OLED Burn-In Is Still Scaring Buyers. Has MSI Finally Found the Answer?
MSI has not eliminated OLED burn-in, and no manufacturer has. What it has done is combine panel-care software, better panels and a warranty that MSI says covers burn-in for three years, which changes the buying decision from "will it burn in?" to "is the remaining risk covered?". Independent long-term tests support that view. RTINGS' accelerated test, which ran a news channel at maximum brightness to simulate about ten years, showed obvious burn-in on every OLED monitor tested after 24 months. Monitors Unboxed's real-world test of an MSI QD-OLED used for static desktop work found burn-in after two years and more than 6,000 hours that was "real, it's noticeable, but it's not catastrophic". MSI's current QD-OLEDs at SourceIT include the MAG 341CQP QD-OLED X24 at S$1,309.20 and the MEG X at S$2,151.60 (listed 30 Oct 2026).
What do long-term tests actually show?
| Test | Conditions | Result | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTINGS accelerated monitor test | 24/7 news feed at maximum brightness, simulating about 10 years | All three OLED monitors showed obvious burn-in after 24 months; all still worked and kept their brightness | Tom's Hardware report, updated Sep 2025 |
| Monitors Unboxed, MSI MPG 321URX QD-OLED, 15 months | About 60 hours a week of static desktop use, 3,400–3,800 hours | Burn-in "quite minor" | PC Gamer, Jun 2025 |
| Monitors Unboxed, same monitor, 24 months | Over 6,000 hours | Taskbar and centre-line burn-in; full-screen brightness 243 to 238 nits | PC Gamer, Mar 2026 |
| RTINGS generational comparison | About 10,000 hours at maximum SDR brightness | All units showed image retention; newer panels similar in resistance but brighter | KitGuru report, Aug 2026 |
We report these tests; we have not run them. Accelerated tests are deliberately harsher than typical use.
What causes burn-in?
Each OLED subpixel produces its own light and wears a little as it does. Areas that show the same bright image for long periods, such as a taskbar, a game HUD, a channel logo or window borders, wear faster than the rest, and the difference eventually becomes visible. Heat accelerates it. Monitors Unboxed found green subpixels wore most in its test. The pattern of your use matters more than the hours: varied games and video are kind to an OLED; a static spreadsheet with a bright taskbar for ten hours a day is not.
What does MSI do to reduce it?
- Pixel Shift: moves the image slightly over time so static edges do not sit on the same pixels.
- Static Screen, Taskbar, Multi-Logo and Boundary Detection: dim areas that stay unchanged.
- Panel Protect: a pixel refresh cycle after four hours of use; MSI's "No Interruptions" option extends the mandatory refresh to 24 hours with a reminder 30 minutes before.
- Graphene-film heatsink: to keep the panel cooler.
- AI Care Sensor (MEG X): a presence sensor that checks for a user every 0.2 seconds; MSI says it helps extend the refresh interval from 16 to 24 hours and that detection is processed locally with no data stored.

The software reduces the risk. The warranty transfers it. Neither makes an OLED behave like an LCD.
What does the burn-in warranty cover?
MSI's US announcement says it "guarantees a 3-year warranty on OLED panels" that "includes protection against the burn-in issue", and the X24 page promises a "3-Year Burn-In Warranty". The US post defers regional terms and exclusions to MSI's general warranty page, and we have not been able to confirm the Singapore terms. Ask us before ordering. ASUS and most other OLED makers offer similar three-year cover on newer models, according to TFTCentral; some older OLED models carried shorter terms.
How do you look after an OLED?
- Leave the panel-care features on, and let the refresh cycle run when prompted.
- Use dark mode and hide or auto-hide the taskbar if you use the screen for desktop work.
- Avoid running at maximum brightness for static content; RTINGS suggests this too.
- Use a short screen-off timer.
- If most of your day is spreadsheets and email, consider an IPS monitor for work and OLED for play.
Other OLED trade-offs, such as reflections and text clarity, are covered in The Problem With OLED Gaming Monitors Nobody Wants to Talk About, and the alternative in AOC Gaming Monitor vs MSI QD-OLED.
Has MSI found the answer?
For gamers with varied use, the combination of newer panels, care features and three-year cover makes burn-in a manageable risk rather than a reason to avoid OLED. For people who keep a static desktop on screen all day, the risk remains real, and an IPS or Mini-LED monitor is still the safer tool. That is not MSI-specific; it applies to every OLED on the market.

Frequently asked questions
Do OLED monitors still get burn-in? Yes. Long-term tests by RTINGS and Monitors Unboxed found burn-in on every OLED tested, though modern panels and care features reduce it and real-world results were "not catastrophic".
Does MSI cover OLED burn-in under warranty? MSI advertises a three-year warranty that includes burn-in on its OLED monitors. Confirm the Singapore terms before buying.
What is MSI OLED Care? MSI's set of panel-protection features, including pixel shift, static screen, taskbar and logo detection, scheduled pixel refresh and a graphene heatsink.
Is OLED suitable for office work? It can be, with dark mode and care features on, but long hours of static content raise burn-in risk. IPS or Mini-LED remains safer for all-day desktop use.
How can I reduce OLED burn-in? Keep care features on, allow pixel refresh cycles, avoid maximum brightness for static content, use dark themes and set a short screen-off timer.
