When MRT Disruptions Hit, Is Your Business Ready for Remote Work?
Your business is ready for an MRT disruption if staff could work productively from home tomorrow morning without first travelling to the office: they have laptops with them, a headset and dock at home, a phone number that follows them, secure access to company systems, and a clear policy on who works where. If any of those depends on being at a desk in the office, a disrupted commute becomes a lost morning.
This is a planning scenario, not a news report. Use the audit below, with store examples including the ASUS ExpertBook B1, HP USB-C 100W G6 Dock, Yealink UH34 Dual MS Teams headset, Yealink MP45 Teams USB Phone and Fortinet FortiGate 50G.
Remote work readiness audit: where do you stand?
| Area | Ready if | Warning sign | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Devices | Staff take laptops home each night | Desktops, or laptops locked in the office | Laptop refresh for roles that must keep working |
| Home kit | Headset and, for heavy users, a dock and monitor at home | Calls on laptop speakers, one small screen all day | Teams-certified headset; USB-C dock |
| Calling | Business numbers ring on laptops and mobiles | Calls only reach desk phones in the office | Teams Phone or another cloud calling system |
| Remote access | VPN and MFA tested with most staff online at once | VPN sized for a handful of users | Firewall and licence sizing; MFA for everyone |
| Files and apps | Work files in cloud storage or reachable over VPN | Files on one office PC or local drive | Move shared files; document which apps need the office |
| Policy and people | Written plan and contact list everyone can reach | Decisions made by group chat on the morning | One-page plan, tested twice a year |
Can your staff take their work home the night before?
The simplest test is whether work leaves the building with the person. For roles that must keep going, a laptop that goes home every night is the foundation of the plan.
The ASUS ExpertBook B1 B1403CVA-NJ1209X (S$1,499.00 as listed on 24 Oct 2026) is a typical example. Its listing gives an Intel Core 7 150U, 16 GB DDR5, a 512 GB SSD, Windows 11 Pro ready for Microsoft Entra ID join and Intune management, TPM 2.0, a fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi 6E, a weight of 1.40 kg and 3 years of onsite next-business-day warranty. Comparisons are in ExpertBook B1 vs P3. Set BitLocker, MFA and remote management before the laptop leaves the office, not after.
Does your business phone number follow your staff?
If customers call a desk phone number that only rings in the office, remote work stops at the reception desk. Microsoft describes Teams Phone as "call control and Private Branch Exchange (PBX) capabilities in the Microsoft 365 cloud", and states it "can be used in all desktop and mobile Teams clients" and on certified third-party devices. Microsoft also notes that a PSTN solution, which provides the phone numbers and access to the public phone network, is separate from the Teams Phone licence, so check both before you plan around it.
Some staff still prefer a handset. The Yealink MP45 Teams USB Phone (S$133.65) connects to the PC over a single USB cable, which also powers it, and has a 4-inch touch screen and a Teams button, according to its listing. Because it works through the PC, it moves home with the laptop. Whether desk phones still earn their place is debated in Are Office Phone Systems Finally Becoming Obsolete?
What home kit do remote workers actually need?
A headset is the cheapest item that makes the biggest difference, because laptop microphones pick up every household noise. The Yealink UH34 Dual MS Teams (S$75.00) is a wired USB-A headset certified for Microsoft Teams, with a noise-cancelling boom microphone, a dedicated Teams button and no battery to charge, per its listing.
For staff who spend full days at home, a dock turns the laptop into a proper desk. The HP USB-C 100W G6 Dock (S$216.00) delivers up to 100 W to the laptop, supports up to three external displays through HDMI 2.1 and two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, and adds Ethernet. The ExpertBook B1 listing confirms both USB-C ports support display output and power delivery. Before buying docks in bulk, run through our docking station compatibility checklist. Can everyone reach company systems securely at the same time?
A VPN that works for three travelling managers may not cope when the whole office connects at 9 am. Check the firewall's VPN throughput, the number of concurrent remote users your licence and configuration allow, and your office internet upload speed, because every remote session comes back through it.
The Fortinet FortiGate 50G combines firewall, SD-WAN and VPN in a desktop unit; Fortinet rates it at 4.4 Gbps of IPsec VPN throughput and 1.1 Gbps of threat protection throughput, according to its listing. It is listed at S$1,168.80 for the hardware only and S$1,819.20 with one year of FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection. Real throughput depends on configuration, so size it against your user count. Turn on multi-factor authentication for remote access too.
Microsoft's Teams network guidance notes that sending Teams traffic through a VPN device can be inefficient because of hair-pinning. Ask whoever manages your VPN whether Teams media should bypass the tunnel. For an SME approach on HPE Networking Instant On, see secure remote access with Aruba Instant On.
What do MOM's flexible work guidelines say?
The Tripartite Guidelines on Flexible Work Arrangement Requests came into effect on 1 December 2024, and TAFEP states that they "set the minimum requirements that all employers are required to abide by." The Guidelines describe three types of flexible work arrangement:
- Flexi-place: employees work from locations other than the usual office, such as telecommuting or working from home.
- Flexi-time: different timings with no change to total hours or workload, such as staggered hours.
- Flexi-load: different workloads with commensurate pay, such as part-time work.
Employers should consider formal requests properly and give a written decision within two months. The Guidelines do not require employers to offer flexible work arrangements, and requests may be rejected on reasonable business grounds such as cost, productivity or feasibility. They deal with how formal requests are made and handled; a continuity plan for a disrupted morning is a separate document, although the same equipment serves both. Read the full Guidelines on the MOM and TAFEP websites.
How do you test remote work readiness?
Run a planned work-from-home day before you need one. Choose a quiet date, ask everyone to work from home, and record what breaks: who could not reach a shared drive, whose calls did not ring, which application only runs on an office PC, and whether the VPN slowed down at 9 am. Fix those items and repeat. The haze version of this checklist is in Haze Season Is a Reminder: Every Office Needs a Plan B., the travelling-executive version in Flight Delayed, Meeting Starting, and the home meeting kit in Stuck at Home During a Thunderstorm? If the office itself loses power, see The Rain Didn't Kill Your Presentation. The Power Outage Did.
Remote work readiness is not a policy document. It is a laptop that went home last night, a number that rings wherever you are, and a VPN that was tested with everyone on it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the first thing to fix for remote work readiness? Make sure staff in essential roles take a laptop home every night. Without the device, every other part of the plan waits.
Do employers in Singapore have to allow work from home? No. MOM's Tripartite Guidelines on Flexible Work Arrangement Requests do not require employers to offer flexible work arrangements, but employers should consider formal requests properly and reply in writing within two months.
Can staff take office calls at home without a desk phone? Yes, with a cloud calling system. Microsoft says Teams Phone can be used in all desktop and mobile Teams clients; it needs a Teams Phone licence and a separate PSTN solution for phone numbers.
How do I know if my VPN can handle everyone working from home? Check the firewall's rated VPN throughput, your concurrent user limit and your office upload speed, then test with most staff connected at once.
Is a wired or wireless headset better for working from home? A wired USB headset never runs out of battery and suits a fixed home desk. Wireless suits people who move around; keep a charger nearby.
How often should we test our remote work plan? Run a planned work-from-home day at least twice a year and after major system changes, then fix what failed.
