Philips 32B1U3900: Is a 32-Inch 4K Monitor the Ultimate Office Upgrade?

For document-heavy work, it comes close, as long as you do not need a fast refresh rate or verified colour accuracy. The Philips 32B1U3900 pairs a 31.5-inch 4K VA panel with a USB-C dock that charges a laptop at up to 90 W, adds a four-port USB hub and provides gigabit Ethernet. At about 140 pixels per inch it is sharper than a 27-inch QHD monitor yet large enough to use at lower scaling, which gives more usable space for spreadsheets, side-by-side documents and drawings. Its limits are a 60Hz refresh rate and, as a VA panel, narrower viewing angles than IPS. We have not tested this unit ourselves and found no independent measured review, so this assessment uses Philips' official leaflet. At SourceIT the 32B1U3900 is S$439.20 (listed 30 Oct 2026).

Why 32 inches at 4K?

A 27-inch 4K monitor is very sharp, but most people run it at 150% scaling, which gives roughly the same working area as a 27-inch QHD screen. A 31.5-inch 4K panel is physically larger, so many users can run it at 125% scaling and still read comfortably. The result is more windows on screen at once: a spreadsheet beside a report, two documents side by side, or a CAD drawing with toolbars to spare. For details on scaling, see Your 4K Monitor Might Be Making Work Harder.

The size has a cost. At normal desk distances of 50 to 100 cm, which OSHA recommends, a 32-inch screen fills more of your field of view, so the edges need more head movement. On shallow desks, the screen can end up closer than is comfortable. Our monitor size guide covers desk depth and viewing distance.

Who is it for?

  • Finance teams working in wide spreadsheets with many columns.
  • Engineers and architects who want a large, sharp canvas for drawings and documentation.
  • Executives who replace two smaller screens with one larger one.
  • Laptop users who want a single-cable desk with charging, USB and Ethernet.
One large, sharp screen can do the work of two smaller ones without the bezel in the middle.

What are the trade-offs?

  • 60Hz refresh rate. Fine for documents, less smooth for scrolling than newer 100 to 120Hz office monitors.
  • VA panel. VA gives higher contrast (3,500:1 listed against about 1,000:1 for typical IPS) and deeper blacks, but colours can shift more when viewed off-axis. Usually acceptable for one person sitting in front of it.
  • Colour work. A wide native gamut with no published calibration report is not a substitute for a calibrated creator monitor; see ASUS ProArt Monitors: Professional Colour Accuracy or Expensive Marketing?
  • No daisy-chain or KVM listed, so a second screen or second computer needs another connection.
  • Power. At 34.8 W typical it draws more than smaller business monitors such as the 24B2U3301 (13.5 W).
