The Poly ATA 400 is a single-port analog telephone adapter that brings one legacy analog device onto a modern Open SIP VoIP phone system. It presents one FXS voice port for an analog phone, fax machine, paging amplifier or emergency phone, connects to the network over a single RJ-45 port, and registers to standards-compliant IP PBX and hosted voice platforms using SIPv2. Keep Fax, Lift Phones and Paging Working After a VoIP Migration
This is the problem the ATA 400 exists to solve. When a Singapore site moves off legacy copper or ISDN onto SIP trunks, the desk phones are easy — but the fax machine in accounts, the emergency phone in the lift, the door intercom and the paging amplifier are all analog and cannot register to a SIP platform on their own. One ATA 400 per device brings each of them across without replacing working hardware.

What an ATA Does — and Does Not Do
An analog telephone adapter converts a traditional analog device into a SIP endpoint. It is the standard way to keep a fax machine, a lift emergency phone, a paging amplifier, a door intercom, a franking machine or an EFTPOS terminal working after a site migrates from PSTN or ISDN lines to VoIP — a common requirement in Singapore following the retirement of legacy copper services. It does not add analog trunk (FXO) ports: the ATA presents FXS ports for devices, not lines for a PBX.

What is the difference between the ATA 400 and the ATA 402?
Port count. The ATA 400 has one FXS port for a single analog device; the ATA 402 has two, letting one adapter serve two independent analog devices such as a fax machine and a lift phone. The 402 is also slightly larger (9.6 x 9.6 x 2.2 cm and 85 g against 8.8 x 8.8 x 2.6 cm and 65 g). Choose the 400 for a single device; the 402 is usually the better value where two ports are needed at one location.
What can I connect to the FXS port?
Any standard analog telephony device: an analog desk phone, a fax machine, a paging amplifier, a lift or car-park emergency phone, a door intercom, an alarm dialler, a franking machine or an EFTPOS terminal. The port presents line voltage and dial tone to the device, exactly as a legacy exchange line would.
Will fax work reliably over VoIP with this adapter?
The ATA 400 supports T.38 fax relay as well as SIP-based VoIP, which is the mechanism designed for carrying fax over IP. Do I need a licence, a server or a room PC to use it?
