Mounting and orientation

The stand gives 110 mm of height travel, -5° to 20° tilt and 15° swivel each way. BenQ confirms the RD280U does not pivot into portrait — which matters less than usual here, because the 3:2 panel is already tall in landscape. For an arm or wall bracket the monitor uses the standard 100 x 100 mm VESA pattern, but at 7.5 kg without the base it needs an arm rated for that weight; check the specification on lighter gas-spring models before ordering.

Driving it at full resolution

3840 x 2560 at 60Hz needs a host that can output that mode. DisplayPort 1.4 and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode both carry it. The HDMI 2.0 input is available for a second machine. Because the panel is 164 PPI, plan on running the operating system's display scaling rather than at 100% — macOS and current Windows builds both handle this cleanly, and the result is desktop area with laptop-class text sharpness.

KVM switch and two machines

The KVM switch lets one keyboard and mouse control two connected computers, switching video and USB peripherals together. Connect the first machine over USB-C and the second over HDMI or DisplayPort plus the USB Type-B upstream port, and the monitor hands the peripherals to whichever source is active. This is the reason many developers choose this panel: a laptop and a build or test machine on one desk without a separate KVM box.

USB-C power and daisy chaining

The USB-C port delivers 90 W, which covers a 16-inch laptop or a mobile workstation under real load rather than just idling. USB-C out with MST lets a second display run from this monitor instead of the host, keeping the laptop end to one cable. MST behaviour depends on the graphics driver, so verify on your machine before relying on it. Three downstream USB Type-A ports and a downstream USB-C at 7.5 W handle keyboard, mouse, drives and a phone.

How do the four RD models differ — RD270Q, RD280U, RD280UG and RD320U?

The RD270Q is 27 inches, 2560 x 1440 QHD in 16:9 at 109 PPI, and the quickest at 144Hz. This RD280U and the RD280UG are both 28.2-inch 4K+ panels at 3840 x 2560 in a tall 3:2 shape and 164 PPI: the RD280U runs 60Hz with 1200:1 contrast and HDMI 2.0, the RD280UG runs 120Hz with 2000:1 contrast, HDMI 2.1, FreeSync Premium, pivot and PIP/PBP. The RD320U is 31.5 inches, 3840 x 2160 4K in 16:9 at 140 PPI and 60Hz, with 98% P3.

What is the point of a 3:2 aspect ratio for coding?

Code is a vertical medium. A 3:2 panel at 3840 x 2560 gives 2560 pixels of height where a 4K 16:9 screen gives 2160 — around 18% more vertical space on a similarly sized display. In practice that is more lines of a file, a taller terminal, and less scrolling through a stack trace. It is the single biggest reason developers choose this panel over a conventional 16:9 4K monitor.

What does MoonHalo do?

MoonHalo is a backlight ring on the rear of the monitor that illuminates the wall behind it. Raising the ambient light level behind a bright screen reduces the contrast your eyes have to keep adapting to in a dark room, which is a major contributor to fatigue during late sessions. BenQ specifies MoonHalo on the RD280U, RD280UG and RD320U — the RD270Q does not have it.

Does the RD280U rotate into portrait?

No. BenQ states the RD280U offers swivel, tilt and height adjustment but no pivot. The 3:2 panel is already unusually tall in landscape, which is the point of the design. If portrait rotation is a requirement, the RD280UG adds a 90° pivot with Auto Pivot.

How does the KVM switch work?

Connect two computers to the monitor and one keyboard and mouse to its USB ports. Switching the video input hands the peripherals to that machine as well, so a work laptop and a build or test box share a single desk setup without a separate KVM box. Use the USB-C connection for one machine and HDMI or DisplayPort with the USB Type-B upstream cable for the other.

Will the 90 W USB-C port charge a 16-inch laptop?

Yes, for most machines. 90 W covers a 16-inch developer laptop or a mobile workstation under real working load, not just at idle, and carries video and data over the same cable. A machine with a very high-power discrete GPU may still draw more during sustained rendering.

What is the Nano Matte coating, and why does it matter for code?

It diffuses reflections from ceiling lights and glass partitions far more effectively than the standard matte film used on office monitors, and carries a TÜV Reflection Free certification. On a screen displaying small monospaced text for eight hours a day, that is the difference between reading comfortably and constantly repositioning to avoid a reflection.
