The TL-FC311A-20 takes a Gigabit copper port to single-mode fibre over one strand, up to 20 km. It is the "A" half of a WDM pair: it transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm, so the far end must be a converter with the mirror-image wavelengths, such as the TL-FC311B-20 that TP-Link names as its counterpart.

Full Gigabit Over a Single Fibre Strand

The TL-FC311A-20 pairs one Gigabit SC fibre port with one 10/100/1000 Mbps Auto MDI/MDIX RJ45 port. Because it uses Wavelength Division Multiplexing, both directions share a single 9/125 µm single-mode strand instead of the usual pair. On leased dark fibre, where cost scales with strand count, or in a full riser where no more fibre can be pulled, that halves what the link consumes while still delivering a full Gigabit port at each end.

Ordering two A units, or an A unit against a 2 km B unit, produces a link that never comes up.
