarter on quarter in 4Q25 and about 93–98% in 1Q26. When one component moves that fast, a manufacturer has two levers: charge more, or put less of it in the box.

Analysts expected both. In December 2025 TrendForce forecast that mid-range laptops would lean towards 8GB instead of 16GB (PCWorld, 15 Dec 2025), and IDC expected "lower average PC memory specifications to conserve inventory" in 2026. On 30 Sep 2026 TrendForce reported that PC makers are also cutting SSD capacities in mainstream models. Prices rose anyway: IDC data reported by The Straits Times (13 Sep 2026) put the average regular laptop in Singapore at S$1,650 in Q2 2026, up 26% year on year, and Reuters reported in August 2026 that Lenovo had raised PC prices twice this year.

Where can a laptop quietly give you less?

Line on the quote What changed in 2025–26 What to check
RAM size TrendForce forecast mid-range laptops sliding back towards 8GB 16GB is the floor for a Copilot+ PC under Microsoft's requirements; every in-stock ThinkPad at SourceIT meets it
Number of memory modules Lenovo's E14 Gen 8 and E16 Gen 4 with Intel "Wildcat Lake" chips have one SO-DIMM slot One module means single-channel memory; ask whether 16GB is 1x16GB or 2x8GB
Memory type More 2025–26 models use soldered or on-package LPDDR5X Soldered memory can never be expanded, so the size you buy is the size you keep
SSD capacity TrendForce (30 Sep 2026): mainstream models getting smaller SSDs Compare storage line by line against your last order, not just the model name
Warranty Lenovo's spec sheets list only 1-year base options for the E14/E16 Rely on the warranty stated on the specific listing or quotation

From TrendForce (via PCWorld, 15 Dec 2025, and TrendForce's 30 Sep 2026 release), Microsoft's Copilot+ PC requirements, and Lenovo PSREF spec sheets for the ThinkPad E14 Gen 7/Gen 8 and E16 Gen 4 Intel (Jul–Sep 2026). SourceIT stock as at 3 Nov 2026.

A higher price with the same RAM figure is not the worst outcome. The worst is paying more for memory you cannot upgrade, configured in a way that slows the machine down.

Is Lenovo cutting RAM on ThinkPads?

We have no evidence of Lenovo cutting base RAM on current ThinkPads, and SourceIT's own stock points the other way. Of the in-stock ThinkPads on 3 Nov 2026, 33 listings have 16GB, 37 have 32GB and one has 64GB. Lenovo's own commentary is about price and mix, not smaller configurations: in May 2026 chairman Yang Yuanqing said the company had "shifted our mix towards premium to improve average unit revenue" (Reuters, 21 May 2026). For ThinkPad buyers, the 2026 squeeze shows up in price rather than in a smaller RAM figure.

The quieter change is in how the memory is built. Lunar Lake models such as the ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 with Core Ultra 5 226V and 16GB (S$1,735, listed 3 Nov 2026) carry their memory on the processor package. Lenovo's spec sheet says it is "not upgradable" and comes only in 16GB or 32GB. That is fast, efficient memory, but a 16GB unit stays a 16GB unit for life. The Arrow Lake E14 Gen 7 models, by contrast, have two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and take up to 64GB. Same model name, very different futures. We explain the difference in DDR5 vs LPDDR5X: Why Your ThinkPad's RAM Type Matters More Than You Think and Your Expensive ThinkPad Has Soldered RAM. Is That a Dealbreaker in 2026?

Why does one memory module matter so much?

A laptop with one memory module runs in single-channel mode, which halves the theoretical memory bandwidth. Integrated graphics and AI features feel that first. Notebookcheck's test of a Dynabook laptop shipped with single-channel memory found its integrated graphics almost 40% slower than the average laptop with the same chip (24 Jan 2026). That is a different laptop from a ThinkPad, but the principle applies to any machine with integrated graphics.

Lenovo's spec sheets show two ways a ThinkPad can end up single-channel. Some 2026 E14 Gen 8 and E16 Gen 4 models use Intel's Wildcat Lake chips and have only one SO-DIMM slot, so they can never run dual-channel. On two-slot models, a 16GB configuration may be built as one 16GB stick, leaving the second slot empty. Our listing for the E14 Gen 7 U5-225U notes that the module split is build-specific, so ask us to confirm before you order. A matching second module fixes it: the G.SKILL Ripjaws 16GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM is S$411.25 (listed 3 Nov 2026).

Is it cheaper to buy 32GB now or add memory later?

On upgradeable models, the factory premium and the cost of a stick are close. On SourceIT's 3 Nov 2026 listings, the ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 with Core Ultra 7 255H, 16GB is S$2,732.88 and the same laptop with 32GB is S$3,256.80, a S$523.92 difference. Adding one 16GB stick to the 16GB model would cost S$411.25, S$112.67 less, but only if the factory build left a slot free, and you take on fitting it. For comparison, the same 16GB-to-32GB step costs S$540.07 on a Dell Pro 5 14 and S$636 on an HP EliteBook 6 G2i on the same day's listings. On soldered models there is no "later", which is why The 32GB RAM Dilemma: Upgrade Your ThinkPad Now or Pay More Later? matters most for X1 Carbon, X13 and Lunar Lake buyers.

How do you stop "cost more, get less" happening to your order?

  • Ask for a full configuration line, not just a model name: CPU, RAM size, module count, memory type, maximum memory, SSD and warranty.
  • Compare against your last purchase line by line. If the price rose, check that the SSD, display and warranty did not fall at the same time.
  • Prefer 2x8GB over 1x16GB on SO-DIMM models, or budget for a matching module.
  • Buy soldered models at the size you will need in year four, because they cannot be expanded.
  • Check how long the quotation is valid. Vendors shortened quote validity during 2026; see Why Your Lenovo ThinkPad Quotation Keeps Changing and Why IT Prices Can Change Overnight.

Frequently asked questions

Are laptop makers really cutting RAM because of memory prices? Analysts expected it. TrendForce forecast in December 2025 that mid-range laptops would lean towards 8GB, and IDC expected lower average memory specifications in 2026. TrendForce later reported PC makers cutting SSD capacities in mainstream models.

Does SourceIT sell any 8GB ThinkPads? Not in stock. On 3 Nov 2026 every in-stock ThinkPad at SourceIT had 16GB, 32GB or 64GB; the 8GB ThinkPads in our catalogue are older generations with no stock.

What is single-channel memory and why should I care? It means the laptop uses one memory channel instead of two, halving theoretical bandwidth. Integrated graphics suffer most; Notebookcheck measured one single-channel laptop's graphics at almost 40% below average for its chip.

Can I upgrade the RAM on a Lunar Lake ThinkPad later? No. Lenovo's spec sheets describe Lunar Lake memory as on-package and "not upgradable", in 16GB or 32GB. Choose the size you will need for the laptop's whole life.

Is it cheaper to add a memory stick myself? Sometimes. On SourceIT's 3 Nov 2026 listings, the E14 Gen 7 Core Ultra 7 255H costs S$523.92 more with 32GB, while a 16GB G.SKILL module is S$411.25. That only works if a slot is free and the model uses SO-DIMMs.
