The Tapo L920-5 is the multicolour step up from the L900 series: five metres of RGBIC LEDs split into 50 separately addressable colour zones, so one strip shows several colours at once instead of a single shade end to end. A PU coating protects the LEDs, and the strip connects straight to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with no hub.
50 Separately Addressable Colour Zones
This is what separates the L920-5 from a conventional single-colour strip. TP-Link states plainly: “Control 50 separate color zones and bring vibrant joy to your life.” Each zone can hold its own colour, so the strip renders gradients, chases and multi-colour scenes along its length rather than washing the whole run in one shade. On a five-metre reel that works out to a zone every 100 mm — fine enough for smooth transitions behind a television or along a shelf.
PU Coating for Longer Life and Easier Cleaning
The LEDs sit under a polyurethane coating, which TP-Link describes as delivering “easy maintenance and extended lifespan thanks to PU coating”. In practice that means the emitters are not exposed to dust, fingerprints or the occasional wipe down, which matters on a strip installed along a kitchen soffit or a skirting line. TP-Link publishes no IP rating for the L920-5, so SourceIT does not claim one — treat it as an indoor product.
Cut to Length, Stick With 3M Adhesive
TP-Link's instruction is direct: “Cut it to whatever length you want and attach it to any surface with the 3M adhesive.” The five-metre reel therefore follows the run you are lighting instead of dictating it, and needs no clips, channel or drilling for a typical installation. Cut only at the marked points, and measure first — trimmed sections are not re-usable.
Dimmable 1% to 100%, 20.5 W at Full Output
Brightness runs the full 1%–100% range from the Tapo app, which TP-Link notes is via the app and cloud only. Maximum power consumption is 20.5 W, supplied by an adapter rated 220–240 V at 50/60 Hz delivering 12 V DC at 1.5 A — Singapore mains, straight out of the box. Luminous intensity is listed at 2100 mcd maximum, and the operating range is -15 ºC to 40 ºC at 10%–90% RH, non-condensing.
Direct Wi-Fi and Voice Control
The L920-5 speaks IEEE 802.11 b/g/n on 2.4 GHz and joins a secured home network on its own — no Tapo hub, no bridge. TP-Link states you can “use simple voice commands to control your light strip with Alexa or Google Assistant”, and the strip sits in the same Tapo app as the rest of the range, so schedules and scenes can span strips, plugs, bulbs and cameras.

The strip is divided into 50 sections that can each show a different colour at the same time, so it can display gradients and multi-colour effects rather than one colour along its whole length.
How does the L920-5 compare with the L900-5?
The L900-5 lights the whole run in one colour at a time. The L920-5 adds 50 addressable zones and a PU coating, is thicker at 3.0 mm against 1.6 mm, and draws up to 20.5 W against 13.5 W.
Can it be used outdoors?
