Microsoft Teams Certified vs Regular Bluetooth Headsets: Are You Paying for a Logo?

You are not just paying for a logo. "Certified for Microsoft Teams" means Microsoft has tested the headset for wideband audio without echo or distortion, plug-and-play setup and working call controls, and some features, such as mute that stays in sync between Teams and the headset, only work on certified devices. Certified headsets also usually come with a dedicated USB adapter and vendor management tools for IT. Certification is not expensive: at SourceIT the certified Logitech Zone 305 MS is S$85.00 and the Yealink BH74 MS S$186.30, prices as listed on 25 Oct 2026. What you should not do is pay a premium for certification you will never use, for example on a Zoom-only estate.

Certified vs regular Bluetooth headset: what's different?

Feature Teams certified headset Regular Bluetooth headset
Audio testing Microsoft tests for wideband audio with no echo, distortion or excessive glitches Vendor's own testing only
Setup Plug and play with no extra configuration (Microsoft) Usually works, but may need manual device selection
Call controls Answer/hang up, mute/unmute and volume tested with Teams Basic controls may or may not map to Teams
Mute sync Mute status syncs from Teams to the headset Microsoft says this works only with certified peripherals
Teams button On MS variants, opens Teams and joins meetings None
PC connection Usually a dedicated USB adapter in the box Laptop's built-in Bluetooth
Open-office microphone tier Available on some models Not tested
Firmware and fleet tools Vendor tools for settings and firmware Consumer app, if any

Certification descriptions from Microsoft Learn, "Certified personal peripherals" and "Teams certified Bluetooth devices".

What does Microsoft actually test?

Microsoft's personal peripherals programme says certified devices "work (plug & play) with no extra configuration required, and offer call control with Microsoft Teams". Core audio devices are tested for basic call control on a PC or Mac (answer and hang up, mute and unmute, volume) and for "wide-band audio with no echo, distortion, or excessive glitches". Microsoft adds that all certified devices support firmware updates to deliver new features and performance improvements, and that certification involves third-party testing plus internal testing before it is awarded.

Open Office and native Bluetooth: the extra tiers

Two higher designations are worth knowing:

  • Premium Microphone for Open Office. Microsoft says headsets with this designation "pick up the voice of the headset user but don't transmit the sound of their neighbors". For open-plan floors, this is the rating that matters. Examples at SourceIT include the Yealink BH74 MS, the Jabra Evolve3 65 and the Logitech Zone Wireless 2, each per its vendor.
  • Native Bluetooth certification. Microsoft tests audio, call control and Teams button integration with and without the USB dongle, on Windows PCs and the Teams desktop client. Logitech's Zone Wireless 2 was the first headset certified this way, in January 2025; SourceIT lists a native Bluetooth version at S$265.00. Microsoft notes the programme currently covers Classic Bluetooth, not LE Audio, and that some users in crowded radio environments should keep using the dongle.
The logo is a test result. The useful question is which tests your users need passed.

Why the USB adapter matters

A laptop's built-in Bluetooth radio is shared with the mouse, keyboard and phone, and when a classic Bluetooth headset's microphone is in use, it typically switches to the hands-free profile, which lowers audio quality. Business headset makers supply a pre-paired USB adapter, such as Jabra's Link 390, HP Poly's BT700 or Yealink's BT51, so the headset has its own radio link to the PC. Windows 11 is adding higher-quality LE Audio calling on compatible hardware, but most fleets are not there yet. Practical fixes are in Why Your Expensive Bluetooth Headset Sounds Terrible on Teams.

Enterprise device management

Certified business headsets are usually managed with the vendor's own software rather than through Teams itself: Jabra Direct and Jabra Xpress, Logitech's Logi Tune and Sync, HP's Poly software, EPOS's management tools and Yealink's device management platform. These let IT push firmware, lock settings and keep an inventory. Consumer headphones generally offer only a personal phone app.

MS or UC variant?

Many business headsets come in two versions with identical hardware. MS variants add a dedicated Teams button and Teams-tuned firmware; UC variants are tuned for Zoom, Google Meet, Webex and other platforms. If your company runs Microsoft 365, buy MS. If it runs Zoom, buy UC; you will not miss the Teams button, and that is the one case where you would be paying for a logo you do not use.
