One question settles it: do you have legitimate Windows Server 2019 media and a way to activate it? If yes, you already have everything you need — the right to run 2019 came with your 2022 licence and you should not buy this kit. If no, and you hold an OEM or ROK 2022 licence, this kit is how you get them.

The second question is whether you should be downgrading at all. It is the right call when a specific application, driver or vendor support contract requires 2019 and will not certify 2022. It is the wrong call if it is simply familiarity — you would be deliberately choosing a platform that is already out of mainstream support and whose extended support ends in January 2029, and you would be doing the migration twice. Why we would rather you asked than guessed. Server licensing is the one area of this catalogue where a wrong purchase is not simply an exchange — an under-licensed server is a compliance exposure that surfaces at audit, often years later and at a much larger number than the licence would have cost. Send us the server model, the processor configuration, the number of virtual machines you intend to run and the number of people or devices that will connect, and we will work out the exact licence set with you before anything is ordered. It costs you nothing and it is the part of this transaction where we can be most useful.

On availability: Windows Server 2022 is past Lenovo's last shipment date

Lenovo Press states plainly that the last shipment of Windows Server 2022 was 30 September 2025. What you are buying now is channel stock. That is not a reason to avoid it — a 2022 licence remains perfectly valid and Microsoft supports the product until 15 October 2031 under extended support — but it does mean two things. First, supply is finite: if you are planning a rollout, tell us the quantity early. Second, if you are buying for a project that has not started yet, Windows Server 2025 may be the better purchase, and its CALs cover 2022 and earlier while 2022 CALs do not cover 2025. Ask us and we will price both so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.

What this kit does not change. Your core licence count, your virtual machine entitlement and your CAL obligation all stay exactly as the 2022 licence sets them. Downgrading is not a way to reduce what you owe — Microsoft is explicit that the downgrade option "doesn't increase permissible instance counts or reduce required core licenses".

Lenovo Press LP1079 is the only Lenovo document covering this part number — there is no PSREF entry for it. The downgrade right itself, and the condition that Microsoft must still support the earlier version, come from Microsoft's OEM licence terms and Product Terms. The support dates are from Microsoft's published lifecycle pages, both linked above.

Do I need this if I already have a Windows Server 2022 licence?

Only if you lack 2019 media and an activation key. The right to run 2019 in place of 2022 already comes with your licence. This kit supplies the media and the key, which OEM and ROK customers usually cannot get any other way. Volume-licensing customers can download both and need no kit. Tell us how you acquired your licence and we will tell you honestly whether to buy this.

Is this a licence?

No. It is installation media plus an activation key. It grants no additional entitlement — no extra virtual machines, no reduction in the core licences you owe. Your Windows Server 2022 Standard licence remains the licence, and its rules continue to apply.

Do my Windows Server 2022 CALs still work after downgrading?

Yes. A CAL covers its own version and every earlier one, so 2022 CALs cover a 2019 server. No additional CAL purchase is needed.

Does downgrading reduce how many core licences I need?

No. Microsoft is explicit that the downgrade option does not increase permissible instance counts or reduce required core licences. Every physical core still needs licensing, with the same 8-per-processor and 16-per-server minimums, and Standard still grants two virtual machines per full set.

How long will Windows Server 2019 be supported?

Mainstream support ended on 10 January 2024; extended support ends on 10 January 2029. Microsoft's downgrade right is conditional on it still supporting the earlier version, so treat this as a compatibility bridge with a deadline rather than a destination.

Can I downgrade to Windows Server 2016 instead?

Yes — that is a different kit, Lenovo part 7S05006PWW. Lenovo also publishes separate kits for Datacenter and Essentials editions. Tell us the edition you hold and the version you need and we will quote the right one.

Should I be downgrading at all?

Only if something specific requires it — an application, a driver, a backup agent or a vendor support contract certified for 2019 and not for 2022. If the reason is familiarity rather than a hard requirement, you would be choosing a platform already out of mainstream support and committing yourself to migrating twice.
