Windows on Arm Compatibility 2026: ASUS Ascent QN10 Guide
Posted by Wei Fei on
Windows on Arm compatibility in 2026 is a far shorter list of exceptions than it was at the Snapdragon X launch, but it is still a list, and anyone deploying the ASUS Ascent QN10 (Snapdragon X2 Elite, Windows 11 Pro, 80 TOPS NPU) across a Singapore office should read it before ordering twenty units. This guide covers native Arm64 apps versus Prism emulation, which business software runs natively today, what to check in your own environment (drivers, VPN clients, peripherals, kernel-mode software), using the NPU through Qualcomm AI Hub and Windows ML, Intune and Pluton-based fleet management, and when the x86 NUC 16 Pro is the safer choice.

Native Arm64 versus Prism emulation
Windows 11 on Arm runs two kinds of software. Native Arm64 apps run directly on the Snapdragon X2 Elite's 18 Oryon cores with full performance and battery efficiency. Everything else, the enormous back catalogue of x86 and x64 Windows software, runs through Prism, the emulator Microsoft introduced with Windows 11 24H2 and tuned specifically for Snapdragon processors. Prism translates blocks of x86 instructions into Arm64 just in time, caches the translations so later launches are faster, and, per Microsoft, needs no extra components and is transparent to the app; a 2025 update added AVX and AVX2 support, removing the most common start-up failure of the first generation. The one hard limit in Microsoft's documentation: "emulation only supports user mode code and doesn't support drivers. Any kernel mode components must be compiled as Arm64." That single sentence explains almost every remaining incompatibility.
How much runs natively now? Microsoft's September 2025 developer blog puts native Arm versions at apps representing 90 per cent of total user minutes, and by August 2026 its Works on Windows on Arm catalogue listed more than 7,000 verified apps and games. For an office machine the practical experience is that daily software is native and the occasional line-of-business tool is emulated and works.
What runs well on the Ascent QN10
Productivity: Microsoft 365, Teams, Outlook and OneNote are native, as are Slack, Dropbox and Google Drive. Browsers: Google Chrome ships a native Arm64 build. Creative: Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom and Adobe Express are native, and from version 26.0 so are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition and Media Encoder, with Adobe noting that some features are unavailable and Intel-compiled third-party plug-ins do not load; version 25.x runs under emulation. Affinity, Inkscape, MATLAB, Bluebeam Revu and Safe Exam Browser are among the 2026 native additions. Developer tools: Microsoft documents Arm64 support for native C/C++ Win32, .NET Framework, modern .NET and MAUI, Java, Python and Node.js, and LM Studio ships an Arm build for Snapdragon X-class systems. Communication and security: the major VPN clients and endpoint-protection agents listed in the table are native, which matters because security agents are kernel-mode software and cannot be emulated.
What to check before you deploy
Drivers. Microsoft's FAQ is direct: "Drivers for hardware, games, and apps only work if they're designed for a Windows 11 Arm-based PC." Check label printers, signature pads, smart-card readers, scanners, USB serial adapters and any dongle-licensed software against the vendor's Arm64 driver list before you buy. Peripherals that rely on Windows' built-in class drivers (keyboards, mice, webcams, mass storage, most USB audio) work without any vendor driver. Printers. Mopria-certified printers work, and HP and Xerox supply Printer Support Apps; ASUS's own guidance is to install the manufacturer's Arm-specific driver and to assume an x86-only driver will not work properly. Kernel-mode software. Third-party antivirus, disk-encryption agents, virtual network adapters and older VPN clients install drivers; without an Arm64 build they will not install, and Windows Security covers the gap only for antivirus. Apps that customise Windows. Microsoft flags some input method editors, assistive technologies and cloud-storage sync clients; test your Chinese, Malay or Tamil IME and any accessibility tools. Games using anti-cheat drivers without Arm support fail. Small print. Windows Fax and Scan is not available, and ASUS notes that USB tethering from a phone hotspot is not supported on Snapdragon devices; use Wi-Fi hotspot sharing. Run a two-week pilot on one QN10 with your real software image before the fleet order; it finds the one exception every organisation has.
