What Excel for Mac LTSC 2024 is
Excel for Mac LTSC 2024 is the standalone, volume-licensed, perpetual edition of Excel for macOS. One-time purchase, licensed per device, frozen at its 2024 feature set. Microsoft's own description of the Long-Term Servicing Channel is that Office LTSC 2024 is "designed for use in highly regulated or restricted environments that can't take feature updates". Microsoft is explicit that it is not the mainstream choice: it states that Microsoft 365 Apps "includes all Office LTSC 2024 features and many more that Office LTSC 2024 doesn't include", and that LTSC users "don't have access to real-time collaboration, AI-driven automation, or advanced security and compliance tools tailored for a hybrid work environment". Buy LTSC because you need a fixed, unchanging build on a device that cannot take feature updates — not because it looks like the cheaper way to get Office.
What it is not
This is the standalone application rather than a suite. If you need more than one of the Office applications, compare the price of individual licences against Office LTSC Standard 2024, which carries Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote together — for two or more applications the suite is usually the cheaper answer. The date that decides this purchase
Office LTSC 2024 is on the Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft published its release on 18 September 2024, and publishes that "Office LTSC 2024 will go out of support on October 9, 2029". Microsoft's wording on the term is explicit: "Office LTSC 2024, including Project and Visio, receive five years of Mainstream Support. After this period, there will be no Extended Support for these products." There is no extended phase to fall back on — that date is the end, not the beginning of a second period. Two renderings of that date exist in Microsoft's own material and we print both rather than pick one: Microsoft's Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ words it "October 9, 2029", while Microsoft's lifecycle database renders the same end date as 10 October 2029, the same moment expressed in a different timezone. Either way it is the second week of October 2029.
How it updates, and what it cannot do
Microsoft publishes that Office LTSC 2024 "doesn't receive feature updates after launch". It receives servicing and security updates through the PerpetualVL2024 update channel until the published end-of-support date, and nothing else. The build you install in year one is the build you have in year five. Microsoft states that Office LTSC 2024 "doesn't include the latest cloud-backed features and functionality available in Microsoft 365 Apps" and that users "don't have access to real-time collaboration, AI-driven automation, or advanced security and compliance tools tailored for a hybrid work environment". Treat any cloud-dependent or AI feature you have seen in a Microsoft 365 version as absent here unless Microsoft publishes otherwise for this release.
Getting it onto machines
Microsoft publishes that Office LTSC 2024, including Project and Visio, is configured and deployed with the Office Deployment Tool, and that installing directly from the Office CDN requires the least administrative effort and is Microsoft's recommendation. Microsoft Configuration Manager (current branch) is also supported. This is not a consumer double-click installer — plan for an administrator to build a configuration file. Should I buy this or a Microsoft 365 subscription instead?
They are genuinely different products and the honest answer depends on what you need. A one-time purchase gets you the desktop applications on the device, frozen at the 2024 feature set, with no ongoing cost. Microsoft 365 gets you continuously updated applications plus the cloud services — mailbox, cloud storage, Teams — for a recurring fee. Microsoft's own comparison states that the one-time purchase "does not include any of the services that come with a Microsoft 365 subscription" and that "Security updates are included, but you won't get any new features. Upgrades to major releases aren't included." If nobody in your organisation will notice a frozen feature set and you want to stop paying, buy this. If you need the mailbox, the storage and the collaboration, buy the subscription. Ask us and we will price both honestly.
