Five User CALs — the Licence to Access a Server You Have Already Licensed
A Client Access Licence is the second half of Windows Server licensing and the half people forget. The server licence covers the software running on the hardware. This covers people connecting to it. Microsoft's rule is unambiguous: all server software access requires CALs. A server with correct core licensing and no CALs is not a compliant deployment.
These Are User CALs, Not Device CALs
A User CAL lets one named person connect from any number of devices — desk PC, laptop, phone, home machine. A Device CAL lets one device be used by any number of people, which suits shift work and shared terminals. Lenovo's part numbers for the two differ by a single character: this one, 7S05007XWW, is 5 User; 7S05007WWW is 5 Device. Count your people and count your devices, and buy whichever number is lower.
They Work Backwards, Not Forwards
This is the version rule that catches people out. A Windows Server 2022 CAL covers access to Windows Server 2022 and every earlier version — 2019, 2016 and so on. It does not cover Windows Server 2025. If there is any chance of moving to 2025 within the life of these licences, buy 2025 CALs instead and they will cover your 2022 servers too. Almost Everyone Needs One
The exemptions Microsoft publishes are narrow: up to two people for server administration only, access coming from another licensed server, certain web and high-performance-computing workloads, and a physical host used solely to run virtual machines. There is no blanket exemption for external or internet users — for those you buy either CALs or a Windows Server External Connector, which is a Microsoft volume purchase Lenovo does not stock.

Compatibility & Fit
The mistake this SKU exists to prevent
The commonest licensing error we see is a correctly specified server with no CALs at all. It is easy to make: the server licence feels like the purchase, the CAL feels like an add-on, and nothing stops the server working without them. But Microsoft's position is that all access requires a CAL, and an audit counts users, not intentions.
How to count. Every person or device that touches the server needs a licence — opening a file share, printing to a shared printer, authenticating against Active Directory, running a line-of-business application whose database sits on that server. It is not only people who log in interactively. If you have twenty staff, you need twenty User CALs, or as many Device CALs as there are devices, whichever is fewer.
Remote Desktop needs a second licence. If people connect to the server to run applications on it rather than to reach files on it, Microsoft requires a Windows Server CAL and a Remote Desktop Services CAL for each of them. RDS CALs are a separate line. Tell us if Remote Desktop is part of the plan and we will include them in the quote rather than let it surface later.
Why we would rather you asked than guessed. Server licensing is the one area of this catalogue where a wrong purchase is not simply an exchange — an under-licensed server is a compliance exposure that surfaces at audit, often years later and at a much larger number than the licence would have cost. Send us the server model, the processor configuration, the number of virtual machines you intend to run and the number of people or devices that will connect, and we will work out the exact licence set with you before anything is ordered. It costs you nothing and it is the part of this transaction where we can be most useful.
On availability: Windows Server 2022 is past Lenovo's last shipment date
Lenovo Press states plainly that the last shipment of Windows Server 2022 was 30 September 2025. What you are buying now is channel stock. That is not a reason to avoid it — a 2022 licence remains perfectly valid and Microsoft supports the product until 15 October 2031 under extended support — but it does mean two things. First, supply is finite: if you are planning a rollout, tell us the quantity early. Second, if you are buying for a project that has not started yet, Windows Server 2025 may be the better purchase, and its CALs cover 2022 and earlier while 2022 CALs do not cover 2025. If you have fewer than 25 users, ask about Essentials. Windows Server Essentials requires no CALs at all. For a small business it can work out considerably cheaper than Standard plus a stack of CALs, with the trade-off of a user ceiling and a reduced feature set. It is worth ten minutes of conversation before you commit to the CAL route.

Do I really need CALs if I have already bought the server licence?

How many do I need?

Will these work with Windows Server 2025?

What about people connecting from outside the company?
There is no blanket exemption for external or internet users. Microsoft gives two compliant routes: buy a CAL for each external user, or buy a Windows Server External Connector, which licenses unlimited external users against a single server. Lenovo publishes no External Connector part number — it is a Microsoft volume purchase, and we can advise on which route is cheaper for your numbers.
Do I need anything extra for Remote Desktop?
Yes. Microsoft requires a Windows Server CAL and a Remote Desktop Services CAL for each user or device using Remote Desktop. RDS CALs are a separate purchase. Tell us if Remote Desktop is in scope and we will quote them together.
Is there a way to avoid CALs entirely?
