PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

ASUS ROG NUC 16 (RNUC16JNK9X289A3) - Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus / RTX 5080 / 32GB DDR5 / 1TB SSD / Windows 11 Home - 3 Years Onsite Local Warranty

The ROG NUC 16 puts an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with 16GB of GDDR7 and a 24-core Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus into a 3.2 kg chassis measuring 282.5 × 189.5 × 56.5 mm - roughly the footprint of an A4 sheet and about as thick as two paperbacks. It stands vertically, lies flat, or hides behind a monitor, and a built-in G-sensor detects which way up it is and retunes the fan curve to match.

This is the top RTX 5080 configuration in the range: 32GB of DDR5-6400 in dual channel, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD with a second M.2 slot free, and 2.5Gb Ethernet alongside Intel Killer Wi-Fi 7. It ships with Windows 11 Home and a 3-year onsite local warranty through SourceIT.

RTX 5080 Laptop GPU - the real AI engine in this machine

The RTX 5080 Laptop GPU carries 16GB of GDDR7 and ASUS rates it at 1,334 AI TOPS with fifth-generation Tensor Cores, FP4 support and DLSS 4.5. That figure is worth sitting with, because it is where essentially all of this system's AI capability lives. It drives 1440p ultra and 4K high gaming with ray tracing on, and it runs local LLM inference, generative image work and AI-assisted video pipelines at a speed no integrated graphics part approaches. If you are buying this box to run models locally, you are buying it for the GPU.

Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus - 24 cores, and a caveat on the NPU

Eight performance cores and sixteen efficient cores, 24 threads total, 5.5 GHz maximum turbo, 36MB Intel Smart Cache, built on TSMC N3B. Note the thread count: 24 cores yield 24 threads, because the P-cores in this generation do not run Hyper-Threading. Software licensed or scheduled per thread should be sized against 24, not 32.

The processor's integrated Intel AI Boost NPU is rated by Intel at 13 peak TOPS (INT8). That is below the 40 TOPS threshold Microsoft requires for Copilot+ PC features, so this machine is not a Copilot+ PC and will not run the on-device Copilot+ experiences such as Recall or Windows Studio Effects on its NPU. That is not a defect - at this price point the RTX 5080 does the AI work far faster than any NPU would - but if a Copilot+ badge is a procurement requirement, this is not the machine.

Three fans, a vapour chamber and a dedicated SSD heatsink

ASUS specifies three 102 × 102 × 17 mm fans, a vapour chamber covering 72% of the thermal area, and a separate heatsink for the SSD which ASUS measures at 59°C - an 18.5% reduction against the same drive without it. ASUS publishes sustained-load acoustics below 38 dB(A). The chassis is validated to MIL-STD-810H. In a small-form-factor machine pushing a 160W-capable CPU and a full RTX 5080 Laptop GPU, the cooling is not a bullet point - it is the reason the clocks hold.

Plan for the 380W adapter

The RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti configurations ship with a 380W (20VDC, 19A) external power adapter. It is a large brick, and it matters for three practical reasons: desk or rack space behind the unit, the load you are adding to a shared circuit or UPS, and the fact that it uses the ASUS rectangular DC jack rather than USB-C. Factor it in before you commit to a mount or an enclosure. (The 280W adapter listed by ASUS belongs to the RTX 5060 configurations, not this one.)

Five displays, up to 8K

Two HDMI 2.1 FRL, two DisplayPort 2.1 and one Thunderbolt 4 Type-C with DisplayPort 2.1 give up to five 4K displays from a single box. DisplayPort 2.1 at UHBR20 carries 8K@60Hz on two of those outputs; HDMI 2.1 handles 4K@120Hz or 8K@60Hz. For a trading desk, a control room, a design workstation or a multi-screen simulator rig, this is an unusually generous output count for the footprint.

Tool-less upgrades on both memory and storage

Two DIMM slots and two M.2 2280 slots, both reachable without tools. The second M.2 slot is empty as shipped and takes a PCIe Gen4 or Gen5 drive, so capacity can be added later without disturbing the Windows install. Memory ships as 2 × 16GB DDR5-6400 CSO-DIMM - see the Sourcing Notes below regarding the maximum, on which ASUS's own pages disagree.

