Read This First: Microsoft Retired Azure SQL Edge on 30 September 2025
Azure SQL Edge is retired. Microsoft's own retirement banner, carried at the top of every surviving Azure SQL Edge documentation page, reads: “Azure SQL Edge is retired as of September 30, 2025.” Microsoft's lifecycle announcement for Azure product retirements in September 2025 lists Azure SQL Edge with the same date.
There is further structural evidence: Microsoft has moved the entire Azure SQL Edge documentation set under learn.microsoft.com/previous-versions/. Microsoft only relocates documentation there for discontinued products.

What Azure SQL Edge Was
In Microsoft's words, Azure SQL Edge was “an optimized relational database engine geared for IoT and IoT Edge deployments. It provides capabilities to create a high-performance data storage and processing layer for IoT applications and solutions, with support for streaming, processing, and analyzing relational and nonrelational data such as JSON, graph, and time-series data.”
It was delivered as a container — either as a module for Azure IoT Edge in a connected deployment, or pulled from Docker Hub and run standalone or on Kubernetes in a disconnected one. Two editions existed, Developer and production, which Microsoft described as having “identical feature sets” and differing “only in usage rights and resource allocation”.
One detail worth correcting, because older listings still claim otherwise: Microsoft's own features page states “Azure SQL Edge no longer supports the ARM64 platform.” It required an x86 64-bit processor.
What Microsoft Does Not Publish, and What We Will Not Invent
Microsoft does not publish how Azure SQL Edge was licensed or purchased. The surviving overview and features pages describe editions and resource limits but say nothing about an annual subscription term, a purchase mechanism or a price. This page therefore states no licensing terms for this SKU.
Microsoft does not name a replacement product. The lifecycle announcement links to migration guidance, but that target is a client-side application that returns no readable content, so this page does not cite it.

The Retirement: What Microsoft Published, and What It Did Not
The banner. Every surviving Azure SQL Edge documentation page carries the same line at the top: “Azure SQL Edge is retired as of September 30, 2025. For more information and migration options, see the Retirement notice.”
The lifecycle announcement. Microsoft's list of Azure product retirements for September 2025 includes Azure SQL Edge with a retirement date of 30 September 2025.
The documentation move. The whole documentation set now sits under learn.microsoft.com/previous-versions/azure/azure-sql-edge/. That relocation is itself Microsoft's signal that a product is discontinued.

What SQL Server 2025 Now Does Centrally
Worth knowing when you scope the replacement: SQL Server 2025 adds mirroring into Microsoft Fabric — Microsoft: “continuously replicate data to Microsoft Fabric from SQL Server 2025 on-premises” — native parquet, Delta and CSV support without PolyBase services, change event streaming to Azure Event Hubs or Fabric Eventstream, and in-engine vector and AI functions. Several architectures that once pushed processing to the edge now pull it back to the centre.

The Developer edition was capped at 4 cores and 32 GB of memory and licensed for development only; the production edition at 8 cores and 64 GB. Microsoft described the feature sets as identical.
