The TL-FC311B-20 is the "B" half of TP-Link's 20 km Gigabit WDM pair: it transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, carrying a full Gigabit link over a single single-mode strand. It must be deployed against a converter with the opposite wavelengths — TP-Link names the TL-FC311A-20 as the unit that cooperates with it.

A Gigabit Link on One Strand of Single-Mode Fibre

Wavelength Division Multiplexing puts both directions of traffic on one fibre instead of the usual pair, by sending and receiving on different wavelengths. The TL-FC311B-20 sends at 1310 nm and listens at 1550 nm across 9/125 µm single-mode fibre terminated in SC. The result is a full 10/100/1000 Mbps Auto MDI/MDIX copper port at each end of the run, with half the fibre consumed — which matters most on leased dark fibre and in risers where no more strands can be pulled.

Twenty Kilometres Between Sites

TP-Link publishes a reach of up to 20 km for this model. That covers the realistic span between a head office and a factory, a campus spread over several addresses, or a data centre and a disaster-recovery site within the same region. At those distances copper is not an option at any speed, and the usual alternative is a recurring carrier circuit; a WDM pair turns the link into two small boxes, a strand of glass and a one-off cost.

Order the Matching Half, Not Two of the Same

WDM converters are directional and are sold individually. This is the B unit: 1310 nm transmit, 1550 nm receive. The far end must be an A unit doing the reverse, at the same distance rating. TP-Link states that a terminal device used with the TL-FC311B-20 should send at 1550 nm and receive at 1310 nm, and names the TL-FC311A-20 as one such product. Two B units will not bring a link up, and nor will a 20 km unit against a 2 km one.

Nothing to Configure, Wide Operating Range

The converter is a transparent Layer 1 bridge: no IP address, no web interface, no firmware maintenance, just PWR and Link/Act LEDs on the front. It measures 95 x 73 x 27 mm and runs from a 5 V/0.6 A external adapter. The 0-50 °C operating range is wider than the 0-40 °C typical of TP-Link's desktop switches, which is the difference between working and not in an unventilated riser or a rooftop plant room.