Software: Armoury Crate and the ROG toolset

Armoury Crate handles hardware monitoring, fan and power profiles, driver updates and game library integration. GlideX3 mirrors and extends screens across devices, Power Sync manages linked power state over HDMI CEC, and Aura Sync drives the lighting. In a business deployment, Armoury Crate's cooling and power profiles are the practical lever for trading acoustics against sustained clocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a Copilot+ PC?
No. The Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus NPU is rated by Intel at 13 peak TOPS, and Microsoft requires 40 TOPS for Copilot+ features. If your organisation has standardised on Copilot+ hardware, this machine will not satisfy that requirement - the AI performance here comes from the RTX 5080, which is a different and, for most real AI workloads, far faster answer.

Why does a mini PC need a 380W power brick?
Because the RTX 5080 Laptop GPU and a CPU capable of 160 W turbo power are both drawing at once under load. The adapter is external and physically large. Check that you have room for it behind the unit and headroom on the circuit or UPS before you commit to a mounting position.

Can I add a second SSD?
Yes. There are two M.2 2280 slots and only one is populated. The free slot accepts a PCIe Gen4 or Gen5 NVMe drive from 1 TB to 4 TB, and ASUS designed the access to be tool-less. Ask SourceIT to supply and fit the drive before delivery if you would prefer not to open the chassis.

How many monitors can it actually drive?
Up to five 4K displays across two HDMI 2.1 FRL, two DisplayPort 2.1 and the Thunderbolt 4 Type-C port. Two of the DisplayPort 2.1 outputs will carry 8K@60Hz at UHBR20.

Does it have 24 or 32 threads?
24. There are 24 physical cores - 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores - and this generation's P-cores do not use Hyper-Threading, so the thread count matches the core count. Size per-thread licensing accordingly.

Can I mount it behind a monitor?
ASUS supplies a removable stand for vertical or horizontal placement. A VESA mount plate is not in the box; ask SourceIT about the ASUS NUC VESA mounting accessory for this chassis. Note the 3.2 kg system weight when checking your monitor arm's load rating.

What is the difference between this and the White model?
Chassis colour only. This SKU is Obsidian Black; the Moonlight White version carries a different part number. Both are stocked - ask us if you need the white finish.

Will it fit in a rack or an AV cabinet?
The chassis is 56.5 mm thick and 282.5 mm wide, so it lies flat comfortably on a shelf. Remember to leave clear airflow paths for three fans and space for the 380 W adapter, which does not mount to the chassis.

Sourcing Notes & Points to Verify

SourceIT builds listings from independent sources - the distributor build sheet, the system vendor and the silicon vendor - and prints the disagreements rather than smoothing them over.

Maximum memory: 64 GB or 128 GB? ASUS's specification table reads "Max Capacity: 64GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM x 2 or 64GB DDR5-6400 CSO-DIMM x 2", which can be read as 64 GB total or as 64 GB per module (128 GB total). ASUS's own ROG NUC 16 product page states "dual-channel DDR5-6400 CSODIMM memory up to 128GB". Intel's silicon ceiling for this processor is 256 GB, so the constraint is ASUS's, not Intel's. If you are buying this to run large local models and the memory ceiling is decisive, ask SourceIT to confirm with ASUS before you order.
Processor name ASUS's global specification page lists the CPU as "Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor 290HX"; the same page in other regions lists "Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus". Intel's own ARK carries the part as Core Ultra 9 processor 290HX Plus (SKU 245960, launched Q1'26). We have used Intel's name
Power figures ASUS quotes cTDP 45-75 W for the processor in this chassis; Intel quotes 55 W base power and 160 W maximum turbo power for the same part. These describe different things - ASUS's is the sustained configuration window, Intel's is the silicon's ceiling. Both are printed above
Dimensions and weight Corrected against ASUS's current specification page to 282.5 × 189.5 × 56.5 mm and 3.2 kg. An earlier revision of this listing carried 282.4 mm and 3.12 kg
Regional SKU suffix ASUS's global pages list this configuration under suffixes such as ...289AU and ...285A2. The unit SourceIT supplies is the Singapore-channel RNUC16JNK9X289A3, ASUS part number 90AS00S1-M00320. Specification is equivalent; warranty is the local 3-year onsite term
Bundled software offers ASUS has promoted a Game Pass bundle with some ROG NUC configurations. Bundle eligibility varies by region and period and is not guaranteed with this SKU - confirm with SourceIT at time of order rather than assuming it is included
