The TL-SM321A-2 is the "A" half of TP-Link's 2 km bi-directional Gigabit pair. It transmits on 1550 nm and receives on 1310 nm over a single strand of single-mode fibre. TP-Link designs it for on-site gigabit fibre communication — the campus, industrial estate and inter-building distances where 20 km of reach would be paying for range you will never use.

Single-Strand Gigabit for On-Site Runs

A conventional duplex transceiver consumes two fibre strands per link. This module carries both directions on one strand at different wavelengths, separated optically at each end, which halves the fibre a link occupies. In a campus where the inter-building bundle was sized years ago and is now nearly full, that is often the practical difference between adding a link this month and waiting for a new pull. The connector is LC simplex, as the single-strand design requires.

Two Kilometres, Matched to the Job

TP-Link publishes a maximum cable length of 2 km over 9/125 µm single-mode fibre, at the full 1.25 Gbps data rate under IEEE 802.3z. That covers a large campus, an industrial estate or a run between neighbouring blocks. For longer hops the 20 km TL-SM321A and TL-SM321B are the right family; the two families use the same wavelength arrangement but different optical budgets, and should not be mixed on one link.

It Must Be Paired With a TL-SM321B-2

The two ends of a WDM link are not identical. TP-Link specifies that the TL-SM321A-2 works with the TL-SM321B-2 as a pair: the A-2 transmits 1550 nm and receives 1310 nm, the B-2 does the reverse. One of each per link, every time. Two A-2 modules facing each other will not establish a link at all, so when ordering count links rather than ports.

DDM, MSA Compliance and Hot Swapping

Digital Diagnostic Monitoring lets a host switch read live optical transmit and receive power, temperature and supply voltage, which turns a slowly degrading connector or splice into a visible trend. The module is SFP-MSA compliant and hot-swappable, so it seats in any standard Gigabit SFP cage and can be changed without taking the switch out of service. It draws 3.3 V from the host and measures 55.4 x 14.6 x 12.9 mm.