Using the 80 TOPS NPU: Qualcomm AI Hub and Windows ML
The QN10's Hexagon NPU is rated at 80 TOPS INT8, double the 40 TOPS Copilot+ PC threshold, and there are two documented ways to use it. For end users, Copilot+ features in Windows 11 run on it automatically. For developers, Qualcomm AI Hub provides more than 175 models pre-optimised for Snapdragon, and Windows ML, which reached general availability on Snapdragon NPUs in September 2025 according to Qualcomm, lets an application ship an ONNX model and have Windows dispatch it to the NPU through Qualcomm's execution provider, with conversion and optimisation flows in the AI Toolkit for Visual Studio Code. That is the path for vision models in a kiosk, transcription in a meeting room, or a small language model inside a line-of-business app. General-purpose chat tools such as LM Studio run on the CPU and GPU rather than the NPU, which is fine for 7B to 14B-class models in the QN10's 32 GB but is not what the 80 TOPS figure is for. Our QN10 vs GX10 comparison explains why 80 NPU TOPS and 1,000 GPU TOPS are not comparable numbers.
Fleet management: Intune, Autopilot and Pluton
The QN10 is a Windows 11 Pro device with fTPM 2.0, Microsoft Pluton in the Qualcomm secure processing unit and Snapdragon Guardian, so it enrols and is managed like any other Windows PC. Microsoft lists Intune among the endpoint-management tools available on Arm, and a January 2026 Principled Technologies study (commissioned by Qualcomm) deployed Snapdragon and Intel PCs side by side with Windows Autopilot plus Intune and with Configuration Manager task sequences and found the same five steps and no process differences, the only Arm-specific item being an Arm task sequence in Configuration Manager. Maintain an Arm64 application image alongside your x64 image, because Arm64 installers are often separate downloads, and pin the native builds of Teams, Chrome and your security agent in Intune so emulated copies do not creep in.
When to choose the NUC 16 Pro (x86) instead
Choose the NUC 16 Pro on Intel Core Ultra Series 3 when any of these apply: a required application or driver has no Arm64 build and the vendor has no date; the machine must run kernel-mode software such as a specialised VPN, data-loss-prevention or virtualisation agent only shipped for x64; you depend on legacy USB or serial peripherals with x86-only drivers; you want user-upgradeable memory (the 356H takes two DDR5 SODIMMs up to 128 GB, the QN10's LPDDR5X is soldered at 16 or 32 GB); you need dual 2.5 GbE or Thunderbolt 4 docks already in the building; or your local-LLM plans involve Intel Arc graphics and Vulkan (the X9 388H with 64 GB is the one to pick for that; our guide to running Ollama on the NUC 16 Pro covers what to expect). Choose the QN10 when the software list is native, when always-on low-power NPU inference or Copilot+ is the point, when you want three USB4 ports and Wi-Fi 7 in 0.7 litres, or when the budget is S$2,375 per seat. Both are ASUS Agent Computers; the ASUS Agent Computer guide places them in the full range.

Frequently asked questions
Does Microsoft 365 run natively on the Ascent QN10? Yes. Microsoft 365, Teams, Outlook and OneNote all have native Arm64 builds, as do Chrome, Slack and the major cloud-storage clients.
Will my old x86 Windows application work? Almost always, through Prism emulation, unmodified. The exceptions are applications that install kernel-mode drivers, which must be Arm64.
Do Adobe apps work on Windows on Arm? Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom and Express are native; Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition and Media Encoder are native from version 26.0, with some features unavailable and Intel-compiled plug-ins incompatible.
Will my VPN and antivirus install? The major vendors (Cisco AnyConnect, OpenVPN, Global Secure Access, Defender, CrowdStrike, Sophos, SentinelOne and others) ship Arm64 builds. A product without an Arm64 build will not install because these are kernel-mode agents.
Can the QN10 be managed with Intune and Autopilot? Yes. It is a Windows 11 Pro device with Pluton and TPM 2.0; independent testing in January 2026 found the Autopilot and Configuration Manager process identical to Intel PCs.
How do I use the 80 TOPS NPU? Copilot+ features use it automatically. Developers target it with Qualcomm AI Hub models and Windows ML or ONNX Runtime; general chat tools like LM Studio run on CPU and GPU instead.
When should I buy a NUC 16 Pro instead? When a required driver, kernel-mode agent or legacy peripheral has no Arm64 support, when you need upgradeable memory up to 128 GB, or when your local-LLM plans rely on Intel Arc graphics.
