What Office LTSC Standard 2024 is, and who Microsoft says should buy it
Microsoft's own description of the Long-Term Servicing Channel is that Office LTSC 2024 is "designed for use in highly regulated or restricted environments that can't take feature updates". Microsoft is explicit that it is not the mainstream choice: it states that Microsoft 365 Apps "includes all Office LTSC 2024 features and many more that Office LTSC 2024 doesn't include", and that LTSC users "don't have access to real-time collaboration, AI-driven automation, or advanced security and compliance tools tailored for a hybrid work environment". Buy LTSC because you need a fixed, unchanging build on a device that cannot take feature updates — not because it looks like the cheaper way to get Office.
What is in the suite
Microsoft publishes the applications in Office LTSC Standard 2024 as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. The difference between Standard and Professional Plus is Access, which Professional Plus includes and this suite does not. Microsoft publishes Access as Windows only. If you need Access, Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is the suite; if you do not, this is the one to buy and the saving is real. Publisher is NOT included. Microsoft states directly that "Microsoft Publisher is not included with Office LTSC 2024. This change is due to the planned retirement of Publisher, which will no longer be supported after October 2026." Any listing or reseller telling you Publisher ships with Office LTSC 2024 is wrong.
The date that decides this purchase
Office LTSC 2024 is on the Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft published its release on 18 September 2024, and publishes that "Office LTSC 2024 will go out of support on October 9, 2029". Microsoft's wording on the term is explicit: "Office LTSC 2024, including Project and Visio, receive five years of Mainstream Support. After this period, there will be no Extended Support for these products." There is no extended phase to fall back on — that date is the end, not the beginning of a second period. Two renderings of that date exist in Microsoft's own material and we print both rather than pick one: Microsoft's Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ words it "October 9, 2029", while Microsoft's lifecycle database renders the same end date as 10 October 2029, the same moment expressed in a different timezone. Either way it is the second week of October 2029.
How it is licensed and how it updates
Microsoft's licensing guidance for Office LTSC is that the software is licensed on a per-device basis, with each licence assigned to a single physical device, as a perpetual desktop-application licence rather than a subscription. Microsoft publishes that Office LTSC 2024 "doesn't receive feature updates after launch". It receives servicing and security updates through the PerpetualVL2024 update channel until the published end-of-support date, and nothing else. The build you install in year one is the build you have in year five.
Getting it onto machines
Microsoft publishes that Office LTSC 2024, including Project and Visio, is configured and deployed with the Office Deployment Tool, and that installing directly from the Office CDN requires the least administrative effort and is Microsoft's recommendation. Microsoft Configuration Manager (current branch) is also supported. This is not a consumer double-click installer — plan for an administrator to build a configuration file. Is Publisher included?

Is Access included?
No. Microsoft publishes Access under Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 only, and as Windows only.
How is this different from Microsoft 365 Apps?
Microsoft answers this directly: Microsoft 365 Apps "includes all Office LTSC 2024 features and many more that Office LTSC 2024 doesn't include", and LTSC "doesn't receive feature updates after launch". LTSC is for environments that cannot take feature updates. If yours can, Microsoft's own guidance points to the subscription.
Can I just download and install it like consumer Office?
No. Microsoft publishes that Office LTSC 2024 is deployed with the Office Deployment Tool, or with Microsoft Configuration Manager. Budget for an administrator to build a configuration file, or ask us to help.
Should I buy the 2021 version instead — it is cheaper?
We would advise against it, and here is the arithmetic. Microsoft publishes Office LTSC 2021 as reaching end of support in October 2026. Office LTSC 2024 runs to October 2029. A cheaper 2021 licence buys you three fewer years of security updates.
Is this a subscription? Will it expire?
No, it is a one-time purchase. There is no annual renewal and the software does not stop working on a renewal date, because there is no renewal date. What it does have is an end-of-support date: Microsoft publishes end of support for Office LTSC 2024 as 9 October 2029, with no Extended Support after it. Two renderings of that date exist in Microsoft's own material and we print both rather than pick one: Microsoft's Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ words it "October 9, 2029", while Microsoft's lifecycle database renders the same end date as 10 October 2029, the same moment expressed in a different timezone. Either way it is the second week of October 2029. After that the software keeps running but Microsoft stops issuing security updates for it.
Is it a "lifetime licence"?
Microsoft does not use the word "lifetime" for these products and neither do we. Microsoft's own wording is "one-time purchase", and it publishes a dated end of support. The software does not stop working on that date, but Microsoft stops issuing security updates for it, which for most businesses is the date that actually matters.
Does it come with a warranty?
This is a software licence, not hardware. It carries no hardware warranty, no return-to-base service and no replacement entitlement, because there is no hardware to replace. What it carries is the licence itself, Microsoft's support for the product while it remains in support, and our own local support in Singapore.
Should I buy this or a Microsoft 365 subscription instead?
They are genuinely different products and the honest answer depends on what you need. A one-time purchase gets you the desktop applications on the device, frozen at the 2024 feature set, with no ongoing cost. Microsoft 365 gets you continuously updated applications plus the cloud services — mailbox, cloud storage, Teams — for a recurring fee. Microsoft's own comparison states that the one-time purchase "does not include any of the services that come with a Microsoft 365 subscription" and that "Security updates are included, but you won't get any new features. Upgrades to major releases aren't included." If nobody in your organisation will notice a frozen feature set and you want to stop paying, buy this. If you need the mailbox, the storage and the collaboration, buy the subscription. Ask us and we will price both honestly.
