ASUS ProArt vs Apple Studio Display: Does Apple Really Deserve the Premium?

For Mac users who value 5K sharpness, a built-in camera and seamless macOS integration, Apple's premium buys real things. For colour-critical work on a budget, or anyone using Windows, an ASUS ProArt usually gives more for less. Apple refreshed the Apple Studio Display in March 2026: it remains a 27-inch 5K, 600-nit, 60Hz display without HDR, now with Thunderbolt 5, at S$2,199 on Apple's Singapore store, or S$2,599 with nano-texture glass. The ASUS ProArt PA279CRV is a 27-inch 4K monitor with near-full DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB coverage, factory calibration and 96W USB-C, at S$779 at SourceIT (listed 30 Oct 2026). The difference comes down to pixel density, camera and ecosystem on one side, and gamut breadth, ports and price on the other. SourceIT does not sell Apple displays.

What does Apple's premium buy?

  • Sharpness macOS is designed for. At 218 pixels per inch, macOS renders text at a crisp 2x scale. A 27-inch 4K screen at about 163 ppi needs scaling that some Mac users find softer.
  • A camera built in. The 12MP Center Stage camera and Desk View suit video calls without extra hardware.
  • Integration. Brightness, True Tone and reference modes are set from macOS.
  • Build and brightness. 600 nits is brighter than most 27-inch office and creator monitors.

Macworld's review of the 2026 model (19 Mar 2026) called its colour accuracy "excellent" but noted "no HDR, no adaptive refresh rate, no high refresh rate", with a fixed 60Hz and slow pixel response.

Where does the ProArt lead?

  • Adobe RGB. Display Ninja measured the PA279CRV at 97.8% Adobe RGB. Apple specifies P3, so for print-focused photographers the ProArt covers a colour space Apple does not advertise.
  • Verified accuracy. Display Ninja found the PA279CRV's Adobe RGB and P3 presets averaged ΔE 0.58 out of the box.
  • Ports and flexibility. DisplayPort and HDMI inputs work with Windows PCs, cameras and second machines; the Studio Display is designed around Thunderbolt Macs.
  • Price. The S$1,420 difference buys a colorimeter, a second monitor or a large share of a GPU upgrade.
  • Hardware calibration. ASUS ProArt Calibration stores profiles in the monitor itself.
Apple charges for pixel density, a camera and polish. ASUS charges for colour coverage and connectivity. Decide which you will use every day.

What about the Studio Display XDR?

Apple also launched the Studio Display XDR in 2026, with a Mini-LED backlight of 2,304 zones, 1,000 nits SDR, 2,000 nits peak HDR and 120Hz. Engadget measured it at about ΔE 0.8 with minimal blooming. Its Singapore price was reported by NXTMAG at S$4,499; we could not confirm that on Apple's own store page. It competes with Mini-LED reference monitors rather than the PA279CRV; see ASUS ProArt PA32UCXR: Why Would Anyone Spend So Much on a Monitor?

Which should you buy?

  • Apple Studio Display if you work on a Mac, value 5K text clarity and want a built-in camera, and P3 covers your output.
  • ASUS ProArt PA279CRV if you print, need Adobe RGB, use Windows or several computers, or want verified accuracy at a third of the price.
  • Either works for web and social content, as long as you edit in the correct colour mode. See Why Your Photos Look Different on Every Screen.

Mac users wanting 5K from a non-Apple brand can also consider 5K designer monitors such as the BenQ PD2730S.
