RBC14 Datasheet: the 48 V Replacement Battery Set for the Matrix-UPS SmartCell-XR

The RBC14 is the genuine APC replacement battery set for the SmartCell-XR battery pack used with APC Matrix-UPS systems. Both the Matrix-UPS 3 kVA and 5 kVA data sheets name it explicitly, in language worth quoting: "If a SmartCell-XR is being used and needs an RBC, then an RBC14 may be purchased."

Schneider's data sheet states in its own words that the RBC14 is "composed of four seperate battery cells", and the Matrix-UPS documentation publishes a nominal battery pack voltage of 48 Vdc. Four cells across a 48 V bus is the whole electrical description of the part.

This is a legacy APC part number. The systems it serves were sold through the late 1990s and 2000s and many are long out of production, but a great deal of that equipment is still running in Singapore plant rooms and comms cabinets, and it still needs batteries. That installed base is exactly why we stock this cartridge.

108 kg: the Heaviest Item in the APC Replacement Battery Range

This is not an exaggeration and it is the single most important thing to know before you order. Schneider publishes a net weight of 108.73 kg and a shipping weight of 112.73 kg, in a carton measuring 508 x 394 x 693 mm.

That is a pallet delivery, a goods lift and a proper lifting plan, not a courier and a trolley. It is also a freight class of its own. Tell us the delivery address, the floor and the access route when you enquire and we will price and schedule the delivery properly. The exhausted cells weigh the same coming out, so plan the removal in the same visit.

If you have seen this part described anywhere at around three kilograms, that figure describes one bare battery block and is wrong by a factor of about thirty-six.

A Frank Note on Matrix-UPS in Singapore

We would rather tell you this up front than sell you the wrong thing. Every Matrix-UPS model Schneider catalogues is designated 208 V / 240 V input, and we could find no 230 V / 50 Hz Matrix-UPS SKU at all. In practice that makes the RBC14 a North American installed-base part. If you are running Matrix gear in Singapore it will almost certainly have arrived here with imported equipment, and that is a perfectly good reason to need this cartridge — but it is not a mainstream local fit, and you should confirm your pack before ordering something this heavy.

Singapore is hard on lead-acid batteries. Ambient temperature sits near the top of the useful band all year, and every few degrees of sustained heat shortens a sealed lead-acid battery's service life measurably. A comms cabinet or riser room that runs warm will age a cartridge faster than an air-conditioned server room will. Plan replacement on the calendar instead of waiting for the UPS to fail its self-test, and keep the unit out of direct sun and clear of the warm-air discharge from whatever it is protecting.

Two deliberate omissions. First, capacity: Schneider's marketing text says 70 Ah per block while its distributor-facing attribute data says 75 Ah, and there is no capacity field on the data sheet to arbitrate between them. We would rather show nothing than pick one. Second, cartridge dimensions: Schneider's data sheet prints 208 x 165 x 259 mm, which is physically impossible for a 108.73 kg four-cell assembly and matches a single battery block almost exactly. We have published the packaged dimensions instead, because those describe the thing that will actually arrive at your door.

On the derived voltage. Schneider states the four-cell construction, and the Matrix-UPS 3 kVA and 5 kVA data sheets and the Matrix UPS user manual all publish a nominal battery pack voltage of 48 Vdc. Four cells at 48 V is the reading that fits every published figure, including the mass: 108.73 kg across four blocks is 27.2 kg each, which is a 12 V 70 to 75 Ah block plus tray and cabling. Schneider publishes no charge time for a replacement cartridge. Recharge time is a property of the UPS that charges it, not of the battery tray, so look it up on your UPS model, not here.

What the RBC14 fits

Note the exclusion in APC's own wording: there is no RBC for a standard SmartCell. The RBC14 is for the XR pack. If your pack is a plain SmartCell, this cartridge is not the answer and we should talk before you order.

Models we will not claim

Reseller listings commonly name the MX3000XR, MX3000XRW, MX5000XR and MX5000XRW against this part. Those follow logically, since XR units take SmartCell-XR packs, but no Schneider document names them against the RBC14 and we do not publish inferences as compatibility. Send us your Matrix-UPS and pack model numbers and we will check with the distributor.

Mains voltage — please read

Every Matrix-UPS SKU Schneider catalogues is 208 V / 240 V input. We found no 230 V / 50 Hz Matrix-UPS model. A Matrix system in Singapore is therefore almost certainly imported equipment, and confirming your pack before ordering matters more than usual with a 108 kg part.

On changing the cells

We do not describe this cartridge as hot-swappable, and if you have read that elsewhere it is worth knowing why we disagree. Schneider's hot-swap guidance is written for Smart-UPS units with user-replaceable batteries; Matrix-UPS is a different range and is outside its scope. The Matrix UPS user manual does say battery packs can be added or replaced at any time, but that is about swapping whole packs, and the same manual warns that when the first pack in the string is replaced the UPS cannot support the load, and instructs you to put the UPS into bypass. Nothing in Schneider's documentation authorises replacing the cells inside a SmartCell-XR while it is live, which is exactly what this cartridge is. Plan a window and follow the guide in the box.

Sealed lead-acid cartridges must not go into general waste in Singapore. Bring the exhausted cartridge back to us with the replacement and we can arrange collection through a licensed recycler, or dispose of it through your own NEA-licensed collector.

How much does the RBC14 actually weigh?
108.73 kg net and 112.73 kg shipping, per Schneider's own data sheet. It is the heaviest item in the APC replacement battery range. Treat it as a palletised delivery with a lifting plan, not a parcel. Any figure around three kilograms you may have seen describes one bare battery block and is wrong by roughly thirty-six times.

Is it 12 V?
No. The cartridge is 48 V. Schneider states that it is composed of four separate battery cells, and the Matrix-UPS documentation publishes a 48 Vdc nominal battery pack voltage. The 12 V figure that appears in Schneider's marketing text is the rating of one block inside the assembly.

Why does the listing not give a capacity in amp-hours?
Because Schneider's own sources disagree. Its marketing text says 70 Ah per block and its distributor attribute data says 75 Ah, and the data sheet has no capacity field to settle it. We would rather publish nothing than publish the wrong one. Ask us and we will put the question to the distributor.

Is it hot-swappable?
We do not claim it, and we think claims to the contrary are misreading a document. Schneider's hot-swap guidance covers Smart-UPS units with user-replaceable batteries; Matrix-UPS is a separate range outside that scope. The Matrix manual's language about replacing packs at any time refers to whole battery packs and comes with an instruction to place the UPS in bypass when the first pack in the string is replaced. Replacing the cells inside a live SmartCell-XR is not something Schneider authorises. Plan a window.
